During her time on campus, she deepened her own commitment to social justice and public service with a double major in <a href="/node/3431">Africana studies</a> and <a href="/node/3396">law and society</a>. </p> <p>Harris’ lifelong interest in public-service law has culminated in her receiving the prestigious <a href="https://www.thegatesscholarship.org/scholarship">William H. Gates Public Service Law Scholarship</a>. Named for the former prominent attorney, philanthropist, and father of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the scholarship covers all expenses to the University of Washington School of Law and includes guaranteed internships for each recipient. In accepting the award, Harris has committed to working in public service for at least five years following graduation—a commitment that paves the way for her planned career as a civil rights attorney. </p> <p>“I have a lifetime of experiences that built up to this moment,” she says. “I have known that I wanted to be a lawyer since I was 14.” </p> <p>Raised in a suburb of Seattle, Harris was exposed to systemic racism and structural inequality from a young age. “I come from a family of blue-collar Black, white, and Filipino laborers,” she says. “My family is a microcosm of society’s failure to address the basic needs of BIPOC and working-class people; I grew up witnessing the impacts of these systemic failures daily.” </p> <p>Her father, a dedicated factory worker who was committed to providing for his family, was exposed to toxic chemicals in the workplace for decades. As a result, he developed an occupational lung disease, and his preexisting heart condition worsened. </p> <p>“I learned about the intersection of race, class, education—or lack thereof—as well as environmental racism and health disparities, and felt called to fight them at a young age,” Harris says.</p> <p>In high school, she devoted time volunteering, protesting, and grassroots organizing with groups such as the <a href="https://www.aclu-wa.org/">American Civil Liberties Union of Washington</a> and a local community youth council. While attending �鶹��Ƶ, she ran a successful social media campaign and petition that resulted in her former high school replacing its Confederate rebel mascot. “Parents and students alike thanked me for my perseverance, expressing that the mascot change would promote a safe and inclusive learning environment for students of color,” she says.</p> <p>Deeply affected by the death of 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant at the hands of Columbus, Ohio, police, Harris raised more than $2,000 to assemble and distribute self-defense kits for Black women and femmes throughout the state. “I used the slogan ‘We protect us’ for the self-defense kit distribution because Black Americans cannot rely on police protection within a structurally racist system,” she says. Also at �鶹��Ƶ, she was a member of <a href="https://oberlinstudentsforafreepalestine.wordpress.com/">Students for a Free Palestine</a>. The club’s work, and her experiences with lawyers fighting for Palestinian human rights, further fueled her desire for a career in public-service law.</p> <p>Today, Harris is more determined than ever to dismantle systemic racism and address socio-environmental challenges. After law school, she hopes to work in the NAACP’s Environment and Climate Justice Division or another nonprofit that supports her advocacy of decolonial frameworks to counter environmental racism. </p> <p>She credits her �鶹��Ƶ professors—including <a href="/node/4981">Charles Peterson</a> in Africana studies, <a href="/node/4931">Joyce Babyak</a> in religion, and <a href="/node/384671">Amanda Zadorian</a> in politics—for shaping her academic life and her career aspirations through their formal guidance and teaching, as well as through regular chats about current events during office hours.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Véronique Harris grew up a witness to inequality. Truman Scholarship Foundation</a> <span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span>, an organization that serves as the nation’s official living memory to our 33rd-president, it has awarded numerous scholarships to those interested in careers in public service. But a high number of those—20 in total—have been awarded to students at �鶹��Ƶ. Among top liberal arts institutions, �鶹��Ƶ ranks third in Truman Scholars, just behind Wellesley, with 21, and Swarthmore, with 26.</p> <p>Recipients of the highly selective scholarship receive up to $30,000 to apply toward graduate study in the United States or abroad, along with enhanced access to competitive graduate schools and access to scholar programs. According to the foundation, nominations for the award have increased by more than 30 percent during the past six years. And all while the scholarship has become increasingly competitive, �鶹��Ƶ students continue to garner the prestigious award.</p> <p>Case in point: in 2018, two �鶹��Ƶ students, seniors <a href="/news/kieran-minor-19-named-2018-truman-scholar">Kieran Minor</a> and <a href="/news/sadie-keller-19-wins-2018-truman-scholarship">Sadie Keller </a>were both named Truman Scholars.</p> <p>Director of Fellowships and Awards <a href="/node/31851" target="_blank">Nick Petzak</a> offers a possible explanation for the exceptionally high quantity of �鶹��Ƶ Truman scholars: acts of service are commonplace for �鶹��Ƶ students. “�鶹��Ƶ College has a long tradition of attracting students committed to lives of public service and the type of excellence the Truman Foundation looks for, including demonstrated commitment to leadership and academic excellence,” says Petzak.</p> <p>There’s no single avenue that one’s public service has to follow, and �鶹��Ƶ’s Truman Scholars have taken various paths in public service. Recipient Karin Drucker ’11 began her career in public service primarily focused on advocacy.</p> <p>“Before pursuing a graduate degree, my work had largely been as an advocate, working for nonprofits and doing other grassroots service.” Her long history of advocating for the needs of children and improving juvenile justice laid the foundation for her current pursuit: completing a juris doctor at the venerable institution that is Harvard Law School.</p> <p>For scholarship recipient Machmud Makhmudov ’16, a former Student Senate leader and student worker in the Bonner Center for Service and Learning, the track to becoming a Truman Scholar was wholly natural. “The values of the award just aligned with my motivation to be in public service,” says Makhmudov.</p> <p>After attending graduate school at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, followed by a stint working for speech writers in Washington D.C., he was accepted into the Marine Corps. Makhmudov has yet to employ the $30,000 he was awarded by the Truman Foundation, but he says that he may eventually use it to pursue a law degree after completing his military service. </p> <p>Truman Foundation Executive Secretary Andrew Rich says that the number of scholarship recipients at �鶹��Ƶ signals the investment that the college makes in supporting students who care about making a difference in their careers through public service leadership.</p> <p>“This is notable at a time when public service often seems undervalued within society. “[The foundation] tries to be a beacon for college students who care about making a difference, and �鶹��Ƶ is supporting that cause among its students.”</p> <p>When reflecting on the scholarship, Makhmudov encourages Obies to apply.</p> <p>“�鶹��Ƶ students are better suited for it than they may believe. A lot of students count themselves out, but so many are involved in activism or volunteer work. They may not think of what they’re doing as public service because doing those things is such a big part of the culture at �鶹��Ƶ,’’ he says.</p> <p>“But that’s an advantage that �鶹��Ƶ has–service is so ingrained in the experience. The application itself is among the most demanding for undergraduate fellowships competitions, requiring months of work to summarize experiences and present a detailed, data-driven, and coherent 10-15 year plan for becoming a ‘change agent.’”</p> <p>Each new Truman Scholar receives up to $30,000 for graduate study. Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.truman.gov/our-mission/who-we-are">Truman Foundation</a> was created by Congress in 1975 as the living memorial to President Truman and the Presidential Memorial to Public Service. The Foundation’s mission is premised on the belief that a better future relies on attracting to public service the commitment and sound judgment of bright, outstanding Americans.</p> <p>This year, the Foundation reviewed 756 applications from 313 institutions. The Truman Finalist Selection Committee chose 194 students from 137 institutions. Founded in 2012, GDS provides scholarships, mentorship, and professional development for students who came to the United States at a young age and are legally protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Previously limited to students from the Carolinas, GDS is now expanding nationwide and plans to offer up to 50 scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year. </p> <p>“We are honored and proud to align �鶹��Ƶ’s values with the impressive commitment to expanding the outreach of the Golden Door Scholars organization,” said Debra J. Chermonte, vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid. “We recognize that there are thousands of high-achieving DACA students each year who deserve access to a college education. It is our hope that �鶹��Ƶ’s efforts combined with the efforts of other colleges and university partners will make a real impact in the lives of Golden Door Scholars and their families.”</p> <p>Private scholarships for undocumented students are rare, and most Golden Doors Scholars reside in states where they are not afforded in-state tuition rates, making college out of reach financially. With the help of its partner institutions, GDS provides these students the opportunity to overcome these barriers. </p> <p>“We’ve been incredibly impressed by our 45 scholars, who are currently excelling at some of the nation’s top universities,” said Ric Elias, Golden Doors Scholars founder and CEO of Red Ventures. “Their success has emboldened us to double down on our efforts and help even more of the exceptionally talented young people being left behind by existing policies and bureaucracy.
