Complete tour information is available at <a href="https://www2.oberlin.edu/chicago2016/">www2.oberlin.edu/chicago2016</a>.</p> <p>Chicago audiences are already familiar with �鶹��Ƶ’s extensive network of alumni, including the Grammy Award-winning sextet eighth blackbird, which formed at �鶹��Ƶ, and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and International Contemporary Ensemble.</p> <p>“The tour represents an important professional moment for our students, as they step out of the practice room and onto the stage of one of the world’s great concert halls,” says Andrea Kalyn, dean of the �鶹��Ƶ Conservatory. “But it is also an opportunity for us to share the artistry and work of our students and faculty, and to bring alumni and friends together in celebration of music.”</p> <p>The Contemporary Music Ensemble will kick off the tour with a pair of performances at Ganz Hall on the campus of Roosevelt University at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, January 29. (The 7 p.m. show is sold out; limited availability remains for the 9 p.m. show.) The program will open with the North American premiere of <i>One Bright Morning</i> by Jesse Jones, featuring �鶹��Ƶ student Olivia Boen ’17, a soprano from River Forest, Illinois. Also on the program is <i>Passion Prayers</i> by University of Chicago Professor Augusta Read Thomas, featuring cello soloist and �鶹��Ƶ faculty member Darrett Adkins ’91; and the Grammy Award-winning piece <i>Meanwhile</i>, written by �鶹��Ƶ Professor of Composition Stephen Hartke. The performances will be led by �鶹��Ƶ Professor of Conducting Timothy Weiss.</p> <p>The �鶹��Ƶ Orchestra will follow with a performance at Symphony Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 30, under the direction of Associate Professor of Conducting Raphael Jiménez. The program includes soprano Marcy Stonikas ’02 in Strauss’ <i>Four Last Songs</i>, in addition to Stravinsky’s <i>The Rite of Spring</i> and Berlioz’s <i>Roman Carnival</i> Overture. The performance will be preceded by a lecture featuring Harvard University musicologist and author Thomas Kelly, beginning at 7 p.m.</p> <p>In addition to the main stage performances, �鶹��Ƶ students will visit area schools and community music programs in the Chicago area, sharing their experiences, presenting brief concerts, and fueling inspiration for future generations of musicians.</p> <p>“It is worth noting the fact than an undergraduate orchestra can play <i>The Rite of Spring</i> with ease nowadays,” says Jiménez. “This is a piece that, for its premiere, took a professional orchestra 22 rehearsals to prepare. It speaks of the evolution of orchestral playing in the world and loudly speaks of the sophisticated training that our conservatory students are receiving.</p> <p>"There is no room for error in this kind of repertoire,” Jiménez continues. “But nothing motivates �鶹��Ƶ students more than a challenge, and to have the opportunity to perform it in Symphony Center makes it even more exciting for us.”</p> <p>Admission to all performances is free, but tickets are required. Many pianists—like �鶹��Ƶ professor <a href="https://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/faculty/faculty-detail.dot?id=21227">Peter Takács</a>, who has recorded all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas and is in the midst of a <a href="/news/piano-professor-peter-takacs-perform-carnegie-hall">three-recital survey of Beethoven</a> at Carnegie Hall—spend their careers immersing themselves in a single composer and never stop discovering “new gold,” as Takács says.</p> <p>But in Warner Concert Hall on <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/piano_department_celebration150th_anniversary_of_oberlin_conservatory#.VlSDH3tp8WE">Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6</a>, audiences will experience a wide sampling of the profound, delightful, virtuosic joy that is the piano repertoire. Over two days, 82 performers from �鶹��Ƶ’s piano department—faculty and students—will play music spanning four centuries in 10 recitals, ranging from Bach to Chopin to Debussy to Kapustin and many others.</p> <p>The recitals represent one of numerous signature celebrations taking place throughout 2015-16 in honor of the <a href="/news/oberlin-conservatory-celebrates-150-years-series-events">�鶹��Ƶ Conservatory’s 150th anniversary</a>. Related festivities include a composition for English horn that was commissioned by the conservatory to be <a href="http://www.clevelandorchestra.com/1516-concerts/1516-classical/week-06/?performanceNumber=13245">premiered</a> by professor Robert Walters and the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall this month. In late January, the <a href="http://oberlin.edu/chicago2016/">�鶹��Ƶ Orchestra and Contemporary Music Ensemble</a> will perform at Chicago’s Roosevelt University and Symphony Center in addition to taking part in various outreach events in the Chicago area.</p> <p>Piano has always been an integral part of �鶹��Ƶ. George Whipple Steele, the first director of the conservatory and one of its founders, was a pianist. By 1877, �鶹��Ƶ was an all-Steinway school, and its collection now numbers 238 of the world-class pianos. Many of the conservatory’s chief administrators have been pianists, including current Dean of the Conservatory Andrea Kalyn and Emil Charles Danenberg, who also served as president of the college.</p> <p>To help celebrate that history, three retired piano faculty—Joseph Schwartz, the Robert W. Wheeler Chair in Performance from 1960-98; the long-tenured Sanford Margolis (1972-2015); and Frances Walker Slocum, (1976-91)—will return to perform with nine current piano professors in the weekend’s closing concert at 8 p.m. December 6.</p> <p>In addition to the faculty, all 70 of �鶹��Ƶ’s current piano students will perform in one of nine concerts organized by class throughout December 5-6.</p> <p>“The programs will showcase the bountiful talents of our students, the richness of the piano repertoire, and the diverse interests these young musicians posses,” says Associate Professor of Piano and Chair of the Piano Department <a href="https://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/faculty/faculty-detail.dot?id=20643">Alvin Chow</a>.</p> <p>The talent of �鶹��Ƶ’s piano students is borne out by the success they enjoy in their careers.
