As a Bonner Scholar, Tasso volunteered with the 鶹Ƶ City School District through the America Reads/Counts Program, tutoring students in grades K–9 in math. She also worked with the El Centro Volunteer Initiative, which connects 鶹Ƶ students, faculty, and community members with Latine residents in Lorain County through community engagement and educational outreach.

Tasso later continued her commitment to service through a winter term micro-internship in the U.S. Congress, where she advocated for Somali refugees in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District. Another winter term micro-internship took her to Medellín, Colombia, where she studied peace processes and justice through sustainability initiatives.

Wanting to dive deeper into her coursework on the experiences of Afro-Latine women in higher education, Tasso applied to the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program. Mellon Mays fellows receive two years of close mentorship to pursue research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Tasso’s project focuses on raising awareness and education about the Afro-Peruvian community.

Through her combined coursework, service, and research, Tasso has grown to understand the value of co-curricular experiences as she prepares for a life and career in community stewardship. “While having access to knowledge on a wide variety of topics is enriching, being able to apply them in a tangible way allows me to see the impact of a well-rounded education,” she says. “My time at 鶹Ƶ and my engagement with different CELA offices have also made me realize that theory without application does nothing, but action without information can harm the people you are working with.

“The opportunities I have gotten through CELA have allowed me to see the real-world applications of theories I’ve learned in various classes,” she adds. “These experiences not only allow me to build upon and improve my skills, but also to contribute meaningfully to the organizations that I am a part of.”

After 鶹Ƶ, Tasso, who has a double major in law and society and Hispanic studies, plans to pursue a PhD and continue engaging with social issues as both an academic and a public servant.

Tasso is a nominee for the CELA Award, recognizing outstanding engagement and achievement in connecting academic pursuits with experiential learning.

Blending community-based service, international experiential learning, and Mellon Mays research, Aina Tasso ’27 is building a future rooted in scholarship and community engagement.

News Story

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 12:00

By Kate Martin ’26

Engaged Liberal Arts

Bonner Center

Winter Term

Study Away

Undergraduate Research

Law and Society

鶹Ƶ

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97

0
Mon, 23 Mar 2026 16:52:57 +0000 kviancou 773262 at Connecting Hawaiian Identity and Global Advocacy /news/connecting-hawaiian-identity-and-global-advocacy Connecting Hawaiian Identity and Global Advocacy kviancou Mon, 03/23/2026 - 11:39

Through her work with 鶹Ƶ's Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA), Isabel Handa ’26 has bridged her Hawaiian identity with her academic and research pursuits.

Handa began her undergraduate research journey after being awarded a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF). In 2007, the graphic novel won the GLAAD Media Award, the Stonewall Book Award, the Publishing-Triangle Judy Grahn Nonfiction Award, and the Lambda Literary Award. The 2015 Broadway musical, meanwhile, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and took home five, including Best Musical.

In both mediums, Fun Home, which tells the story of Bechdel’s coming of age and coming out with a strong focus on her relationship with her closeted father, has been praised for its nuanced exploration of queerness. As such, the show's complex architecture was the work of many hands.

To inform the set and costume design, Early and the student cast and crew immersed themselves in 鶹Ƶ’s archives to find artifacts of queer life during Bechdel’s time as a student.

“That task of archiving queer life is so important to the DNA of this show, and [is] what Alison Bechdel is doing with her life,” Early says.

Dallas Street ’26, who portrays Alison in the Maple Avenue cast, cites as inspiration a presentation by Lee Must ’25, who came to campus to present his research on the 鶹Ƶ queer archives to the cast and crew. .

Street says that the Fun Home production also has its own collaborative “masterdoc” in which cast and crew members contribute notes and research to collectively draw from. For example, he researched Bechdel’s old blog posts for the production.

Costume design associate Calcifer Avins ’27, working under Associate Professor of Theater Chris Flaharty, drew inspiration from 鶹Ƶ archival photographs for their costume design for the character of Joan, Alison’s college girlfriend.

Avins says they and Flaharty also heavily referenced the Fun Home graphic novel in their design, particularly in the way that Bechdel draws her family. “We’re seeing what kind of pants they wore,” says Avins, who is interested in pursuing a career in costume design. “What are the shapes of the collars? He ended up choosing to declare an economics major. “I have learned about the interaction of the forces of demand and supply in a world of unlimited human wants and limited resources,” he says of his experience in the major. Then, he describes how he found himself pulled towards business.

“As I gained exposure through my classes, interacting with peers, Winter Term projects, and reading, I appreciated the enormous significance of business in our society,” he says. He realized that business is threaded through many aspects of our world today, and that understanding it could better equip him to achieve his goals.

While his major gave him an excellent grasp of economic concepts, taking business classes taught him how those concepts are applied across disciplines within complex, open-ended problem-solving.

“Economics has given me a theoretical framework of understanding how businesses and individuals make decisions to optimize outcomes, while business has given me a practical case of those frameworks at play,” Omukoko says.

What he learned in economics classes has complemented what he learned in business classes, and he is excited to graduate in the spring with a concentration in business. His interest in business is related to his upbringing.

“My interest in business stems from recognizing the wide gap between capital and ideas,” he explains. “This is especially true for my home country, Kenya, where there is a young, brilliant, innovative, and entrepreneurial population whose exceptional ideas do not spring forth due to a lack of capital.”

Omukoko feels motivated to improve upon this, using the knowledge he has gained in his classes.

“I hope to learn more about business and economics, understand how capital flows, and use my knowledge and research to promote greater efficiency and mobility of capital,” he states.

Not only is this his goal, but he is actively working towards it at present.

“Thanks in part to business classes, today I run an organization called LeadAfrik,” he says. “It provides a mutual mentorship platform for university students in Kenya, equipping them with tools to take on the mantle of leadership with courage and adherence to values of excellence.”

Because business at 鶹Ƶ is all about turning learning into action, Omukoko can apply what he knows to doing something he cares about. He discusses his gratitude for what the business integrative concentration has taught him.

“Beyond the knowledge I have acquired from my classes, business has enabled me to adopt a new way of thinking—where I am keen to notice where opportunities lie and, most importantly, think creatively about how to tap into those opportunities.”

Want to know how you could make a difference with business? health issues stoked by ongoing conversations soon after she arrived in 鶹Ƶ. Those campus connections inspired her to become involved on a national level—and this year led her to an Obie mentor in a somewhat unlikely place.

In January, Griffith completed a Winter Term internship at All Families Healthcare, a reproductive health clinic in rural Whitefish, Montana, where she worked under the guidance of nurse practitioner Helen Weems ’91, the clinic’s director. A former environmental studies major at 鶹Ƶ, Weems was celebrated locally for rebuilding All Families after its original location was intentionally destroyed, then for successfully suing the state of Montana to expand abortion access. Inspired by Weems' monumental victory—and with key support from biology professor Maureen Peters—Griffith secured an internship at Weems’ clinic during Winter Term of her junior year.

Now a rising senior with majors in psychology and gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, Griffith gained unique insight into the clinic’s day-to-day operations and the lives of the people who depend on them. "I was exposed to all aspects of a small, community-engaged, reproductive health-care clinic,” she says. “This included learning about administrative and clinical facets, research projects, continuing education, and community outreach."

Annie Griffith turned to Montana to serve in an 鶹Ƶ alumna’s reproductive health clinic.

News Story

Tue, 06/20/2023 - 12:00

Tyler Applegate

Winter Term

Internship

Pre-Medicine

Stem

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Psychology

Maureen Peters

Sara Verosky

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Psychology

Global Health

Annie Griffith (right) with Helen Weems ’91, director of All Families Healthcare in Whitefish, Montana, where Griffith served as an intern.

Off

false

courtesy of Annie Griffith

One of the things I find both interesting and disheartening about the health-care industry is the amount of medical gaslighting and trauma people experience upon entering a doctor’s office.”

— Annie Griffith

But the impact of Giffith’s experience extends far beyond the daily tasks she performed. From her clinic co-workers, and particularly Weems, she came away reassured by a field that had previously left her feeling discouraged. “One of the things I find both interesting and disheartening about the health-care industry is the amount of medical gaslighting and trauma people experience upon entering a doctor's office,” she says.

Nuances of human interaction are central to Griffith’s 鶹Ƶ studies too. She is a psychology research assistant under professor Sara Verosky, with whom she has worked on experiments that focus on how people make judgments about one another based on facial perceptions.

The compassion she witnessed at All Families turned her passion into a drive to pursue a career that supports reproductive rights, and she credits 鶹Ƶ with fostering that devotion. She considers campus a safe space for students to express their beliefs, grapple with societal issues together, and expand their understanding and expertise. She trained to be an abortion doula with the 鶹Ƶ Doula Collective, where she learned how to care for people experiencing abortions. During spring semester, she presented at 鶹Ƶ’s Reproductive Justice Symposium, joining fellow students in detailing practical implications related to abortion access in Ohio since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Her presentation included resources currently available as well as those no longer available as a result of the Supreme Court decision.

Griffith believes that academic institutions are the perfect place to cultivate sexual and reproductive health advocacy. “The best way for 鶹Ƶ to be supportive of their students who are passionate about these topics would be to support, advocate for, and fund the organizations that are already in place,” she says, emphasizing the importance of the Sexual Information Center (SIC) and Survivors of Sexual Harm and Allies (SOSHA), among other groups.

To Griffith, the simple things—such as donations of time, money, and activism—go a long way in alleviating the challenges faced by citizens in regions that are restricted in their access to reproductive health care. “Vote in local and national elections, call your representatives, talk to your older relatives who may have different opinions, and share your story,” she says.

Perhaps more than anything, Griffith’s journey underscores the transformative power of a dedicated community.

“Working at the clinic reinforced my passion for reproductive justice and health care equality,” she says, “and reminded me how important this work is.”

Tue, 20 Jun 2023 14:55:35 +0000 tapplega 458676 at Winter Term Takes Obies Near and Far /news/winter-term-takes-obies-near-and-far Winter Term Takes Obies Near and Far anagy Mon, 01/09/2023 - 14:34

The month of January at 鶹Ƶ is anything but winter slumber. Many students return to campus to learn a completely new skill or dive into an academic interest; others travel abroad for immersive experiences in language, culture, arts, and music. Some are gaining pre-professional skills through micro-internships sponsored by 鶹Ƶ alumni and friends of the college.

This year, some 2,500 students are engaged in projects through a four-week immersive venture of their choosing, individually or with a group, known as Winter Term.

Although a winter or January term is common at other colleges and universities, 鶹Ƶ’s Winter Term, now in its 55th year, isn’t confined to the classroom. Students use this time to explore a personal interest, develop new skills, conduct intensive research, prepare for careers, or expand an academic focus. Students are required to complete three Winter Term projects throughout their time at 鶹Ƶ, with 100 hours of work going toward each project.

鶹Ƶ’s Winter Term takes many forms. An ever-growing catalog offers faculty- and staff-led group projects, both domestically and abroad. Students are also free to design individual projects. For those who choose to stay on campus, 鶹Ƶ offers a robust calendar of social events for the month of January that includes planned activities, outings, and excursions, so those who choose to stay in 鶹Ƶ can easily engage with the community and build connections with fellow students. CELA’s mission is to empower 鶹Ƶ students to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom that enrich and complement their academic pursuits and position them to launch into meaningful post-graduate life.

The center, located on the garden level of Mudd, encompasses Academic Peer Advising; the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research; Career Exploration and Development, Digital Portfolio Program, Entrepreneurship, Fellowships and Awards, Study Away, Undergraduate Research, and Winter Term. Through individual mentoring, peer advising, and collaborative programming, CELA staff make visible a wide array of experiential learning options—from a Winter Term micro-internship to funded summer research.

In addition to bringing awareness to myriad co-curricular opportunities, CELA helps students plan ahead, seize opportunities, craft their educational narratives, and tell their stories to audiences within and beyond the college. Taking a developmental approach, CELA organizes programs into a framework of “explore, experience, launch” to guide students through initial exploration, transformative experiences, and professional pursuits.

CELA’s emphasis on collaboration and commitment to framing a cohesive educational narrative for students is also critical to the success of 鶹Ƶ’s signature programming for each class year. The blueprint for connected learning begins with incoming students’ experiences in a Peer Advising Leaders cohort and the closely aligned First-Year Seminar Program, which introduces students to liberal arts learning. The Sophomore Opportunities and Academic Resources (SOAR) program guides second-years through the process of declaring a major and crafting an academic and cocurricular plan. The Junior Practicum focuses on career exploration and putting skills into practice.

David Kamitsuka, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, articulates the philosophy of engaged liberal arts as an extension of the classical liberal arts model, attuned to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

“Classical liberal arts provide intellectual breadth and depth in the richness of humanistic, scientific and artistic inquiry, awakening students to the excitement of lifelong learning. An engaged liberal arts education draws on the dynamism of intellectual inquiry and puts it in the service of addressing the major challenges of contemporary life,” says Kamitsuka. “Through a model of education that helps students move between the theoretical and the applied, the classroom and real-world settings, engaged liberal arts helps students acquire the judgment, wisdom, practical skills, and sense of purpose essential for Obies to lead in our complex world.”

CELA's location in Mudd Center symbolizes this union of theory and practice, says Laura Baudot, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Terrell Main Library houses a rich history of knowledge; CELA grounds this knowledge, helping students to put rich tradition in dialogue with practice and to reflect on the complex relationship between learning and doing.”

News Story

Fri, 11/18/2022 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Academics & Research

College of Arts and Sciences

Bonner Center

Study Away

Winter Term

Career Exploration & Development

Undergraduate Research

Engaged Liberal Arts

A conference room in the new Center for Engaged Liberal Arts.

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones '97

Fri, 18 Nov 2022 20:54:04 +0000 anagy 450661 at Local Partnership Provides Hands-on Experience for Students Interested in Healthcare /news/local-partnership-provides-hands-experience-students-interested-healthcare Local Partnership Provides Hands-on Experience for Students Interested in Healthcare swargo Wed, 05/11/2022 - 10:08

鶹Ƶ College’s Pre-Medicine and Health Careers Program has entered into a partnership with Welcome Nursing Home that will provide students interested in a career in healthcare with an opportunity to gain clinical knowledge and grow their interpersonal skills.

Located in 鶹Ƶ, just a few minutes from campus, Welcome is a long-term care facility with nearly 100 residents. This past Winter Term, Aaron Ho ’23, Brielle Lam ’25, Cortny Robinson ’23, Youssaf Rouiha ’22, Revanth Sudhireddy ’25, and Michael Verret ’25 worked as temporary State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNAs) at Welcome. To participate in this experience, they had to complete an eight-hour online course approved by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“This collaboration allows pre-healthcare students to engage deeply with the systemic challenges associated with supporting people dealing with age-related and other health conditions that require full-time residential care,” said Professor of Biology and Pre-Medicine and Health Careers Program Director Maureen Peters. “The students interacted with a wide variety of health professionals who work to ensure that residents' physical, mental, and emotional needs are met.”

Students spent their days alongside nurses, psychologists, and psychiatrists, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Shadowing these employees gave them an inside look into the daily routines and tasks of healthcare professionals. Welcome Nursing Home Vice President Heidi Freas values the importance of the students’ involvement. “I believe this partnership with 鶹Ƶ College could really grow into a powerful tool to help students on the pre-med track gain hands-on knowledge and skills as they navigate their education and future career.”

Aside from gaining essential clinical knowledge, the students learned to apply values of empathy and compassion to their work. At Welcome, the students worked with the activities program team to assist residents with crafts and games. These bonding experiences emphasized the importance of getting to know the residents and their lived experiences.

First-year Brielle Lam says she has learned a lot through this partnership. “Learning how to interact with residents and see the importance of an empathetic bedside manner is critical to developing well rounded healthcare employees.”

Amani Green, assistant director for career readiness in the college’s Career Development Center, describes the project as mutually beneficial. “鶹Ƶ students were able to receive quality pre-medical training, Welcome Nursing Home appreciated more help in caring for residents, and residents were able to form bonds with passionate students,” said Green.

This partnership serves as an example of the many career-related opportunities 鶹Ƶ provides. Peters initiated the partnership in close alignment with 鶹Ƶ College’s tradition of labor and learning. “鶹Ƶ students provided hands-on support to enrich their own knowledge but also brightened the lives of local community members.”

Several of the students have followed through on the opportunity to keep working at the facility after their Winter Term experience was completed. In the future, the Pre-Medicine and Health Careers Program and the Career Development Center will continue to cultivate opportunities that support the goals of students interested in healthcare while working to forge strong connections with the 鶹Ƶ community.

News Story

Wed, 05/11/2022 - 12:00

Ava Miller ’25

Pre-Medicine

Winter Term

Career Exploration & Development

Maureen Peters

Pre-Medicine and Health Careers

Off

false

Clarissa Heart '20

Wed, 11 May 2022 14:08:20 +0000 swargo 410516 at Riley Davis '22 Receives Fulbright to Argentina /news/riley-davis-22-receives-fulbright-argentina Riley Davis '22 Receives Fulbright to Argentina anagy Thu, 05/05/2022 - 12:02

Riley Davis will graduate this spring with a strong foundation in teaching English to non-native speakers, as well as a keen awareness of her position in doing global work, as she prepares for an eight-month Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Argentina.

Davis has left no time to spare throughout her undergraduate career in 鶹Ƶ. She has double majors in Hispanic studies and Latin American studies with minors in anthropology and gender, feminist, and sexuality studies. In addition to her coursework, Davis has taught Spanish lessons to local youth through the Spanish in the Elementary Schools program; co-taught a course on the United States citizenship exam through her involvement with the El Centro Volunteer Initiative; and served as a teaching assistant for a handful of lower and upper level Hispanic studies courses.

Through her work with El Centro, Davis also volunteers to teach English to a local family on Sundays. She has taken classes in language pedagogy, introduction to linguistics, and advanced linguistic anthropology, all of which have affirmed and encouraged her passion for language and language-learning.

“I feel like this is the right next step after 鶹Ƶ,” says Davis, a resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. “After being a student for so many years, I’m looking forward to being able to share my knowledge and to be a resource for those whom I can support.”

The Fulbright program begins in March 2023 and will last for eight months. Davis has studied abroad in Latin America twice—first during a 2019 Winter Term group trip to Guadalajara, followed by a Winter Term trip in 2020 called Amazon Learning, in which she lived with an indigenous community in Ecuador for several weeks.

“In both experiences, I grew extremely close with my families and I enjoyed learning most about their lives and relationships,” Davis says. “I’m excited to see how the culture of Argentina compares and contrasts with the countries in Latin America I am more familiar with. I’m curious to see how the country’s history of European immigration has shaped the art, architecture, and language of Argentina, as well as how these influences interact with indigenous communities, and to explore how cross-cultural interactions have shaped the different provinces of the country. Of course, I’m also looking forward to interacting with the students and faculty wherever I’ll be teaching.”

Davis recently completed her honors thesis in Hispanic studies.
