I started off working in the British Film Institute (BFI) restaurant, which was an exciting time. I worked during events and premieres including the BFI London Film Festival, and went to Q and As with my favorite directors. This experience was instrumental in my decision to apply to graduate school in film. I then interned with the Stephen Friedman Gallery during the Frieze London art fair, which again was an eye-opening experience as an art history graduate. Since then, I’ve been working for Royal Museums Greenwich as a visitor and sales assistant.</p> <p><strong>You‘re heading to Cambridge University for a Master of Philosophy. What will you be studying, and what was the application process like?</strong></p> <p>I’ll be studying for an MPhil in film and screen studies, and I intend to write my thesis on contemporary British feminist working-class cinema. I had been thinking about applying during my senior year, so it wasn't such a shock when I started writing the application this past autumn. I went to an open-day session and then got in touch with the supervisor in my department whom I wanted to work with and who has been amazingly kind. She was willing to go over drafts of my research proposal and gave me research recommendations, many of which I could find at the BFI library. All in all, it took me about two months to feel satisfied with the application—the research proposal was limited to one page, but that made it harder, as I had to contain so much in so little space. I also asked for two 鶹Ƶ professors to be my references well in advance; they have been extremely supportive, and I am very grateful to them.</p> <!---div class="obj-center"> <figure class="captioned-image"><img alt="Photo of a woman holding flowers standing in front of a field" height="1090" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/images-2019/nia_owen_body_photo.jpg" width="760" /> <figcaption><em>Mari in Llanddowror, 2016</em> from Owen&#39;s photographic project,&nbsp;<em>Hiraeth.</em><br /> Photo credit: Nia Owen</figcaption> </figure> </div---> <p><strong>Did any of your experiences at 鶹Ƶ lead to your decision to apply to graduate school?</strong></p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-right"><img alt="girl standing in field of tall grass" height="401" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/images-2019/nia_owen.jpg" width="400"> <figcaption>Mari in Llanddowror, 2016 from Owen’s photographic project,&nbsp;<em>Hiraeth</em>. Photo credit: Nia Owen</figcaption> </figure> <p>I majored in art history and studio art, with the latter focusing on fine art photography. I always knew I would go to grad school eventually because education is so important to me. The professors I met at 鶹Ƶ have directed that path in the most positive and informative way. What I am most thankful for are the close relationships I built with them. I am very grateful for Professor of Studio Art and Photography <a href="/node/5116" target="_blank">Pipo Nguyen-Duy</a>'s endless encouragement and support. He helped me so much artistically, professionally, and personally.</p> <p>Associate Professor of Studio Art <a href="/node/5136" target="_blank">Sarah Schuster</a> really informed my senior year by giving me so much confidence and inspiration for how my artistic career could go beyond the medium of photography. I came to 鶹Ƶ intending to major in cinema studies, but I was drawn to the art history major because of the professors! Also, in my last semester, I took the class&nbsp;Introduction to American Documentary with Visiting Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies <a href="/node/5291" target="_blank">Joshua Sperling</a>. I enjoyed the assignments and class discussions so much that it completely reignited my passion for film, which was unexpected, as it was a 100-level class and I was a senior!</p> <p><strong>Do you have any advice for current students who are looking to apply to graduate school?</strong></p> <p>Everything came together for me only in the autumn after graduating, once I had a taste of working life and exposure from working at the BFI. In the year since graduating, my ideas and knowledge have matured so much already, and I think my application was much stronger for it. I can only speak to applying to U.K. universities, but what I can recommend is starting as early as possible, even if it's just gathering information on what exactly you need to do when you apply. 鶹Ƶing to grad school is almost a full-time job in itself, so only apply if you're sure it's the right time for you. If it's relevant to your field and you think it's appropriate, get in touch with the supervisor you want to work with and ask (politely) if they are willing to discuss your research and ideas with you.</p> <p>Nia will begin a MPhil this fall, and she hopes to be more involved with the film industry through writing and researching. She is also looking into funding and planning a few photography projects.</p> <p><a class="view-more" href="https://niaowen.wixsite.com/niaowen" target="_blank">View her work online</a>.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-05-06T12:00:00Z">Mon, 05/06/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Phoebe Pan ’20</div> <div class="text-content field field--name-field-intro-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>After spending a year working within the art and film industries, Nia Owen ’18 is gathering her experiences and heading to Cambridge University for graduate school.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2360">After 鶹Ƶ</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2368">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2389">Young Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2405">Photography</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25301">Art History</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25436">Studio Art</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25256">Cinema and Media</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/pipo-nguyen-duy" hreflang="und">Pipo Nguyen-Duy</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/joshua-sperling" hreflang="und">Joshua Sperling</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/art" hreflang="und">Studio Art</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/cinema-studies" hreflang="und">Cinema and Media</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item"> Nia Owen ’18</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Photo Courtesy of Nia Owen</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/nia_owen_headshot.jpg?itok=h8Iopmnv" width="760" height="741" alt="Nia Owen against a city backdrop"> </div> Mon, 06 May 2019 18:11:26 +0000 eulrich 161541 at Aaron Cohen Named YoungArts Merit Winner /news/aaron-cohen-named-youngarts-merit-winner <span>Aaron Cohen Named YoungArts Merit Winner</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:01:50-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:01">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:01</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>First-year Aaron Cohen has been named a YoungArts Merit Winner in Photography by the <a href="http://www.youngarts.org/">National YoungArts Foundation</a>. Selected from more than 12,000 applications, the largest number to date, Cohen joins 819 young artists from all over the country in the literary, visual, design, and performing arts who are receiving the prestigious award. Winners receive validation by renowned mentors, opportunities to participate in YoungArts programs, a strong professional network, and guidance in taking important steps toward achieving their goals. Past winners include Emmy-winning actress Viola Davis and noted violinist Jennifer Koh ’97. A complete list of the 2016 winners is available <a href="http://youngarts.org/winners">online</a>. <br></p> <p>“On behalf of everyone at YoungArts, I want to congratulate all of our winners,” stated Lisa Leone, vice president of artistic programs for YoungArts. “As we kick off our 35th anniversary, we’re thrilled to see YoungArts is continuing to grow and develop into a remarkable and vibrant community of more than 20,000 artists who are making contributions to the art world today. I am excited to see how this year’s winners thrive as they participate in our transformative programs.” </p> <p>The Charlottesville, Virginia, native began studying photography his freshman year of high school with traditional film and worked in the school’s darkroom for two years before switching to digital and independently continuing his studies. “It was great to start by working hands-on with film, since you really have to understand the technical foundation of photography and the camera to create a well-composed photo,” he says. </p> <!-- Image gallery 13 embedded here --> <p>Cohen says he appreciates the possibilities the medium presents for self-exploration and documentation. “What I love about photography is the versatility and power of a photograph. There are so many fields and styles of photography, but with each, I think there's a powerful autonomy the photographer has over their work. My photographs are representations of my identity, so I'll often spend weeks looking over and editing a photo until I feel comfortable sharing that part of me with the public. When I take photographs, it is to document who I am at the moment and what I'm thinking about.” </p> <p>In April, Cohen will be traveling to New York City to take part in a weeklong intensive program for YoungArts award winners to present their work and learn from masters in their field. He says he is most looking forward to the master classes. “The YoungArts foundation has so many incredible mentors and alumni, and I'm just honored to now be a part of the organization,” he says. </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2016-02-12T12:00:00Z">Fri, 02/12/2016 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Kasey Cheydleur</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2405">Photography</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Aaron Cohen</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/jan_07-5_0.jpg?itok=oYfx2UL1" width="760" height="474" alt="NULL"> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:01:50 +0000 Anonymous 9736 at Asia in America Behind the Lens /news/asia-america-behind-lens <span>Asia in America Behind the Lens</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:03:18-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:03">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:03</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>“I just want to make my time well-spent,” says first-year Clover Tran. “I want to do something meaningful.” Tran’s thought is one shared by many 鶹Ƶ students with the opportunity to design a winter-term project that allows them to explore their interests and take advantage of the respite from full-time classes. For Tran and her five partners, this meant creating <i>Finding Asia in America</i>, a photography exhibition that sheds light on the stories and experiences of Asian Americans and Asians living in the United States. </p> <p>The team—composed of Tran and fellow first-years Jenny Xin Luan, Naomi Langer, and Xiaoqian Zhu, and second-years Jeong Hyun Hwang, and Holly Hoang—conceived of the idea as a way to combine an interest in photography and storytelling. Tran, an international student from Vietnam, originally planned to photograph Vietnamese people in the United States, but upon discovering similarities between her experience and those of other international students and students of Asian descent, she decided to join forces with her compatriots and broaden the scope of her lens. </p> <p>“I started to realize how I, as a Vietnamese girl, shared so many similar experiences with my Asian friends,” Tran writes on the project’s <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/photography-project-finding-asia-in-america#home">Indiegogo crowdfunding page</a>. “I started to realize how much we’ve had to struggle to fit into this American community. Culture shock, insecurity, homesickness, self-criticism, and lack of confidence: They haunted, or are still haunting, many of us everyday.”</p> <p>To explore the shared and individual experience of Asian immigrants and their descendents, the group set off for New York City. The students spent January 12-19 walking the city and approaching people in the streets for interviews and photographs. “We planned out what location we wanted to hit each day—so one day would be in Chinatown, and the next day would be Koreatown, or any location that has a higher concentration of a specific community of Asians,” says Hoang. Once they reached their destination for the day, the group would pair up, spread out, and approach their subjects. </p> <p>Despite many refusals for interviews and frequent language barriers between the team members and their subjects, the team returned to 鶹Ƶ with about 90 interviews and even more photographs. </p> <p>Sometimes, a little persistence led to uncovering truly remarkable stories such as that of a man who did not want to speak to them at first because he was an illegal immigrant. A second inquiry revealed the story of his journey to the United States, which took half a year. In Chinese, the man related how he finally crossed into the United States, and reached New York after several plane rides from China to France to, eventually, Mexico, and then a harrowing trek through the desert and mountains. Now that he has reached his destination, he must spend all of his time paying off his debts from the trip. </p> <p>Another subject of the project, a young Chinese woman adopted by an American family, described her experience of feeling left out when her friends talked about their birthdays. Because of the lack of information included by her birth parents when they put her up for adoption, she does not know for certain what time of day, or even the exact day, she was born. </p> <p>To share these stories, and many others, the group returned to 鶹Ƶ to reflect, review, edit, and compile the final product: an exhibition featuring a selection of about 40 photos and quotes that depict the stories of the people the team met during its travels in a <a href="http://www.humansofnewyork.com/">Humans of New York-inspired</a> gallery. According to Hwang, the group chose photos based on their quality and their ability to convey Asian American life to campus. “We want them to see what Asian Americans and Asians in America go through and change the misperceptions they might have had in the past,” Hwang says. </p> <p>The group says it hopes that, through an online collection of its photographs and interviews, <i>Finding Asia in America</i> will reach a wider audience, bringing together Asian Americans from around the country and spreading awareness of the stories of that community. “I hope that all the Asians and Asian Americans will look at the photos and the stories and think that nothing is impossible. They’ve been through a lot and they’ve overcome everything. I think we can all do that,” Tran says.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/806147492793242/">“Finding Asia in America” photography exhibition</a> takes place February 22-24 in the Science Center Perlik Commons and Bent Corridor. Join the students who put it together for an opening reception at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 22. Light refreshments will be provided. </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2015-02-20T12:00:00Z">Fri, 02/20/2015 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Rosalind Black</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2402">Winter Term</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2405">Photography</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Clover Tran</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/cover_photo_bw_copy_0.jpg?itok=KA4gMq31" width="760" height="285" alt="NULL"> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:03:18 +0000 Anonymous 10646 at
