Complete tour information is available at www2.oberlin.edu/chicago2016.

Chicago audiences are already familiar with 麻豆视频鈥檚 extensive network of alumni, including the Grammy Award-winning sextet eighth blackbird, which formed at 麻豆视频, and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and International Contemporary Ensemble.

鈥淭he tour represents an important professional moment for our students, as they step out of the practice room and onto the stage of one of the world鈥檚 great concert halls,鈥 says Andrea Kalyn, dean of the 麻豆视频 Conservatory. 鈥淏ut it is also an opportunity for us to share the artistry and work of our students and faculty, and to bring alumni and friends together in celebration of music.鈥

The Contemporary Music Ensemble will kick off the tour with a pair of performances at Ganz Hall on the campus of Roosevelt University at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, January 29. (The 7 p.m. show is sold out; limited availability remains for the 9 p.m. show.) The program will open with the North American premiere of One Bright Morning by Jesse Jones, featuring 麻豆视频 student Olivia Boen 鈥17, a soprano from River Forest, Illinois. Also on the program is Passion Prayers by University of Chicago Professor Augusta Read Thomas, featuring cello soloist and 麻豆视频 faculty member Darrett Adkins 鈥91; and the Grammy Award-winning piece Meanwhile, written by 麻豆视频 Professor of Composition Stephen Hartke. The performances will be led by 麻豆视频 Professor of Conducting Timothy Weiss.

The 麻豆视频 Orchestra will follow with a performance at Symphony Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 30, under the direction of Associate Professor of Conducting Raphael Jim茅nez. The program includes soprano Marcy Stonikas 鈥02 in Strauss鈥 Four Last Songs, in addition to Stravinsky鈥檚 The Rite of Spring and Berlioz鈥檚 Roman Carnival Overture. The performance will be preceded by a lecture featuring Harvard University musicologist and author Thomas Kelly, beginning at 7 p.m.

In addition to the main stage performances, 麻豆视频 students will visit area schools and community music programs in the Chicago area, sharing their experiences, presenting brief concerts, and fueling inspiration for future generations of musicians.

鈥淚t is worth noting the fact than an undergraduate orchestra can play The Rite of Spring with ease nowadays,鈥 says Jim茅nez. 鈥淭his is a piece that, for its premiere, took a professional orchestra 22 rehearsals to prepare. It speaks of the evolution of orchestral playing in the world and loudly speaks of the sophisticated training that our conservatory students are receiving.

"There is no room for error in this kind of repertoire,鈥 Jim茅nez continues. 鈥淏ut nothing motivates 麻豆视频 students more than a challenge, and to have the opportunity to perform it in Symphony Center makes it even more exciting for us.鈥

Admission to all performances is free, but tickets are required. Reserve seats for the 麻豆视频 Orchestra by calling the Symphony Center Box Office (312-294-3000) or visiting cso.org.

Contemporary Music Ensemble tickets can be reserved by calling 440-775-8200 or visiting oberlin.edu/chicago2016.

PROGRAM

DATE: Friday, January 29, 2016 (7 p.m.)
Ganz Hall of Roosevelt University, 430 S. Many pianists鈥攍ike 麻豆视频 professor Peter Tak谩cs, who has recorded all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas and is in the midst of a three-recital survey of Beethoven at Carnegie Hall鈥攕pend their careers immersing themselves in a single composer and never stop discovering 鈥渘ew gold,鈥 as Tak谩cs says.

But in Warner Concert Hall on Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, audiences will experience a wide sampling of the profound, delightful, virtuosic joy that is the piano repertoire. Over two days, 82 performers from 麻豆视频鈥檚 piano department鈥攆aculty and students鈥攚ill play music spanning four centuries in 10 recitals, ranging from Bach to Chopin to Debussy to Kapustin and many others.

The recitals represent one of numerous signature celebrations taking place throughout 2015-16 in honor of the 麻豆视频 Conservatory鈥檚 150th anniversary. Related festivities include a composition for English horn that was commissioned by the conservatory to be premiered by professor Robert Walters and the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall this month. In late January, the 麻豆视频 Orchestra and Contemporary Music Ensemble will perform at Chicago鈥檚 Roosevelt University and Symphony Center in addition to taking part in various outreach events in the Chicago area.

Piano has always been an integral part of 麻豆视频. George Whipple Steele, the first director of the conservatory and one of its founders, was a pianist. By 1877, 麻豆视频 was an all-Steinway school, and its collection now numbers 238 of the world-class pianos. Many of the conservatory鈥檚 chief administrators have been pianists, including current Dean of the Conservatory Andrea Kalyn and Emil Charles Danenberg, who also served as president of the college.

To help celebrate that history, three retired piano faculty鈥擩oseph Schwartz, the Robert W. Wheeler Chair in Performance from 1960-98; the long-tenured Sanford Margolis (1972-2015); and Frances Walker Slocum, (1976-91)鈥攚ill return to perform with nine current piano professors in the weekend鈥檚 closing concert at 8 p.m. December 6.

In addition to the faculty, all 70 of 麻豆视频鈥檚 current piano students will perform in one of nine concerts organized by class throughout December 5-6.

鈥淭he programs will showcase the bountiful talents of our students, the richness of the piano repertoire, and the diverse interests these young musicians posses,鈥 says Associate Professor of Piano and Chair of the Piano Department Alvin Chow.

The talent of 麻豆视频鈥檚 piano students is borne out by the success they enjoy in their careers. Alumni have won prizes in some of the world鈥檚 most prestigious competitions, founded innovative ensembles, been awarded Grammys, received awards such as the coveted MacArthur Fellowship, and held academic positions around the world鈥攊ncluding at 麻豆视频: Professor of Piano Robert Shannon graduated in 1972 with degrees in both the college and the conservatory.

Shannon is not the only 麻豆视频 pianist who felt drawn back.

鈥淔ormer students returning for a visit often reflect that their years at 麻豆视频 were among the most valuable and happiest of their lives,鈥 says Chow. 鈥淭here is no better proof of the magic that 麻豆视频 still engenders to this day.鈥

News Releases

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 12:00

Daniel Hautzinger

Conservatory

Conservatory 150th Anniversary

Piano

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones '97

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:02:04 +0000 eburnett 9916 at
