Given all this, sport is also the perfect way to explore social, cultural, and political phenomena from an interdisciplinary perspective.

That’s the foundation of 鶹Ƶ’s new integrative concentration in sport studies and management. Launching in fall 2026, the program examines sport at every level—from tee ball to the Olympics—through a multifaceted lens.

“With this integrative concentration, 鶹Ƶ is putting a genuinely unique twist on the field of sport study,” says Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences David Kamitsuka. “By integrating classroom and experiential learning—and approaching sport via a combination of data analysis, critical thinking, and historical study—students will have a deeper understanding of this complex and potentially transformative global force.”

Students enrolled in the sport studies and management integrative concentration are required to take courses in statistics or data science and in history or sociology—and then choose electives in related fields like journalism, documentary filmmaking, business, psychology, dance, and marketing.

In true 鶹Ƶ liberal arts fashion, these classes place sport in context with other fields of study. For example, the course Moneyball (and Pucks): Sports Economics underscores how an economist acts as a social scientist when making decisions for individuals, teams, and communities. Sport, Power, and Society meanwhile, uses historical and current events to examine how we use individual and collective power to create communities in and beyond sports.

“This integrative concentration allows students to connect their personal experiences and interests in sport and physical activity to their academic interests,” says Jo Line ’11, co-chair of the integrative concentration alongside William G. Smith Associate Professor of Sociology and Comparative American Studies Alicia Smith-Tran ’10.

“Students will have the opportunity to explore how academic expertise in a variety of disciplines can prepare them for professional opportunities in the sport industry. Business expertise amplifies their ability to create positive change in any endeavor,” says Lin. “Whether you're advancing scientific discovery, fighting for social justice, or transforming lives through art, meaningful impact requires mobilizing people and resources beyond yourself. Our program prepares students to effectively organize talent, build teams, and manage organizations to achieve the kind of far-reaching goals that no individual could accomplish alone.”

Students will tackle actual business challenges through:

Case-method learning featuring real-world business scenarios and consulting projects

Hands-on studio classes led by industry practitioners

Professional internships integrated with coursework

Capstone projects solving complex organizational challenges

Signature initiatives including the Ashby Business Scholars program and Impact Investment Advisory Group

Building expertise

The curriculum extends beyond the classroom through signature initiatives like the Ashby Business Scholars program, where students work directly with business leaders from 鶹Ƶ’s extensive alumni network. “Unlike traditional problem sets, which often present neatly packaged scenarios, our approach places students in dynamic environments where they must navigate ambiguity much like they would in an actual business setting,” Lin explains.

This hands-on approach builds on 鶹Ƶ's long tradition of experiential learning, exemplified by initiatives like successful student-run enterprises like the 鶹Ƶ Student Cooperative Association (OSCA). The new major also leverages existing strengths in areas like arts management, where students learn business principles by working directly with arts organizations and creative enterprises.

“We build the experience while we are delivering the lesson,” says Lin. “You can only explain how to ride a bike for so many minutes before you have to get on the bike, start trying things, and get feedback.” This philosophy shapes every aspect of the program, from first-year foundations to advanced strategy courses.

Next fall, 鶹Ƶ will welcome two new tenure-track faculty to the Business program: assistant professors Yongha (Yon) Kwon and Minah Park, both of whom are pursuing doctorates in management and human resources at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At 鶹Ƶ, Park—who also holds a master’s degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering and a doctorate in operations management—will teach classes in marketing, entrepreneurship, and operations. Kwon will teach courses in strategy and organizational behavior; he previously earned a master’s degree in business administration.

Lin emphasizes the program's broader vision: “The idea that business is solely about profits misses the deeper truth: profits are a byproduct of creating value for society. At its core, business begins with passionate people seeking to solve problems and improve lives. This applies far beyond traditional companies—modern scientific breakthroughs emerge from teams, not individuals. Artists increasingly collaborate to amplify their creative impact. Now more than ever, nonprofits and social enterprises need strong organizational skills to succeed.”

For more information about this new major, visit the Business website or read the cover story “Taking Care of Business” in the Fall 2024 issue of the 鶹Ƶ Alumni Magazine.

Program responds to strong student demand, welcomes first class in fall 2025.

News Story

Fri, 01/24/2025 - 12:00

Office of Communications

College of Arts and Sciences

Business

Associate Professor of Business Eric Lin speaks with a student after a fall 2024 class.

Off

false

Mike Crupi

Thu, 06 Feb 2025 22:52:38 +0000 azaleski 484591 at 鶹Ƶ Introduces Financial Economics Major to Meet Growing Student Interest /news/oberlin-introduces-financial-economics-major-meet-growing-student-interest 鶹Ƶ Introduces Financial Economics Major to Meet Growing Student Interest eburnett Thu, 12/19/2024 - 18:04

This fall, 鶹Ƶ College proudly launched a new major in Financial Economics, an innovative program designed to prepare students for careers in investment banking, asset management, venture capital, and related fields. She is working on The Eve of Slavery, a book about African women in 17th-century North America—and notably Elizabeth Key, who sued for freedom in 1656 on the grounds that her father was a free white man.

She credits all of it—her extraordinary scholarship and her Genius Grant—to the late Adrienne Lash Jones, the first tenured Black woman in 鶹Ƶ’s Africana Studies (then Black Studies) Department and the third in the college’s history. Jones was celebrated for introducing an Africanist perspective to the emerging Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies program, for her relentless pursuit of a more just world, and for her formidable presence on campus.

Jones was “not some kind and sweet and soft mentor,” says Morgan, speaking by phone while walking through Times Square en route to her “egghead heaven” at the library. “She was hard and she was a little scary. She didn’t take any foolishness, and as a result, she made me work harder—more than any other professor that I had at 鶹Ƶ. I wouldn’t have gone to graduate school in history. I wouldn't have thought about doing Afro-American women’s history without her. She gave me something to aspire to—this model of what was possible. And that’s what set me in motion.”

Morgan learned of her MacArthur honor via phone call. Her initial reaction was disbelief. “I sort of yelled What? What are you saying? And I feel like tears just shot straight out of my head.”

The reality of her accomplishment is still sinking in. “You know, like many academics, you see the MacArthur list and you just think What a testament to the fact that your work makes a difference. As a professor, as a historian who works in the early modern period, I don’t do work that’s super popular—I don’t work on the civil rights movement, for example—it’s slightly more esoteric. I know that I’ve had an impact on my students. I know that I’ve had an impact on the field, but to have that acknowledged at such a huge scale just feels astonishing to me. I still can’t quite believe that it’s happened. And I feel incredibly humbled and honored.”

As for her stipend, Morgan is interested in using some of it to investigate other ways of telling important stories—to share the history she has uncovered about the experiences of Black women in colonial America with more people than graduate students and other historians. She wants a wider audience to know about these women, to understand “this is why what they went through is important in the history of this country—and in the way that we tell the history of this country.”

Learn more about Morgan at jenniferlylemorgan.com.

Tue, 01 Oct 2024 15:49:16 +0000 eburnett 478579 at Chemistry Professor Shuming Chen Receives $550,000 NSF Award /news/chemistry-professor-shuming-chen-receives-550000-nsf-award Chemistry Professor Shuming Chen Receives $550,000 NSF Award eburnett Thu, 04/25/2024 - 10:51

Shuming Chen, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at 鶹Ƶ College, has received a prestigious NSF CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. It is awarded to junior teacher-scholars “who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.”

Chen completed a PhD at Yale University in 2016 and has been a member of the 鶹Ƶ faculty since 2020.

The CAREER program is highly competitive, and proposals come from both research universities and primarily undergraduate institutions. As a result, it is unusual for a faculty member at a liberal arts college to receive a CAREER award. “Shuming’s receiving this award illustrates the caliber of research that goes on in her lab and that is possible at 鶹Ƶ,” says professor Catherine Oertel, chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.

Provided over five years, support fuels ongoing faculty-student research as well as education-access initiatives.

News Story

Thu, 04/25/2024 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Awards and Honors

College of Arts and Sciences

Biochemistry

Chemistry

Shuming Chen

Catherine Oertel

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Professor Shuming Chen (left) works with a student in 鶹Ƶ’s chemistry labs.
