As a Bonner Scholar, Tasso volunteered with the 鶹Ƶ City School District through the America Reads/Counts Program, tutoring students in grades K–9 in math. She also worked with the El Centro Volunteer Initiative, which connects 鶹Ƶ students, faculty, and community members with Latine residents in Lorain County through community engagement and educational outreach.

Tasso later continued her commitment to service through a winter term micro-internship in the U.S. Congress, where she advocated for Somali refugees in Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District. Another winter term micro-internship took her to Medellín, Colombia, where she studied peace processes and justice through sustainability initiatives.

Wanting to dive deeper into her coursework on the experiences of Afro-Latine women in higher education, Tasso applied to the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program. Mellon Mays fellows receive two years of close mentorship to pursue research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Tasso’s project focuses on raising awareness and education about the Afro-Peruvian community.

Through her combined coursework, service, and research, Tasso has grown to understand the value of co-curricular experiences as she prepares for a life and career in community stewardship. “While having access to knowledge on a wide variety of topics is enriching, being able to apply them in a tangible way allows me to see the impact of a well-rounded education,” she says. “My time at 鶹Ƶ and my engagement with different CELA offices have also made me realize that theory without application does nothing, but action without information can harm the people you are working with.

“The opportunities I have gotten through CELA have allowed me to see the real-world applications of theories I’ve learned in various classes,” she adds. “These experiences not only allow me to build upon and improve my skills, but also to contribute meaningfully to the organizations that I am a part of.”

After 鶹Ƶ, Tasso, who has a double major in law and society and Hispanic studies, plans to pursue a PhD and continue engaging with social issues as both an academic and a public servant.

Tasso is a nominee for the CELA Award, recognizing outstanding engagement and achievement in connecting academic pursuits with experiential learning.

Blending community-based service, international experiential learning, and Mellon Mays research, Aina Tasso ’27 is building a future rooted in scholarship and community engagement.

News Story

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 12:00

By Kate Martin ’26

Engaged Liberal Arts

Bonner Center

Winter Term

Study Away

Undergraduate Research

Law and Society

鶹Ƶ

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97

0
Mon, 23 Mar 2026 16:52:57 +0000 kviancou 773262 at Connecting Hawaiian Identity and Global Advocacy /news/connecting-hawaiian-identity-and-global-advocacy Connecting Hawaiian Identity and Global Advocacy kviancou Mon, 03/23/2026 - 11:39

Through her work with 鶹Ƶ's Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA), Isabel Handa ’26 has bridged her Hawaiian identity with her academic and research pursuits.

Handa began her undergraduate research journey after being awarded a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF). She later applied to the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF), proposing research centering around Asian and Asian American asexualities. The fellowship provides selected students with two years of mentored research experience in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

As a Mellon Mays Fellow, Liu participated in the 鶹Ƶ Summer Research Institute (OSRI), where she spent the summer on campus working intensively on her project. “OSRI’s programming guided me as I undertook research for the first time,” she says. “By the end of the program, I felt a significant growth in my writing and presentation skills.”

With support from 鶹Ƶ’s Study Away office, Liu spent her spring 2025 semester in Amsterdam. There, she expanded her research by conducting interviews with asexual East Asian Dutch people. “Something that shocked me during my time abroad was the unique ways in which East Asian Dutch people were marginalized as perceived foreigners to a much greater extent than in the U.S.,” she says.

Liu also utilized funding from Career Exploration and Development’s Internship+ program, which allowed her to participate in the University of Chicago’s Summer Research Training Program. Additional support from the Jerome Davis Research Award helped fund her compensation and other expenses.

After 鶹Ƶ, Liu hopes to pursue a PhD in sociology to continue her research and teach at a university. “CELA’s support and resources have greatly guided me and shaped my undergraduate trajectory,” she says. “Without CELA’s guidance, I would have never realized that I wanted to pursue a career in academia.”

Liu is a nominee for the CELA Award, recognizing outstanding engagement and achievement in connecting academic pursuits with experiential learning.

Through Mellon Mays research, global study, and funded summer programs, Katelyn Liu ’26 is connecting sociology and identity.

News Story

Sun, 03/22/2026 - 12:00

By Kate Martin ’26

Engaged Liberal Arts

Undergraduate Research

Study Away

Sociology

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97

0
Mon, 23 Mar 2026 17:52:57 +0000 kviancou 773268 at 鶹Ƶ's Center for Engaged Liberal Arts Extends Learning Beyond the Classroom /news/oberlins-center-engaged-liberal-arts-extends-learning-beyond-classroom 鶹Ƶ's Center for Engaged Liberal Arts Extends Learning Beyond the Classroom anagy Fri, 11/18/2022 - 15:54

鶹Ƶ’s new Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) officially opened in Mudd Center in fall 2022, seamlessly connecting a range of experiential learning areas. CELA’s mission is to empower 鶹Ƶ students to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom that enrich and complement their academic pursuits and position them to launch into meaningful post-graduate life.

The center, located on the garden level of Mudd, encompasses Academic Peer Advising; the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research; Career Exploration and Development, Digital Portfolio Program, Entrepreneurship, Fellowships and Awards, Study Away, Undergraduate Research, and Winter Term. Through individual mentoring, peer advising, and collaborative programming, CELA staff make visible a wide array of experiential learning options—from a Winter Term micro-internship to funded summer research.

In addition to bringing awareness to myriad co-curricular opportunities, CELA helps students plan ahead, seize opportunities, craft their educational narratives, and tell their stories to audiences within and beyond the college. Taking a developmental approach, CELA organizes programs into a framework of “explore, experience, launch” to guide students through initial exploration, transformative experiences, and professional pursuits.

CELA’s emphasis on collaboration and commitment to framing a cohesive educational narrative for students is also critical to the success of 鶹Ƶ’s signature programming for each class year. The blueprint for connected learning begins with incoming students’ experiences in a Peer Advising Leaders cohort and the closely aligned First-Year Seminar Program, which introduces students to liberal arts learning. The Sophomore Opportunities and Academic Resources (SOAR) program guides second-years through the process of declaring a major and crafting an academic and cocurricular plan. The Junior Practicum focuses on career exploration and putting skills into practice.

David Kamitsuka, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, articulates the philosophy of engaged liberal arts as an extension of the classical liberal arts model, attuned to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

“Classical liberal arts provide intellectual breadth and depth in the richness of humanistic, scientific and artistic inquiry, awakening students to the excitement of lifelong learning. An engaged liberal arts education draws on the dynamism of intellectual inquiry and puts it in the service of addressing the major challenges of contemporary life,” says Kamitsuka. “Through a model of education that helps students move between the theoretical and the applied, the classroom and real-world settings, engaged liberal arts helps students acquire the judgment, wisdom, practical skills, and sense of purpose essential for Obies to lead in our complex world.”

CELA's location in Mudd Center symbolizes this union of theory and practice, says Laura Baudot, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Terrell Main Library houses a rich history of knowledge; CELA grounds this knowledge, helping students to put rich tradition in dialogue with practice and to reflect on the complex relationship between learning and doing.”

News Story

Fri, 11/18/2022 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Academics & Research

College of Arts and Sciences

Bonner Center

Study Away

Winter Term

Career Exploration & Development

Undergraduate Research

Engaged Liberal Arts

A conference room in the new Center for Engaged Liberal Arts.

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones '97

Fri, 18 Nov 2022 20:54:04 +0000 anagy 450661 at Riley Davis '22 Receives Fulbright to Argentina /news/riley-davis-22-receives-fulbright-argentina Riley Davis '22 Receives Fulbright to Argentina anagy Thu, 05/05/2022 - 12:02

Riley Davis will graduate this spring with a strong foundation in teaching English to non-native speakers, as well as a keen awareness of her position in doing global work, as she prepares for an eight-month Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Argentina.

Davis has left no time to spare throughout her undergraduate career in 鶹Ƶ. She has double majors in Hispanic studies and Latin American studies with minors in anthropology and gender, feminist, and sexuality studies. In addition to her coursework, Davis has taught Spanish lessons to local youth through the Spanish in the Elementary Schools program; co-taught a course on the United States citizenship exam through her involvement with the El Centro Volunteer Initiative; and served as a teaching assistant for a handful of lower and upper level Hispanic studies courses.

Through her work with El Centro, Davis also volunteers to teach English to a local family on Sundays. She has taken classes in language pedagogy, introduction to linguistics, and advanced linguistic anthropology, all of which have affirmed and encouraged her passion for language and language-learning.

“I feel like this is the right next step after 鶹Ƶ,” says Davis, a resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. “After being a student for so many years, I’m looking forward to being able to share my knowledge and to be a resource for those whom I can support.”

The Fulbright program begins in March 2023 and will last for eight months. Davis has studied abroad in Latin America twice—first during a 2019 Winter Term group trip to Guadalajara, followed by a Winter Term trip in 2020 called Amazon Learning, in which she lived with an indigenous community in Ecuador for several weeks.

“In both experiences, I grew extremely close with my families and I enjoyed learning most about their lives and relationships,” Davis says. “I’m excited to see how the culture of Argentina compares and contrasts with the countries in Latin America I am more familiar with. I’m curious to see how the country’s history of European immigration has shaped the art, architecture, and language of Argentina, as well as how these influences interact with indigenous communities, and to explore how cross-cultural interactions have shaped the different provinces of the country. The Newman Civic Engagement Fellowship and Harry S. Truman Scholarship followed several months later. In addition to $30,000 for graduate school, Truman Scholars participate in several programs, including a leadership week, three-month summer institute in Washington D.C., and other programs that support Truman scholars throughout their public service careers.

Immediately after graduating from 鶹Ƶ in June, Phillips will participate in the SEO Law Fellowship, the only program of its kind that places talented, underrepresented incoming law students in top law firms around the nation before they begin law school.

“I am so excited for a summer of exploring my interests and gaining valuable legal experience that will prepare me for my legal career,” says Phillips. “I aspire to use my legal education to fight to end generational incarceration, prevent family separation, and give children a chance to live outside of the criminal legal system. I hope to work as a criminal defense attorney and eventually shift to impact litigation.”

Service to others is essential in Phillips’ career goals and personal philosophy. She is a member of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Committee, and has been involved with the Bonner Center since her first year at 鶹Ƶ, serving as an associate at the Writing Center and Speaking Center, and was a writing tutor at 鶹Ƶ High School, among other campus involvements. In her junior year, she volunteered at juvenile detention facilities throughout Ohio with Writers In Residence (WIR). This work, she explains, “is very important because it uplifts the often ignored voices of the youth in these facilities. Workshops allow them to reflect on their lives and tell their stories. These workshops also restore their humanity because these children are often disregarded in society and treated without basic respect, but this work forces others to see them as people, as children. To see that they deserve gentleness and kindness.”

Phillips is currently studying peace, justice, and community engagement in a study away program that is traveling throughout Central America. The experience is allowing her “to learn from those typically left out of academia like Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, and poor communities,” she says. “We are typically based in a large city, but we take excursions to Indigenous communities and to rural communities to learn about social change and those most oppressed by their governments.”

News Story

Mon, 04/25/2022 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

After earning full scholarships to nearly every law school she applied to, Iesha-LaShay Phillips ’22 has decided to pursue a fully funded law degree at Yale Law School in the fall.

Awards and Honors

Student Organizations

Study Away

Community Service

Engaged Liberal Arts

Africana Studies

Law and Society

Africana Studies

Law and Society

Iesha-LaShay Phillips.

Off

false

Jonathan Clark '25

Mon, 25 Apr 2022 17:19:59 +0000 ygay 409066 at 鶹Ƶ Students Engage in Experiential Learning at Sea /news/oberlin-students-engage-experiential-learning-sea 鶹Ƶ Students Engage in Experiential Learning at Sea eulrich Mon, 06/24/2019 - 11:05

Students enrolled in SEA Semester programs study ocean-related themes within the broader context of humans’ impact on the natural world.

This past spring semester, Mechteld (Mecky) Kuijpers ’20 conducted research aboard the SSV Robert C. Seamans, a 134-foot Pacific research brigantine. Through SEA Semester: Oceans and Climate, Kuijpers and a group of students from the United States and international colleges and universities sailed from New Zealand to Tahiti over the course of six weeks.

Throughout the semester, students explored the oceans’ role in climate change and conducted hands-on research, which included performing daily hydrocasts by taking water samples from 1,200 meters below the ocean’s surface.

Students enrolled in SEA Semester programs spend the first portion of their semesters at SEA’s campus in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. There, SEA students take courses that prepare them for what they will be studying more in-depth at sea. For instance, Kuijpers studied how Pacific Island nations are affected by climate change and how policies are designed to alleviate these risks.

A neuroscience major, Kuijpers says her experience influenced the way she thinks not just about climate change, but about scientific research more broadly. “I know that the experience I had with SEA will contribute to my life no matter where my studies take me,” she says. “Whether through adapting to a crazy sleep and work schedule, working on boats, engineering, or oceanic studies, I know that what SEA taught me will influence my future career for the better.”

<img alt="Two people sitting sitting on the mast of a boat. Through SEA Semester: Colonization to Conservation in the Caribbean, Sheehan spent six weeks sailing throughout the Caribbean and studying its environment, culture, and history. Students met with local experts, completed field-based research, and visited the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of Silver Bank in the Dominican Republic to study whale and marine mammal behavior.

During the six-week preparatory period at Woods Hole, Sheehan and his peers visited Brown University’s John Carter Brown Library and the University of Chicago’s Marine Biological Laboratory Library to examine archives from past Caribbean voyages.

“Being able to see other cultures firsthand was a terrific experience,” Sheehan says. “We were able to visit communities that were pretty far off the beaten path for foreign tourism. Visiting the tomb of Nanny of the Maroons, who is officially designated as a national hero of Jamaica, was particularly interesting.”

Sheehan says his experience with SEA Semester piqued his interest in maritime history, which he hopes to study more in depth as a graduate student.

Because SEA Semester programs are intended to immerse students in critical interdisciplinary thinking, 鶹Ƶ students apply with they learn in the field to their diverse academic interests. Fellows participate in intensive four-week educational programs located in cities across Europe and the United States, with approximately 20 local and international students in each program. Each program provides a site-specific curriculum for understanding the historical and cultural context in which challenges to pluralism and liberal democracy occur.

Cavert says his experience helping asylum applicants with The Advocates for Human Rights, a nonprofit legal office, inspired him to apply to for the HIA fellowship.

“I heard the testimony of immigrants whose lives had been upended by violence, abuse, and trauma. Those intense conversations taught me the importance of creating opportunities for international discussions with diverse groups about the impact of discriminatory policies and political violence,” says Cavert, a Hispanic studies and economics major from Minneapolis. “That lesson was reinforced serving in the Office of Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress. The vitriol and verbal degradations our office received cemented in my mind the need for spaces to cultivate intercultural understanding and cross-cultural dialogue.”

Cavert is especially excited to study and immerse himself in the culture of Amsterdam.

“The importance of climate change for a country that sits below sea level will also allow me to delve into issues surrounding sustainability and environmental justice from a new perspective,” he says.

After the four-week on-site educational programs, fellows return to their home countries to develop and implement action projects to address social justice issues in their own communities.

“After my fellowship finishes, I hope to implement a project influenced by environmental initiatives in the Netherlands. My interests include public transportation, sustainable trade, and agricultural policy.”

Cavert says living and working abroad has been an integral aspect of his educational experience and is something he plans to continue after 鶹Ƶ. He took a gap year after high school and traveled throughout the United States and Europe as a member of Servas International. “In that capacity, I was able to stay in the homes of fellow members who, like me, were dedicated to cultivating world peace and cross-cultural diplomacy through cultural exchange.”

On campus, Cavert is a sustainability liaison for Student Senate and is a member of the Faculty Committee on Environmental Sustainability, the Green EDGE Fund, and the Carbon Neutrality Student Advisory Board. He also hosts a WOBC radio show/podcast about local and international news and teaches in the Spanish in the Elementary Schools program.

Cavert says he intends to pursue a career in public policy, law, or economics. Heck is among nearly 500 students chosen from a pool of more than 5,000 applicants in the United States. Through a highly competitive process, scholars are nominated by academic institutions to compete for funding to help cover the costs of their undergraduate tuition and room and board. Juniors who are awarded a Goldwater Scholarship will receive up to $7,500 their senior year.

Heck has collaborated with Assistant Professor of Mathematics Ben Linowitz to study arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and she will continue that line of research for her senior honors project. In summer 2018, she conducted research in hyperbolic geometry, specifically about fundamental domains of hyperbolic 3 manifolds, a project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) at the University of California, Berkeley. She wrote a paper about her findings that is currently under review for publication.

This summer, Heck is slated to study algebraic combinatorics in another NSF-funded project with a faculty member at the University of Michigan.

At 鶹Ƶ, Heck is a member of the varsity women’s tennis team and a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. She also works as an OWLS tutor and grader for a variety of math and physics classes.

Heck says she intends to apply for a Fulbright scholarship to spend a year in Hungary after graduation. She is also considering applications for the Marshall and National Science Foundation scholarships.

“My goal is to pursue a PhD in math and continue to do research as a professor at a major research university,” Heck says. “I hope that having won the Goldwater, I will be more competitive for these awards and programs.”

News Story

Wed, 05/22/2019 - 12:00

Amanda Nagy

Awards and Honors

Academics & Research

Undergraduate Research

Study Away

Benjamin Linowitz

Mathematics

Physics and Astronomy

Rainie Heck, a third-year mathematics and physics double major, is a recipient of the 2019 Goldwater Scholarship.

Off

false

Courtesy of Rainie Heck

Tue, 21 May 2019 19:01:09 +0000 anagy 167371 at
