The hour-long piece, based on Book IV of Virgil鈥檚 ancient epic poem Aeneid, has evolved into one of the most iconic operas in British history.

Dido and Aeneas will be performed at 麻豆视频鈥檚 Fairchild Chapel (inside Bosworth Hall, 50 W. Lorain St.) at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16. A 3 p.m. matinee will take place Sunday, April 17, at Cleveland's Harkness Chapel (11200 Bellflower Rd.) on the Case campus. Admission to all performances is free.

Written in 1680, the opera recounts the love story between Queen Dido of Carthage and the Trojan warrior Aeneas, who abandons his lover when witches intervene. The production is made possible by Jason Goldberg, a fifth-year student at 麻豆视频 who has produced and directed the opera as his final project toward a rare independent major in opera directing.

"The more I researched the work, the more I wanted to do a historically informed version of this masterpiece because the story鈥檚 themes of love lost, honorable intentions, social pressures, and base desires are all very relevant today,鈥 says Goldberg, who also majors in voice performance. 鈥淚ncorporating Baroque gesture and stylized movement into the production allows the opera to live in its natural setting and highlights its drama and themes."

The production features a cast of 麻豆视频 vocal performance majors as well as dancers from Case Western Reserve University's Baroque Dance Ensemble in numbers choreographed by Case instructor Julie Andrijeski. Nicholas Capozzoli, who is pursuing a master of music in historical performance at 麻豆视频, serves as harpsichordist and music director, leading an ensemble of 麻豆视频 Conservatory student instrumentalists who will perform on Baroque instruments.

To learn more, read ClevelandClassical鈥檚 feature story about the production.

News Releases

Tue, 04/05/2016 - 12:00

Julie Anna Gulenko

Conservatory

Historical Performance

Opera Theater

Historical Performance

Vocal Studies

Jason Goldberg works with cast members at a Dido and Aeneas rehearsal in 麻豆视频. Out of that period came Alcina, an adaptation of a 16th-century epic poem that premiered in 1735 and then all but disappeared for almost 200 years. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the composer's most beautiful works.

麻豆视频 Opera Theater will present Handel鈥檚 otherworldly Alcina for four performances beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 9. Months of preparation go into taking a work from concept to stage, and the effort of countless people is required to present four spectacular performances each semester.

In the case of 麻豆视频 Opera Theater鈥檚 upcoming production of the Benjamin Britten opera The Rape of Lucretia鈥攚hich runs Wednesday through Sunday, November 11-15鈥攖hose preparations extend far beyond the stage.

Thanks to the efforts of faculty and administrators from multiple corners of campus, a series of complementary programs has been organized to help audiences contextualize the content in Lucretia from a variety of perspectives.

The programs follow the success of 麻豆视频 Opera Theater鈥檚 fall 2014 production of Kurt Weill鈥檚 Street Scene; that opera served as the cornerstone of a similar series of related talks and other events dubbed 鈥Weill Week.鈥

The Lucretia activity centers around three main events: a panel discussion that explores the relevance and implications of Lucretia in modern times, another focusing on musicological aspects of Britten鈥檚 opera, and a gallery talk and self-guided tour devoted to art depicting tragic women throughout the ages.

The first program, Violence and Virtue: Framing Lucretia in the 21st Century, focuses on the significance of the production in contemporary America and in what ways it can inspire productive conversations. It features a panel made up of 麻豆视频 faculty members representing an array of disciplines: Carol Lasser (history), who serves as director of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at 麻豆视频; Claire Solomon (Hispanic studies); Wendy Kozol (comparative American studies); and Renee Romano (Africana studies and comparative American studies). It takes place at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 11, in Stull Recital Hall, on the third floor of Bibbins Hall (77 West College St.).

鈥淭he advantage of being a college and conservatory combined is that we have the structures to really have these conversations,鈥 says Meredith Raimondo, 麻豆视频鈥檚 Title IX coordinator and the facilitator of the panel. Raimondo oversees 麻豆视频鈥檚 system for responding to and preventing all forms of gender-based harassment and discrimination. She sees her job as a way of fulfilling 麻豆视频鈥檚 mission to educate鈥攁nd to help remove all barriers to education.

Among the themes Raimondo expects to see emerge in the discussion are the relationship between sexual violence and war, how we look back at myth and history, and how we use creative work as a way to process and move beyond violence as a solution. Lucretia not only holds historical significance, she adds, but it also functions transhistorically. 鈥淕ender-based violence is a longstanding problem,鈥 says Raimondo, 鈥渟o I have a real belief that some of the solutions lie in art.鈥

A second discussion, Reading Britten: The Rape of Lucretia in Context, explores musicological and theoretical perspectives on the work and addresses such issues as why tragic women have played key roles in opera throughout the ages. The panel includes Danielle Ward-Griffin, assistant professor of music history at Christopher Newport University, and three members of 麻豆视频鈥檚 faculty: Lucretia director Jonathon Field and music theorists Andrew Pau and Jan Miyake. Reading Britten takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 11, in Hall Auditorium (67 N. Main St.), immediately preceding the opening-night performance of the opera at 8.

鈥淲e choose stories that are powerful,鈥 says Miyake, the panel鈥檚 moderator, who adds that it is important to preface the performance with a clear sense of why the story is important and what power it has. Lucretia occupies an important and complex space: Tragic female roles are omnipresent throughout the history of opera, after all.

Finally, a gallery talk and self-guided tour called Women in the Ancient World focuses on tragic depictions of women in works throughout history, using examples from the collection of the Allen Memorial Art Museum. Curated by Andaleeb Banta, the series includes the painting 鈥淒eath of Lucretia鈥 (attributed to Domenico Beccafumi, c. 1515) and a pictograph called 鈥淭he Rape of Persephone鈥 (Gottlieb, 1943), among others. The talk will be led by Professor of English Nick Jones and includes Banta and Assistant Professor of Classics Chris Trinacty. It takes place at noon Thursday, November 12, at the Allen Memorial Art Museum (87 N. Main St.).

In addition to the upcoming programs, the two cast members playing Lucretia鈥擱ebecca Printz (Wednesday/Saturday cast) and Micaela Aldridge (Friday/Sunday cast)鈥攔eceived guidance from counselors at the Nord Center鈥檚 Sexual Assault Services, to better understand the psychology of victims like the opera's Lucretia. Nord Center counselors will attend each performance of the opera to serve as a resource to all guests.

News Releases

Thu, 11/05/2015 - 12:00

Faith Roberts

Allen Memorial Art Museum

Conservatory

Music Theory

Opera Theater

Music Theory

Vocal Studies

Off

false

Photo-Illustration by Jacob Gilbert '15

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:02:04 +0000 eburnett 9971 at Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera Springs into 麻豆视频 March 11-15 /news/mozarts-la-finta-giardiniera-springs-oberlin-march-11-15 Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera Springs into 麻豆视频 March 11-15 eburnett Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:03

More than 200 years after his death, the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart鈥The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni among them鈥攔emain timeless in their appeal.

This month, 麻豆视频 Opera Theater explores a lesser-known work by the master, composed when he was only 18 years old: La finta giardiniera ("The pretend garden-girl").

Though it was written at a time when Mozart struggled to find audiences for his operas, La finta giardiniera serves up an early glimpse of the qualities audiences grew to love about his later works: his sophisticated use of the orchestra to enhance the on-stage drama, his deep exploration of emotion, his flair for innovation, and his intuitive understanding of what makes humans think and act the way they do.

Or, as 麻豆视频 Opera Theater Director Jonathon Field puts it: "If you think Lorde writes good music at that age, you should hear this."

Set in the garden of a provincial Italian adjudicator, La finta giardiniera reveals the tangled lives and loves of the residents of an Italian town鈥攅ach of them complete with a hidden past that they desperately hope to shed.

"They soon discover that the best way to reinvent yourself is not by becoming someone else, but by forgiveness and understanding," says Field.
