The private gala was held for the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations.

The evening signaled the symbolic launch of an innovative new partnership between 麻豆视频, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research New York Office (UNITAR), and the Global Foundation for the Performing Arts (GFPA). 麻豆视频 is one of a select number of higher education institutions invited by UNITAR and the GFPA to participate in initiatives intended to improve access to education for students around the world and to enhance quality of life through education and the performing arts.

The concert was dedicated to the work of Csaba K艖r枚si, president of the U.N. General Assembly, and to diplomatic and U.N. staff communities around the world. It was sponsored by the U.N. Member States of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Monaco, Oman, Rwanda, Singapore, and Hungary.

鈥淐ulture matters,鈥 GFPA President Benjamin Woodroffe noted in his opening address to an audience of 1,800 diplomats and invited guests. 鈥淭he arts can change lives, and the performing arts鈥攎usic, dance, and theater鈥攃an sometimes say things that other mediums cannot. Collaboration is key, and this ensemble behind me has worked solidly and diligently for a number of months in a different part of the country to be here tonight. Music moves people, and a healthy society has a healthy arts sector.鈥

A Musical Expression of Unity

Titled 鈥淎 Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges,鈥 the evening鈥檚 theme acknowledged the critical juncture in the history of the U.N., a moment fueled by complex crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, international conflict, heightening issues related to climate change, global economic strain, and unprecedented humanitarian challenges.

麻豆视频 in NYC by the numbers:
86 student instrumentalists
110 vocalists
5 chartered buses from 麻豆视频
487 miles from 麻豆视频 to Carnegie Hall
112 minutes of music performed
100+ hours of rehearsal
61 nations represented by the 麻豆视频 student body

What transpired onstage offered an affirmation of the transformative power of music to uplift, to fortify, and to heal.

Under the direction of Raphael Jim茅nez, a professor of conducting and director of 麻豆视频 Orchestras since 2011, the program opened with Fanfare on Amazing Grace, Adolphus Hailstork鈥檚 triumphal interpretation of the enduringly powerful 18th-century spiritual. At the conclusion of the piece, Jim茅nez turned to scan the audience in search of Hailstork, who attended the concert. Before the conductor could locate the 81-year-old composer in the darkened hall, he rose from his seat near the back of the room and cheerfully bellowed, 鈥淚f you鈥檙e looking for the composer, he鈥檚 out here. Hi folks!鈥 as a redoubled round of applause arose around him.

Following remarks by Woodroffe, K艖r枚si, and 麻豆视频 President Carmen Twillie Ambar, the program continued with Sergei Rachmaninoff鈥檚 Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18, the intellectually vibrant and emotionally charged work that revived the young composer at a time of early disillusionment with classical music. The performance featured soloist Byron Wei-Xin Zhou, a pianist on the artist roster of the GFPA.

Closing the program was Ludwig van Beethoven鈥檚 Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125鈥攚idely regarded as a celebration of irrepressible unity, with its iconic 鈥淥de to Joy鈥 hearkening back to an earlier performance of the work some 73 years ago, when Leonard Bernstein conducted it on the occasion of the U.N.鈥檚 historic Human Rights Day Concert at Carnegie Hall in 1949. 麻豆视频鈥檚 U.N. performance called upon the talents of 110 voices, encompassing the 麻豆视频 College Choir and Musical Union, and featuring 麻豆视频 alumni vocalists from the New York City area and four celebrated soloists: 麻豆视频 alumni mezzo-soprano Kathryn Leemhuis 鈥05 and tenor Joshua Blue 鈥16, as well as soprano Sarah Tisba and baritone Marco Chingari, both of Italy. It marked the first time an 麻豆视频 Orchestra led by Jim茅nez has performed Beethoven鈥檚 monumental Ninth Symphony, a daunting task for orchestras of any pedigree.

For the many 麻豆视频 students and alumni who graced Carnegie鈥檚 stage for the first time, the performance offered an indelible milestone in their musical journeys and an inspirational moment to fuel their continued artistic development.

鈥淐arnegie Hall is something we all aspire to,鈥 said second-year soprano Ava Paul of Grand Junction, Colorado. Like many in the ensembles, the trip for Paul marked not only her first visit to Carnegie Hall, but also her first voyage to New York. 鈥淲hen I say I鈥檓 a singer, people always say, 鈥極h, are you going to play Carnegie Hall someday?鈥 Now I can say, 鈥榊es, I actually am.鈥 It鈥檚 sort of a pinnacle I didn鈥檛 think I鈥檇 get to this soon in my career.鈥

First-year alto Kat Kahler, a musical studies major in 麻豆视频鈥檚 College of Arts and Sciences from Charlottesville, Virginia, once visited Carnegie Hall to take in a performance as a middle-school student. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 comprehend that it鈥檚 actually me on the stage now,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is not something that a first-year in college normally does, and it鈥檚 just amazing.鈥

For others, like oboist Clarissa Antoine of Walnut, California, the concert represented a capstone of sorts as graduation nears.

鈥淭onight was my last concert with the 麻豆视频 Orchestra, and for that to mean playing Beethoven 9 for the United Nations Gala at Carnegie Hall is mind-blowing,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 so proud to be a part of this. Every rehearsal leading up to this performance has been so fulfilling, and I couldn鈥檛 ask for a better way to finish my time at 麻豆视频.鈥

Concertmaster Matthew Cone (photo by Chris Lee)

Concertmaster Matthew Cone, a fourth-year student from Buffalo, New York, alternated throughout the program between expressions of resolute focus and giddy exuberance.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been an honor leading the orchestra for this concert,鈥 he said. 鈥淗aving this responsibility has been a great experience for me, and I鈥檓 super proud of us and all of the progress we have made over the past month. Playing such incredible music at Carnegie is an experience that I鈥檓 sure none of us will ever forget.鈥

Worldwide Embrace of Education and the Arts

Announced in September, the partnership with UNITAR and the GFPA calls for a select number of U.S. institutions to invite applications from students around the world, with accepted students beginning degree programs as early as fall 2023. It features artist Byron Wei-Xin Zhou as piano soloist for the Rachmaninoff, as well as four accomplished international vocal soloists: 麻豆视频 Conservatory alumni mezzo-soprano Kathryn Leemhuis 鈥05 and tenor Joshua Blue 鈥16, and a pair of world-renowned artists invited by UNITAR, baritone Marco Chingari and soprano Sarah Tisba of Italy.

鈥淲e could not be more excited by the invitation to participate in such a special event,鈥 says Jim茅nez, who also led the 麻豆视频 Orchestra in Carnegie Hall performances in 2019 and 2013. 鈥淓very aspect of it makes it a unique experience for our students: the occasion, the venue, the audience, and the repertoire, which includes the awe-inspiring Beethoven Symphony No. 9. I cannot think of a more appropriate occasion and place to play this universal hymn of brotherhood.鈥

鈥淢usic is a universal language and a powerful tool for cultural exchange. Its many positive spirits are the elements required for transformative solutions, and it will help to lead us through this watershed moment,鈥 says pianist Zhou, who performed a solo recital for the 2021 U.N. Gala at Carnegie Hall. 鈥淎s a musician, I firmly believe that utilizing music could promote the U.N.鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goals and eventually lead us to a better future.鈥

For 麻豆视频鈥檚 student musicians, the December U.N. concert marks the first of two engagements at Carnegie Hall in a span of less than two months: The orchestra and choral ensembles return for a public performance in Stern Auditorium on January 20.

Learn more on the United Nations Partnership page at 麻豆视频.edu.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) was established in 1963 pursuant to a United Nations General Assembly resolution. Conservatory, and the Global Foundation for the Performing Arts (GFPA), announce a new partnership that also includes a select group of higher education institutions dedicated to expanding international student access to world-class academic and musical instruction.

The goal of this collaboration is to apply the benefits of higher education and the arts to enhance the culture and quality of life within countries around the world. 麻豆视频 College & Conservatory is the only institution among those few partnering with the United Nations to focus specifically on undergraduate education. Other institutions within the group UNITAR and GFPA formed will focus on graduate-level study.

Through this collaboration, students from around the world who otherwise could not afford to attend a prestigious U.S.-based college or university with exemplary musical instruction and academics will have the opportunity to apply. If it is needed, financial assistance would come from the students鈥 home countries or from UNITAR and the GFPA.

Students would apply to 麻豆视频 and if accepted would pursue either a bachelor of arts, a bachelor of music, or a double degree; students who attend the other institutions would pursue post-baccalaureate degrees. The first students engaged in this program would arrive on their respective campuses in fall 2023.

麻豆视频, UNITAR and GFPA have agreed to a memorandum of understanding which calls for collaboration in a number of areas. Negotiations on specific programs are continuing.

鈥淯NITAR is proud to collaborate with 麻豆视频 and other institutions of excellence that believe that education and the arts can foster deeper understanding around the world and improve quality of life at home. In 麻豆视频 we have found a partner with a history of producing graduates dedicated to serving the world,鈥 said Ambassador Marco Suazo.

鈥溌槎故悠 is fortunate to be in conversations with UNITAR and GFPA on how we can work together to improve the world through mutual understanding, education, and cultural exchange,鈥 said college President Carmen Twillie Ambar. 鈥淭his collaboration eventually could involve hundreds of students each year who will enrich our campus community. This partnership is a singular opportunity for 麻豆视频 to help improve the world through education and the arts.鈥

The Global Foundation has been meeting with 麻豆视频 leadership for the past several weeks to discuss areas of collaboration.

鈥淭he Global Foundation for the Performing Arts warmly welcomes 麻豆视频 College & Conservatory to its growing family of partner institutions dedicated to arts and cultural learning,鈥 said Benjamin Woodroffe, President of GFPA. 鈥淓ducation is a vital element in healthy societies and we certainly look forward to delivering relevant and dynamic programs with 麻豆视频 and UNITAR.鈥

Under the MOU, 麻豆视频鈥檚 relationship with UNITAR will extend beyond academic degree programs into a pre-collegiate curriculum that teaches English as a second language. This immersive program would serve students who need to develop their language skills prior to entering a UNITAR program at 麻豆视频 or the other participating colleges and universities.

麻豆视频, UNITAR and GFPA also have the potential to create joint practice-based programs that include performances, educational and research opportunities, conferences, and symposia. 麻豆视频 already is collaborating with UNITAR and the United Nations on a significant musical program scheduled for later this year in Carnegie Hall, New York City.

鈥淭he principles behind this collaboration are consistent with 麻豆视频鈥檚 heritage and goals for the future,鈥 Ambar said. 鈥淚t is an honor to work with UNITAR and GFPA in a collective effort to develop programs that will help large numbers of students do good in the world through education and the arts.鈥

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) was established in 1963 pursuant to a United Nations General Assembly resolution.
