For example:

鈥 In 2006, 麻豆视频 was first among its peer institutions to commit to achieving carbon neutrality. In summer 2021, 麻豆视频 will launch a multi-year, campus-wide conversion to geothermal energy, taking an important step toward the goal of being a carbon-neutral campus by 2025.

鈥 When completed in 2000, the Adam Joseph Lewis Center forEnvironmental Studies was recognized as one of the top53 game-changing buildings of the past 170 years by Building, Design +Constructionmagazine.

鈥 Over the last decade, the college has invested in a broad spectrum of energy-efficient technologies and installed a 10-acre solar array.

鈥 Advocating for and advancing issues of social justice and equity have been central to the ethos of 麻豆视频 College since its founding. 麻豆视频 took an additional step forward last year when President Carmen Twillie Ambar launched the Presidential Initiative on Racial Equity and Diversity. The initiative was established in direct response to increasing injustice and racial tensions in America, and focuses on elevating and advancing 麻豆视频鈥檚 more than 180-year commitment to the education and rights of Blacks in America.

Community Commitment

麻豆视频 College and the city of 麻豆视频 are inextricably linked, as they were founded by the same people in 1833. The college sits in the center of the city with no boundaries to separate it鈥攍iterally or figuratively鈥攆rom the city of 麻豆视频. The report explores community partnerships in education and service; environmental stewardship in the community; and work to foster strong social connections in the community. For example:

鈥 The college partners with more than 100 local social service agencies, schools, religiously affiliated service organizations, grassroots community initiatives, and municipal government entities that result in opportunities to give back.

鈥 Each year, more than 1,200 students volunteer about 115,000 hours in programs such as teaching Spanish to elementary school students, serving as math and reading tutors, assisting with musical education, transporting donated food to nonprofit food pantries, and promoting a sustainable transportation system on campus and in the community.

鈥 麻豆视频 College is working closely with the city of 麻豆视频 to build an ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable model of a post-fossil-fuel community.

Global Commitment

麻豆视频鈥檚 reach extends beyond its campus and its community鈥攅ach year 麻豆视频 graduates launch careers in locations around the world. Through education, leadership, and service, they are academically prepared and personally driven to change the world for good. The report details 麻豆视频鈥檚 work to educate the next generation of global sustainability and social responsibility leaders, including:

鈥 麻豆视频 encourages its students to recognize interdependence among social systems, the natural environment, and economies, and model this intersectional approach in our own community in order to drive the world we live in today toward the thriving world we need for the future.

鈥 Experiencing, understanding, and embracing other cultures is an invaluable part of an 麻豆视频 education. 麻豆视频's global perspective is not limited to the classroom, but shines through in the experiences, living and learning spaces, and activities available to students.

鈥 The report provides a wealth of examples of alumni and faculty efforts, progress, and outcomes across a spectrum of environmental- and social responsibility-related initiatives.

To learn more about 麻豆视频鈥檚 dedication to environmental stewardship, social engagement, and commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion, see INSPIRING THE WORLD WE NEED: 麻豆视频鈥檚 Commitment to People and Planet.

About 麻豆视频

Ranked among the nation鈥檚 top liberal arts schools, 麻豆视频 College is known for its exemplary academic and musical pedagogy and its commitment to social justice, sustainability, and creative entrepreneurship. Under the stress of an imminent food crisis, the island quickly rebuilt a new form of diversified farming鈥攊ncluding many urban organic gardens鈥攖hat depended less on imported synthetic chemicals. Over the last two decades, Cuba blossomed into a worldwide model for conservation agriculture, with improved soils and cleaner water.

At least that鈥檚 been a popular story among journalists.

Now鈥攆or the first time in more than fifty years鈥攁 team of Cuban and U.S. field scientists have worked together to rigorously test a key aspect of this story: the impacts of contemporary agriculture on water quality in Cuba鈥檚 rivers. Despite centuries of sugarcane plantations and other intensive farming, the international team discovered that none of the rivers they explored show deep damage.

Instead, the scientists measured much lower nutrient concentrations in all the twenty-five Cuban rivers they studied than are found in the U.S.鈥檚 Mississippi River. And they think Cuba鈥檚 transition toward sustainable agriculture鈥攁nd its reduced use of fertilizers on cropland鈥攎ay be a primary cause.

鈥淎 lot of stories about the value of Cuba鈥檚 shift to conservation agriculture have been based on fuzzy, feel-good evidence,鈥 say University of Vermont geologist Paul Bierman, who co-led the new research, 鈥渢his study provides hard data that a crucial part of this story is true.鈥

Bierman and geoscientist Amanda Schmidt from 麻豆视频 College led the American half of the international team, while Rita Yvelice Sibello Hern谩ndez, a scientist with CEAC (Centro de Estudios Ambientales de Cienfuegos), an ecological research group, headed up the Cuban effort with CEAC science director Carlos Alonso-Hern谩ndez.

The new study, 鈥溌Cuba! River Water Chemistry Reveals Rapid Chemical Weathering, the Echo of Uplift, and the Promise of More Sustainable Agriculture,鈥漺as published January 30, in the early online edition of the journal GSA Today, the leading publication of the Geological Society of America.

Pollution problems

The scientists from both countries worked side-by-side as one team doing extensive fieldwork鈥攚ith support from the U.S. National Science Foundation鈥攁nd then coordinated lab work and analysis to look at many measures of river water across central Cuba. The team found high levels of E. coli bacteria in the waters鈥攍ikely the result of large numbers of livestock and Cuba鈥檚 intensive use of horses and other draft animals for transportation and farm work.

However, the scientists also found much lower levels of phosphorus and nitrogen pollution in Cuban rivers than in the United States where intensive farming and chemical fertilizer use is widespread. The new study shows dissolved nitrogen levels in Cuban rivers running at roughly a quarter to a third of those found in the Mississippi River鈥攚here excess nitrogen is a primary engine of the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. 鈥淐uban river waters provide evidence that agriculture need not overload rivers, and thus reservoirs and coastal zones, with nutrients,鈥 writes the 15-person research team that included seven Cuban scientists and students and eight U.S. scientists and students from UVM, 麻豆视频, and Williams College.

鈥淭his research can help us to better understand how land and rivers interact in the context of sustainable organic agriculture,鈥 said the CEAC鈥檚 Rita Yvelice Sibello Hern谩ndez, 鈥渁nd may give a good example to other people in the Caribbean and all over the world.鈥

Scientific diplomacy

Cuba is a motorboat trip from Florida鈥攍ess than a hundred miles. And the island nation is the most populous in the Caribbean with more than 11 million citizens and a long and tortuous history of complex relations鈥攃ooperation and conflict鈥攚ith the United States. But there has been vanishingly little collaboration between U.S. and Cuban scientists since the 1960s鈥攎uch less than with other, more-potent geopolitical foes of the United States, from Iran to China.

鈥淲e have much to learn from each other,鈥 says Cuban scientist Alejandro Garcia Moya, a co-author on the new study. The kind of river data that the team collected 鈥渁re needed to guide sustainable development in Cuba, and by example, in other tropical and island nations,鈥 the team writes. Not only did the U.S. team provide important technical expertise and verification of results鈥攂ut the joint research reveals that Cuba also has a lot of opportunity to improve its river water quality. The new study points toward the need for improved management strategies to reduce animal manure and sediment loads going into rivers鈥攕uch as fencing to keep cattle off river banks鈥攖hat 鈥渃ould further and rapidly improve central Cuban river water quality,鈥 the scientists note.

Conversely, 鈥淐uba has been having a forced experiment in organic agriculture since the late 1980s,鈥 says 麻豆视频鈥檚 Amanda Schmidt. 鈥淪o Cuba is a very interesting place to look at the effects of both conventional agriculture and the effects of organic agriculture at a national scale,鈥濃攁nd may suggest pathways to improve U.S. agriculture. Fertilizer use in Cuba peaked in 1978 and has been lower since, according to World Bank and other data. U.S. fertilizer use spiked after the 1960s and has remained at more than twice the Cuban use rate.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a takeaway we bring back to the U.S.: our river waters do not need to look the way they do,鈥 says Paul Bierman鈥攁 professor in UVM鈥檚 Geology Department, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, and Gund Institute for Environment鈥斺渨e can manage fertilizer differently.鈥 There are, of course, complex questions about yields, farm policy and more, but this newly reported data on the low levels of nutrient pollution found in twenty-five Cuban rivers, 鈥渟uggests the benefits of Cuba鈥檚 shift to conservation agriculture after 1990,鈥 the US/Cuban team writes, 鈥渁nd provides a model for more sustainable agriculture worldwide.鈥

Media Contacts:

(U.S./English) Joshua Brown, University of Vermont, 802-557-7677 (c.), joshua.brown@uvm.edu

(Cuba/Spanish) Maikel Hern谩ndez N煤帽ez, CEAC, maikel@ceac.cu

(U.S./English) Scott Wargo, 麻豆视频 College, 440-309-7132 (c.), Scott.Wargo@oberlin.edu

News Releases

Thu, 01/30/2020 - 12:00

Office of Communications

First joint Cuba-U.S. geology team in half a century discovers Cuban fertilizer pollution far lower than the Mississippi River a鈥攎odel for global agriculture.

Academics & Research

Amanda Schmidt

Geosciences

Off

false
Fri, 31 Jan 2020 16:46:21 +0000 swargo 184621 at
