Wurtzel has spent his entire career helping businesses thrive. Under his leadership of Circuit City, including a 14-year tenure as CEO, the consumer electronics and appliances retailer grew into a top-performing Fortune 500 company. Wurtzel also has been an active investor in startups and served on the boards of multiple public and private companies, including Office Depot.

Now future generations of 鶹Ƶ business leaders will be able to follow in Wurtzel’s footsteps, thanks to a transformative gift made by the 1955 鶹Ƶ graduate and his wife, Irene. The Wurtzels have committed $5 million to establish the Alan L. ’55 and Irene R. Wurtzel Endowed Fund for Business Education, which will provide the support necessary to enhance business education at 鶹Ƶ. The $5 million gift is contingent on raising an additional $5 million, as the goal is to encourage other donors to support an expanded business program at 鶹Ƶ.

“We are excited and deeply grateful for this gift,” says Associate Professor of Business Eric Lin. “In addition to academic excellence, 鶹Ƶ has deep strengths in creative domains and social change. We want to build a program that complements these long-standing traditions and integrates well with the college and conservatory. And we want to introduce opportunities to build new capabilities. With this generous support, we’ll be able to do all these things—and build a world-class business program that prepares our students to make an outsized impact on the world.”

Photo courtesy of Alan L. ’55 and Irene R. The fund will also support the Ashby Business Scholars, a selective experiential learning opportunity for 鶹Ƶ students that celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Additionally, the fund will support salaries and benefits for faculty and staff and bring business leaders and short-term faculty to campus.

An honorary 鶹Ƶ trustee, Alan Wurtzel is widely recognized as a highly engaged, fiercely loyal, generous, and inspiring member of the 鶹Ƶ community.

“In this day and age, a college education costs in excess of a quarter of a million dollars,” he says. “Parents and students need assurance that when they graduate, they can get a job, repay any debts, and support a reasonable lifestyle. Hopefully, this gift and the matches it inspires will enable 鶹Ƶ to attract a wider group of students and equip them to find meaningful employment.”

In 2024, 鶹Ƶ will create an ad hoc advisory committee of internal and external representatives to advise on the business program and focus on raising funds for the $5 million match. Bazelon of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., before becoming an associate of a Washington law firm and then serving as the legislative assistant to Senator Joseph Tydings.

Circuit City was founded in 1949 in Richmond, Virginia, by Alan’s father, Sam Wurtzel, as a single store with only $13,000 in investment. Alan joined the business in 1966 as vice president for legal affairs, launching a 35-year career with the company that found him serving as CEO and chair of the board. In that time, Circuit City grew from $50 million to $12 billion in revenue; additionally, the company was celebrated as having one of the best-performing stocks on the New York Stock Exchange for decades and was featured in Jim Collins’ 2001 book Good to Great. Alan also served as a director of Dollar Tree Stores, Inc., and served on the board of Office Depot from 1989 to 1996. In 2012, he published the book Good to Great to Gone: The 60-Year Rise and Fall of Circuit City, which chronicles the company’s history.

Irene R. Wurtzel is an award-winning playwright and community activist. Her musical Onward Victoria, about the first woman to run for U.S. president, appeared on Broadway and off-Broadway. His gift to 鶹Ƶ grew out of his friendship with author and musician James McBride, a 1979 graduate of 鶹Ƶ College. The gift was made in recognition of the institution’s long legacy of access and social justice advocacy. In particular, Rollins was moved by 鶹Ƶ’s place as the first institution of higher learning to adopt a policy to admit students of color and the first to confer degrees to women, and by the contributions of alumni such as Will Marion Cook, a black violinist and composer who studied at 鶹Ƶ in the 1880s and who went on to become an important teacher and mentor to Duke Ellington.

Commitment to inclusive excellence and social impact remain foundational to 鶹Ƶ’s educational mission, just as Rollins has long derived meaning through service to his fellow man.

“That the legendary Sonny Rollins—an artist of truly extraordinary accomplishment, soulfulness, and character—would entrust 鶹Ƶ to steward his legacy is the highest honor, and deeply humbling,” says Dean of the Conservatory Andrea Kalyn. “We are so very grateful to James McBride—whose own life and work stands in testament to 鶹Ƶ’s values—for shepherding this gift, which has a singular power to demonstrate for our students the full dimension of their obligation as musicians in this world, to inspire them to fulfill that obligation far beyond their years as students, and so to advance 鶹Ƶ’s own legacy of impact.”

Beginning in spring 2018, 鶹Ƶ jazz studies majors may audition for the 鶹Ƶ Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble—“The Sonny Ensemble.” Students may be accepted into the ensemble through annual auditions at any time during their 鶹Ƶ Conservatory education. Qualified incoming students may be accepted into the ensemble upon their decision to attend 鶹Ƶ.

Each student’s candidacy will be considered on the basis of four criteria: an audition for 鶹Ƶ’s jazz faculty, evidence of academic achievement, thoughtful response to a question about the place of jazz in the world, and service to humanity.

Variable in size, the Sonny Ensemble will perform in flexible configurations in both formal settings and outreach programs, in venues across the region and around the world. Members, called “Sonny Scholars,” must dedicate at least two semesters to performing in the ensemble.

More than a mere spot in an elite unit, membership in the ensemble requires a commitment to service through music and willingness to give for others—core principles exemplified by Rollins throughout his life and career.

Sonny Scholars fulfill this mission in part through a required winter-term project—approved by each student’s principal studio professor—that embodies Rollins’ spirit of giving. In this way and others, each musician in the ensemble is an ambassador not just for jazz, but for all people.

“The humanity element has to be a big presence in everything young players do,” says Rollins, now 87. “People are hungry for a reason to live and to be happy. We’re asking these young musicians to look at the big picture, to tap into the universal power of a higher spirit, so they can give people what they need. Giving back to others teaches inner peace and inner spirituality. Everything is going to be open for them if they devote themselves in this way.”

Each ensemble member’s commitment will be memorialized in the Sonny Scholar Ledger, a volume that declares each musician’s adherence to the principle of giving. The cover of the ledger is emblazoned with these words from Rollins: “Trust that later on in life, there’s something bigger for you when you serve others.”

The first signature is that of Rollins.

The ledger will be permanently displayed in the Bertram and Judith Kohl Building, home of 鶹Ƶ’s Division of Jazz Studies. The gift also includes a 1972 Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone, mouthpiece, and reed played by Rollins, which will be displayed with the ledger.

“This gift is incredibly powerful for us,” says Bobby Ferrazza, professor of jazz guitar and director of the Division of Jazz Studies. “It creates a direct link for our students to one of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz—and to his ideals. In aspiring to participate in this group, our students will be imbued with the humanity and musical values established by Mr. Rollins himself. The founding principles of the ensemble will be singularly inspirational for our department, today and for generations to come.”

Inaugural auditions for the Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble at 鶹Ƶ Conservatory will take place in spring 2018. Additional details will be available at a later date.

Those interested in joining Sonny Rollins in support of this endeavor are invited to visit www.oberlin.edu/donate, email giving@oberlin.edu, or call 440-775-8273.

About Sonny Rollins

Born in New York City in 1930, Walter Theodore “Sonny” Rollins started playing the saxophone at the age of eight, receiving guidance from pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. By the time he finished high school, Rollins was playing professionally in the Harlem clubs near his home. In seven decades of performing, he collaborated with countless jazz luminaries, from Miles Davis to McCoy Tyner, and made more than 60 records showcasing his unsurpassed improvisational chops and distinct compositional voice. Rollins won multiple Grammy Awards, including a 2004 award for lifetime achievement, and was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2010.

Acclaimed writer and musician James McBride, a 1979 graduate of 鶹Ƶ College, praises Rollins not only for his musicianship, but for his “humility, deep spirituality, and a reflective studiousness that included the study of religion, philosophy, and existentialism.”

“His immense musical vocabulary, creative originality, and profound body of work mark him as one of the greatest musicians of any serious music, no matter what name it is given, no matter what era or century in which it was made,” McBride has said of Rollins.

About 鶹Ƶ Conservatory

Founded in 1865 and situated amid the intellectual vitality of 鶹Ƶ College, the 鶹Ƶ Conservatory of Music is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in America and the only major conservatory dedicated primarily to the education of undergraduate musicians. Hailed as a “national treasure” by The Washington Post, 鶹Ƶ was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2009. The conservatory incorporated jazz into its curriculum in 1973. Lewis, the late philanthropist and chairman of Progressive Insurance Company.

The Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center will become the cornerstone of 鶹Ƶ’s Green Arts District, an ongoing development encompassing the northeast corner of North Main Street and East College Street. The Lewis Center project is a planned 100,000-square-foot, mixed-use development that will incorporate renewable energy systems, and it is designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Platinum rating. In addition to a 70-room hotel and conference center, the complex will include commercial and office space, a culinary training facility, and a restaurant featuring locally grown and sourced fare.

鶹Ƶ College has recognized Peter B. Lewis for his $5 million gift toward the project, which is part of 鶹Ƶ’s $250 million comprehensive campaign. Mr. Lewis' gift is the single largest contribution in 鶹Ƶ’s campaign for support of the Green Arts District, and came in the form of a challenge that was successfully matched dollar-for-dollar by other donors. To date, the college has raised more than $213 million for its campaign initiatives.

“鶹Ƶ College is profoundly grateful and honored to be included in Peter B. Lewis’ legacy of funding groundbreaking projects,” says President Marvin Krislov. “His generosity brings us a significant step closer to fulfilling our goal of becoming a climate positive community.”

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $32 million, and it will be financed with a mix of private funding and new market tax credits. Construction will be completed in four phases, during which parts of the hotel and the kitchen and dining area will remain operational. A spring groundbreaking is anticipated and the entire facility is expected to be completed and operational in January 2016.

Adam Lewis, son of Peter Lewis and a benefactor of 鶹Ƶ’s center for environmental studies, says his father wasn’t known for being an environmentalist, but he was known to be a visionary figure. “He envisioned a part of the country and the world made stronger and more resilient through green development. Though he wouldn’t live to see the realization of his vision, he was willing to initiate it.”

Conceived as a catalyst for larger patterns of sustainable development and technological innovation in the Green Arts District, the Peter B. Lewis Center is envisioned to set a new standard for hotels and commercial buildings. Using locally sourced materials and thoughtful, provocative design, it will become a valuable amenity to both the campus and the community.

“Peter B. Lewis built one of the most remarkable companies on the planet—appropriately named Progressive,” remarks 鶹Ƶ College Trustee Stewart Kohl ’77, co-CEO of Cleveland-based global private equity firm The Riverside Company. “He challenged the status quo, violated unneeded norms, and never rested on a laurel. This way of life inspires much of what we do at 鶹Ƶ College and in particular the new Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center—a game-changer that will transform both downtown 鶹Ƶ and notions of hospitality and environmental performance.”

Development of the Lewis Center and the Green Arts District is integral to the long-range plans of the 鶹Ƶ Project, a joint effort of the city and college that will transform 鶹Ƶ into a model for sustainable economic development.

Both Peter and Adam Lewis have been instrumental in bringing 鶹Ƶ to the forefront of the ecological design movement, says David W. Orr, the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics and senior adviser to the president of 鶹Ƶ College. “The Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center will be a ‘Platinum’ facility, likely the first such within the new U.S. Green Building Council standards. As the keystone for the Green Arts District and the vision of the 鶹Ƶ Project, it will be a milestone for the college, the city, and the green design field.”

In addition to fundraising for the Green Arts District, 鶹Ƶ’s $250 million comprehensive campaign, 鶹Ƶ Illuminate, includes targeted goals to support scholarships and access to an 鶹Ƶ education; support for faculty; curricular innovation; health and wellness, and annual giving.

News Story

Tue, 02/25/2014 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Community

Giving

An artist’s rendering of 鶹Ƶ’s new hotel and conference center.

Off

false

Solomon Cordwell Buenz

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:04:10 +0000 Anonymous 11516 at Campaign Crosses $175M Milestone /news/campaign-crosses-175m-milestone Campaign Crosses $175M Milestone anagy Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:04

鶹Ƶ Illuminate, the college’s $250 million fundraising campaign, has reached the $175 million mark.

鶹Ƶ Illuminate: A Campaign for College and Conservatory is a seven-year, $250 million fundraising and engagement effort that aims to broaden access to an 鶹Ƶ education, strengthen the campus community, enrich the academic program, and better position students for success after they graduate.

“Our success to date is the result of gifts from nearly 31,000 donors, including alumni, faculty and staff, parents, organizations, and friends of the college,” says Bill Barlow, vice president for development and alumni affairs.

Trustee leadership has been a driving force in the campaign’s success, and trustee giving makes up some of the most notable campaign gifts. The largest contribution to date, $13.5 million, comes from Clyde McGregor ’74, chair of the 鶹Ƶ Board of Trustees. McGregor has provided financial support to a number of campaign priorities, including the Bertram and Judith Kohl Building, scholarships for students who need high levels of financial aid, professional development for mid-career faculty, and an endowed professorship in neuroscience.

While trustee giving has been generous, participation across all constituencies — from individual gifts to matching grants from foundations and corporations — plays a vital role in raising the funds necessary to sustain 鶹Ƶ’s commitment to academic, artistic, and musical excellence.

“We still have a long way to go, and additional support is crucial to meeting the campaign’s goals,” Barlow says.

The campaign is raising funds to support the following priorities:

Scholarships—$90 million

Faculty and faculty-student experience—$35 million

Curricular and co-curricular innovation—$40 million

Green Arts District—$20 million

Physical and emotional health and wellness—$15 million

鶹Ƶ annual giving—$30 million

The $250 million goal includes $20 million in completed funding for the Bertram and Judith Kohl Building. Made possible by gifts from Stewart ’77 and Donna Kohl and others, the Kohl Building is home to one of the nation’s top jazz programs.

鶹Ƶ kicked off the public phase of its fundraising campaign in September 2012. Since then, the college has held regional campaign events in New York City and Washington, D.C. The final 鶹Ƶ Illuminate regional kickoff event will take place this fall in San Francisco.

News Story

Tue, 05/21/2013 - 12:00

Amanda Nagy

Giving

Off

false

Dale Preston '83

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:04:59 +0000 anagy 12471 at
