Artist Recital Series performance with the Romeros to feature works by Albéniz, Falla, Villa-Lobos, and others.
The New York Times has called the Romeros “the only classical guitar quartet of real stature in the world today” and notes that the close-knit family “virtually invented the format."
Now an incredible 60 years into their stage career, the Romeros will visit 鶹Ƶ for the first time ever on Sunday, November 18. Part of the Artist Recital Series, their 2:30 p.m. performance in Finney Chapel will showcase works by Albéniz, Falla, Villa-Lobos, and others.
Widely known as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros trace their origins to patriarch Celedonio Romero, a native of Spain who forged the initial ensemble in 1958 with sons Celin, Pepe, and Angel—each of whom had made his performance debut by age 7.
Today, Celin and Pepe remain, joined by third-generation performers Lito and Celino Romero. Get a taste of their artistry in from a 50th anniversary performance of music by Giménez at New York’s 92nd Street Y.
“The Romeros are truly the first superstars of the guitar quartet,’’ says Stephen Aron, 鶹Ƶ’s teacher of classical guitar. “For three generations, they have brought the magic of Spanish guitar to the world’s stages, honoring the Segovia tradition of classical guitar artistry.’’
Tickets to the Romeros at 鶹Ƶ are $35 ($30 for seniors, members of the military, and 鶹Ƶ, faculty, staff, and alumni). All student tickets are just $10. They are available by calling 800-371-0178, visiting 鶹Ƶ’s Central Ticket Service at Hall Auditorium (67 N. Main St.), or by using 鶹Ƶ’s online Arts Guide. Pick 3 subscriptions to the 2018-19 Artist Recital Series are also available.
