programs honor the theme "Black History Year," which reflects the conviction that the study of Black people and culture merits attention beyond the boundaries of a dedicated month. To coincide with March's designation as Women's History Month, many events also emphasize the achievements and experiences of Black women.

The mid-month start of programming is the result of 鶹Ƶ’s altered academic calendar for 2021-22, which sees students returning to campus this week for spring semester—nearly three weeks later than in normal years.

The schedule of conservatory programming is listed below. Information about many additional events on campus can be found on the Black History Month page at 鶹Ƶ.edu.

Alumni Panel:
Welcome (Back) to the Table: A Conversation for Black Students on Navigating 鶹Ƶ and Beyond
Saturday, February 26, at 4:30 p.m.
Birenbaum Innovation and Performance Space
A host of 鶹Ƶ alumni reflect on their experiences as students and young professionals. Presenters will share their experiences navigating academic and career spaces that are notoriously nonrepresentative of people of color. Speakers include 鶹Ƶ alumni, current students, STRONG scholars, as well as professionals in careers ranging from internal medicine to computer science. The summit will also include a resource fair, in which current students can see firsthand the resources available to them, including campus partners such as the Multicultural Resource Center and the Black Scientists Guild (BSG).

After a lengthy hiatus, the BSG was recently relaunched by Olivia Woods ’19 and Daniel Mukasa ’19. Junior Kaitlyn Rivers, a biology major and art history minor, sought support from the BSG herself from then-chairs Woods and Mukasa before taking on the role of chair.

Rivers says that the summit came as a response to students’ concerns that they lack the professional development skills and preparation not only to pursue, but imagine themselves in STEM careers.

“Due to the lack of representation in STEM, lack of professional preparation, and imposter syndrome, many students of color choose not to pursue STEM majors,” she says. “This yields a massive impact on the participation and retention of these students.”

In addition to bringing students face-to-face with leaders in STEM fields they can network with, the summit will also provide students with a platform to exhibit their own research. Rivers says that this opportunity is one of the reasons the event is open not just to people of color and to mark Black History Month, but to professors as well. “I want everyone to join in, celebrate these students, and be allies in these kinds of situations,” she says.

Kaitlyn Rivers ’20

The summit is not only intended to poise students for professional success after graduation, but it specifically opens up room for conversations about underrepresentation in STEM. By bringing in black professionals who have succeeded in their fields in the midst of adversity, students can feel that they, too, can follow in their footsteps.

“They will talk about what it’s like to be a minority in a high-demand field that doesn’t seem to have a demand for people of color,” Rivers says. “A lot of times, your career looks just like your undergraduate and master’s degree programs: you’re the only person of color in the room.”

Although STEM in Color is a distinct example of the support the BSG extends to its students, the organization is a constant source of encouragement and guidance for students throughout the academic year. In addition to providing mentorship and professional development support for black students, the BSG connects students to internships, funds students’ travel and registration expenses for conferences, and provides monetary support for additional college expenses, such as textbooks.

In addition to tangible support, such as opening a workspace in the Center for Learning, Education and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR) during reading period where students could study, Rivers also acts as an intermediary support for students, answering their questions and providing them with someone to lean on. “It’s my job to make them feel included in the departments and make sure they are on the right track,” she says.

Rivers says that undertakings such as creating a study area in the CLEAR center and organizing the summit have been made possible with the support of one of her staff mentors, Nicollette Mitchell, director of CLEAR .

But Rivers doesn’t want the energy from the summit to lose steam at the end of the weekend.

“I hope that the summit has a long-term effect,” she says. “We want permanent guidance. I hope that professors, staff, and students realize that it’s possible to make change in the institution.”

Discover STEM in Color and other Black History Month events

News Story

Fri, 02/22/2019 - 12:00

Erin Ulrich ’18

Hosted by 鶹Ƶ College’s Black Scientists Guild and the Black History Month Committee, STEM in Color will highlight the academic and career journeys of black professionals, alumni, and current students in STEM fields.

Student Organizations

Events

Black History Month

Academics & Research

Biology

Physics

Biology

Physics and Astronomy

Kaitlyn Rivers ’20, chair of the Black Scientists Guild.

Off

false

John Seyfried

Fri, 22 Feb 2019 14:53:58 +0000 eulrich 153701 at Jazz Violinist Regina Carter to Perform Feb. 23 /news/jazz-violinist-regina-carter-perform-feb-23 Jazz Violinist Regina Carter to Perform Feb. 23 anagy Thu, 02/08/2018 - 15:37

Virtuoso violinist Regina Carter will bring her tour program, Simply Ella, to 鶹Ƶ’s Finney Chapel on February 23 at 8 p.m. during the college’s Black History Month celebration.

Carter is the foremost jazz violinist of her generation. When he came to 鶹Ƶ, however, he didn’t immediately make the connection that Hogan, an accomplished concert pianist and choral director, was a 1979 graduate of the Conservatory of Music.

It wasn’t until his second semester, when Williams was having conversations with students majoring in vocal performance, that he discovered Hogan’s relationship to 鶹Ƶ. He found that 鶹Ƶ’s history with black spirituals runs deeper than Moses Hogan: Musicians such as R. Nathaniel Dett, Revella E. Hughes, and Francois Clemmons trained at 鶹Ƶ and went on to become pioneers in the genre.

“I think it would be great to further educate the campus community about black choral music,” says Williams, a second-year majoring in anthropology and musical studies. “Whether this takes the form of an entire course, a couple of featured lectures, or some fun interactive programs, we need to implement more ways of interacting with this content.”

To that end, Williams has organized a Moses Hogan Sing-Along in celebration of Black History Month. The event, which will take place Thursday, February 22 in Warner Concert Hall, welcomes anyone who enjoys singing to rehearse some of Hogan’s most famous spiritual arrangements in hopes of learning more about his art.

Williams spent time with the Morehouse College Glee Club for winter term. Credit: Courtesy of DaQuan Williams

“It also aims to give aspiring choral conductors like me the opportunity to get hands-on experience leading an ensemble of singers,” says Williams.

Williams led a similar event during last year’s Black History Month programming, but this year he has devoted more time to planning and researching. For this winter term experience, he visited historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that have played an integral role in the instruction and production of prominent black musicians. These include Fisk University, Kentucky State University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College, all located near Atlanta.

“I have learned so much about the culture and musical history of these HBCUs. These institutions are the reason why African American spirituals are as widely disseminated and venerated as they are today.”

Despite 鶹Ƶ’s legacy and impact on black choral music, Williams is among a vocal group on campus who have expressed a need for more education and inclusion of music from non-western cultures. He says he has engaged with Conservatory Associate Dean for Academic Support Chris Jenkins and conservatory faculty members Fredara Hadley and Charles McGuire to address the issue head-on.

Jenkins and Hadley are holding open lectures centered around African American classical music and the black history of the conservatory during Black History Month. It also may be used philosophically to convey the belief in a “universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity." This concept also served as the guiding principle for this year’s programming during 鶹Ƶ’s Black History Month, themed Ubuntu: I am Because We Are.

For third-year environmental studies major, politics minor and Black History Month committee member Skyler Davis, ubuntu is something that has application in daily life. “Ubuntu conveys kindness,” stated Davis. “I don't want it to be a profound concept; I want it to be a natural, everyday belief.”

The series of programs in this month-long tribute aims to express unity, community togetherness, and continued struggle for recognition. The collection of speakers, workshops and other events convey a strong commitment to ubuntu as a foundation for Africana communities.

Among the broad array of performances is a re-imagined American classical theater production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, starring Oscar-nominated actress Margaret Avery. Directed by 鶹Ƶ Associate Professor of Theater and Africana Studies Justin Emeka '95, this production on February 20 at Cleveland Playhouse Square features Williams’ text with black culture and music incorporated into the classic story. Members of the campus community will also have the opportunity to attend a performance of Oh! Freedom: Commemorating the Negro Spiritual and the Underground Railroad when Wesley Williams returns to campus at 7 p.m. on February 11 for this performance at 鶹Ƶ’s First Church.

Another of the month’s events is a talk by Eddie Glaude Jr., a professor of religion and African American studies at Princeton, who coined the term “value gap” which is the “belief that white people matter more than others.” Glaude will discuss how this mindset is entrenched within American values, practices, and systems at 7:30 p.m. February 23 in Dye Lecture Hall.

“This month is about reflecting our culture and history and various forms of heritage,” said RaShelle Peck, Black History Month cochair and faculty in residence. Among one consideration when planning the month’s events was how to identify the programs for inclusion.“How do we create events that help us celebrate Africana and also address the problems that our community faces?” said Peck. “We chose to focus on the theme of community given the particularly precarious situation in the country and globally.”

For Davis, the goal of any Black History Month is to “educate, inspire, heal, and fight back” regardless of the political climate. “It's important for us to have a dialogue both within our community and in others about what has happened, what is happening, and where we go from here,” emphasized Davis.

Black History Month at 鶹Ƶ officially begins with an opening meal on February 5 at the Afrikan Heritage House. Throughout the month, a diversity of programming takes place both on and off campus and includes teach-ins, talks, and theatrical performances.

More about programming for Ubuntu, I am Because We Are is on the Black History Month webpage and the 鶹Ƶ Events Calendar.

News Story

Thu, 02/02/2017 - 12:00

Hillary Hempstead

Cultural Celebrations

Black History Month

Off

false

Fri, 10 Feb 2017 21:10:52 +0000 hhempste 34016 at
