A political science major with an integrative concentration in education studies, Silverman applies the critical thinking and problem-solving skills she honed at 鶹Ƶ to her work as a global markets senior analyst. She recently shared how her background in political theory shaped her career path in finance and contributed to her early success in a competitive field.

How has your political science degree contributed to your work at Goldman Sachs?

Although my role at Goldman Sachs differs from my political science major, my education from 鶹Ƶ has been invaluable. The diverse curriculum, extending beyond politics to the core subjects, taught me to efficiently learn and adapt to new challenges. This skill set has been crucial at Goldman, where I regularly encounter unfamiliar problems. Unrelated to my politics degree, my experience dissecting a rat in Biology 101 prepared me not to fear any challenge—even in the finance world.

Can you share how your extracurricular activities at 鶹Ƶ impacted your professional development?

My time in Harkness co-op was instrumental in preparing me for Goldman Sachs. As a head cook for two years, I developed skills in multitasking, working under pressure, and leading a team. The culture of debate in the co-op’s governance taught me to confidently advocate for my ideas. I am truly grateful for this experience, as it significantly contributed to my career success.

What advice would you give 鶹Ƶ students looking to enter competitive fields?

Make sure you leverage 鶹Ƶ’s unique qualities, such as its passionate professors and quirky clubs, to make your job applications stand out. Building relationships with professors in your major is key. Take their classes, participate in the classroom, and go to office hours. 鶹Ƶ’s small community allows for these meaningful connections, which can be pivotal in obtaining strong references and recommendations. Also, don't hesitate to reach out to alumni in your desired field. Most are more than willing to help with the application process.

Were there any mentors at 鶹Ƶ who were crucial to your professional growth?

Eve Sandberg, my foreign policy professor, gave really great insights in her class as to what the expectations and realities are of working in fast-paced, high-stakes foreign policy fields. I found her advice to be transferable to my career now. My professor Joshua Freedman helped me build confidence in my abilities when I was in his seminar and worked as his research assistant. There are too many others to name, but all my professors have had an impact on my growth in one way or another.

What is your fondest memory from your time at 鶹Ƶ?

My fondest memory is of taking a samba class during a summer semester. When the weather was nice, we went out to dance in Tappan Square! It was not just a class, but a place where I formed lasting friendships and also gained an appreciation for 鶹Ƶ’s beauty in the summer. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.

Global Market Senior Analyst Anna Silverman ’22 Shares How 鶹Ƶ Helped Shape Her Career Path

News Story

Thu, 05/16/2024 - 12:00

Communications Staff

After 鶹Ƶ

Co-op

Student Organizations

Biology

Financial Economics

Dance

Politics

Joshua Freedman

Biology

Financial Economics

Dance

Politics

Anna Silverman

Off

false

Courtesy of Silverman

Thu, 16 May 2024 19:37:29 +0000 ygay 472127 at Darielle Kennedy ’22 Enters Public Affairs Arena with Coro Fellowship /news/darielle-kennedy-22-enters-public-affairs-arena-coro-fellowship Darielle Kennedy ’22 Enters Public Affairs Arena with Coro Fellowship anagy Wed, 06/08/2022 - 13:27

Law and justice scholar Darielle Kennedy ’22 has landed her first post-graduate position in public affairs through the highly selective Coro Fellowship program.

As a member of the 2022-23 cohort in New York City, Kennedy will engage in public affairs work with the goal of amplifying and embedding the issue of mass incarceration into public discourse.

“I applied to other fellowships that declined to endorse a candidate who wanted to take on this issue because it is too controversial for their organization, even though they assert in their mission statements that they aim to create social change. However, the Coro Fellowship embraced me and my collective and personal struggle with the criminal legal system and my passion to abolish it,” says Kennedy, a comparative American studies major with a concentration in identity and diversity, as well as a minor in law and society.

A native of the south side of Chicago, Kennedy enrolled at 鶹Ƶ as a Posse Scholar. Using the city as a classroom, Coro Fellows learn through interactions with private, public, and nonprofit decision-makers and work as a group to develop critical thinking, analytical, governance, and leadership skills.

Kennedy says her coursework and leadership in 鶹Ƶ Student Senate has prepared her for her career journey.

“My experience as president of the Student Senate has helped to cultivate my public service skills. I served as a liaison between senior administration and the student body, and helped create platforms and workshops that aimed to help embrace, uplift, and protect equity, diversity, and inclusion on campus.”

In addition to serving as student senate president, Kennedy is a former racial equity liaison on student senate. The Newman Civic Engagement Fellowship and Harry S. Truman Scholarship followed several months later. In addition to $30,000 for graduate school, Truman Scholars participate in several programs, including a leadership week, three-month summer institute in Washington D.C., and other programs that support Truman scholars throughout their public service careers.

Immediately after graduating from 鶹Ƶ in June, Phillips will participate in the SEO Law Fellowship, the only program of its kind that places talented, underrepresented incoming law students in top law firms around the nation before they begin law school.

“I am so excited for a summer of exploring my interests and gaining valuable legal experience that will prepare me for my legal career,” says Phillips. “I aspire to use my legal education to fight to end generational incarceration, prevent family separation, and give children a chance to live outside of the criminal legal system. I hope to work as a criminal defense attorney and eventually shift to impact litigation.”

Service to others is essential in Phillips’ career goals and personal philosophy. She is a member of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Committee, and has been involved with the Bonner Center since her first year at 鶹Ƶ, serving as an associate at the Writing Center and Speaking Center, and was a writing tutor at 鶹Ƶ High School, among other campus involvements. In her junior year, she volunteered at juvenile detention facilities throughout Ohio with Writers In Residence (WIR). This work, she explains, “is very important because it uplifts the often ignored voices of the youth in these facilities. Workshops allow them to reflect on their lives and tell their stories. These workshops also restore their humanity because these children are often disregarded in society and treated without basic respect, but this work forces others to see them as people, as children. To see that they deserve gentleness and kindness.”

Phillips is currently studying peace, justice, and community engagement in a study away program that is traveling throughout Central America. The experience is allowing her “to learn from those typically left out of academia like Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, and poor communities,” she says. “We are typically based in a large city, but we take excursions to Indigenous communities and to rural communities to learn about social change and those most oppressed by their governments.”

News Story

Mon, 04/25/2022 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

After earning full scholarships to nearly every law school she applied to, Iesha-LaShay Phillips ’22 has decided to pursue a fully funded law degree at Yale Law School in the fall.

Awards and Honors

Student Organizations

Study Away

Community Service

Engaged Liberal Arts

Africana Studies

Law and Society

Africana Studies

Law and Society

Iesha-LaShay Phillips.

Off

false

Jonathan Clark '25

Mon, 25 Apr 2022 17:19:59 +0000 ygay 409066 at 2021: A Year in Photos /news/2021-year-photos 2021: A Year in Photos ygay Mon, 01/31/2022 - 12:01

2020 brought about many changes for schools across the country as COVID-19 gripped the nation. After January 20, I look forward to doing whatever I can to help the president-elect deliver on his promises to the American people.

Were you always interested in a career in politics?

Originally, I thought I wanted to be a judge, but I’m not sure I have the patience or temperament to pursue a life on the bench. Next, I wanted to be a writer, since words have always been the best way for me to understand others and bring to life those experiences and emotions that we often keep private but are in fact shared. I’ve always felt very different from others because of my background. Feeling like I can see and am seen by other people almost feels like being in on an inside secret. Midway through high school, I found politics to be a space to more intimately explore those human connections and tie them to processes and outcomes that make a real impact on people’s lives. I’m obsessed with the idea that where we come from shouldn’t define where we can go and have found politics and policy to be an effective space to make that a reality.

Were you involved in any student organizations at 鶹Ƶ?

Yes. The most impactful for me were the Student Senate and the varsity baseball team. In senate, I had the chance to lead an incredibly politically diverse group of students and learn a lot about advocacy and coalition-building. Being a part of both groups forced me to organize my time and get more out of everything I did in the classroom. I was also involved with the Bonner Center and served as a teaching assistant for courses in the politics and environmental studies departments.

Who were your mentors at 鶹Ƶ, and how did they influence you?

[Emeritus] Professor Paul Dawson as well as Professor [of Politics] Michael Parkin and [Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies] Swapna Pathak always had an open door to talk not just about coursework, but the work that I was doing on the Student Senate and more broadly on campus. I also learned a lot from then-President Marvin Krislov and deans Eric Estes and Kathryn Stuart about how to lead in incredibly difficult circumstances. Nick Petzak from the Fellowships and Awards Office was and remains a good personal friend.

Did you perform any internships?

My freshman year, I spent winter term with the office of then-Congressman John Lewis. That summer, I was also back in Atlanta doing public policy research at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. For my sophomore winter term, I interned with the Environmental Defense Fund. That summer, I participated in the politics department’s Cole Scholars program, which funded me to intern on a U.S. Senate campaign in Georgia and take a couple of seminar courses on political campaigns. My junior winter term was spent in Atlanta’s Office of Sustainability, where I helped with the city’s work on cutting building emissions. That summer, I interned at the White House, working on the Obama Administration’s Clean Energy Plan. 鶹Ƶ supported and funded me through all of these experiences and I will always be extremely grateful.

You were a very accomplished student, winning a Harry S. Truman Scholarship in 2014 and a Rhodes Scholarship in your senior year. How did these accomplishments help shape your career path?

I learned a lot about America’s place in the world and how we’re perceived by the international community, which gave me a perspective on my current work that would have been missing entirely otherwise.

What are your future career goals?

I anticipate working in the federal government for a few years to help us deliver on our campaign promises. I hope to stay involved in politics and advocacy but am considering a number of directions that look a little different from presidential politics. I would love to find a way to formally incorporate writing into my life. Through the campaign, I also gained a lot of insight into the private sector in meeting public goals and would be interested in working on clean energy development. I also want to play a role in getting more diverse, young people into elected office, particularly from the Asian American community. One thing I’ve learned so far is that things rarely go the way you plan, so I’m keeping an open mind.

What are your fond 鶹Ƶ memories?

I used to drive up to Lake Erie in the winter and walk along the incredibly beautiful frozen beach. I also spent a lot of time at the Feve with friends and maintained a streak of going to the Mandarin nearly every Sunday afternoon with my baseball teammates. Over time it’s mostly been the friendships that I made at 鶹Ƶ that have stuck with me the most.

Any advice for students?

鶹Ƶ has an incredible array of resources available to its students, from incredibly kind and knowledgeable professors to funding from various offices to help students have professional experiences. My advice is to try and take advantage of as much as possible! I miss having those resources available to me and am glad that I kept a busy schedule to be involved in as much as I could. Once you graduate, the luxury of free time to read, write, think, and grow becomes very valuable, so don’t be afraid to lose an hour of sleep and go to that lecture or concert or pursue that research project that you’ve always had in mind. For people that want to go into politics in particular, take advantage of winter term and your summers to intern at a variety of places to see where you might have a real interest in going afterward.

News Story

Tue, 12/08/2020 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

When he was growing up, Machmud Makhmudov ’15 noticed how communities from different parts of the world created lives that struggled, grew, and thrived alongside one another. Although their senior year on campus was cut short due to COVID-19, they created a space where Black athletes could talk about the challenges they face within their sport, advocate for action against inequality, and foster support for Black students in athletics, as well as the overall well-being of 鶹Ƶ’s Black community.

‘‘It’s really important that Black people can have a space where they can celebrate themselves and have community, but also talk about their issues, advocate for themselves, and be supported and heard,’’ says Djungu-Sungu, a member of the women’s track and field team majoring in economics and Africana studies.

Asare, a biology major and member of the men’s track and field team , says the events over the summer heightened the need for the group to elevate its presence on campus.

‘‘We approached this semester as an opportunity to step outside the box,’’ Asare says. ‘‘We had to consider the areas we felt were most necessary. We thought about the different Black alumni who used to be student-athletes. Part of the community building aspect comes from networking. We wanted to bridge the gap between former and current Black student-athletes.’’

On a Thursday evening in October, the group coordinated a virtual panel discussion with 10 Black alumni who shared their experiences about being a student-athlete at 鶹Ƶ, how they navigated the campus and their team dynamics, and what they’re doing after 鶹Ƶ.

Giving Black athletes an opportunity to see other people who look like them is high on the BSAG‘s agenda.

The group meets with the athletics department’s diversity and equity working group monthly to discuss ways to catalyze effective allyship among non-Black players and make the department more inclusive of Black voices and perspectives. They‘re also working with coaches to help recruit more Black student-athletes. To this end, they‘ve hosted panel discussions with recruits ’’to let them know there is a group for them when they get here, so they know 鶹Ƶ is a place where they can thrive and be heard,’’ says Djungu-Sungu.

Another key initiative the group developed this fall is a peer-to-peer mentorship program with Black student-athletes in 鶹Ƶ High School.

‘‘The idea is that we will be matched one-on-one to guide OHS students in their journey to college, also talking about their experience being Black and being advocates for themselves,’’ Djungu-Sungu says. ‘‘We’ve already had conversations with the high school’s Black Student Union about ways we can learn from each other.’’

Chris Donaldson, assistant dean and director of Student Academic Success Programs, is advising the BSAG and helping to engage the group with Black alumni.

‘‘Some of the most important influences on athletes of all ages come from those individuals who can share similar experiences and connect on familiar themes,’’ says Donaldson, an 鶹Ƶ graduate and two-sport athlete in baseball and football. ‘‘I’m honored to be working with them, and I fully embrace their mission.’’

Although there’s no competition at the moment, Asare and Djungu-Sungu have both discovered some bright spots.

‘‘This semester has shown me how to be a better teammate,,’’ Asare says. ‘‘In the flow of the season, you’re preoccupied and worried about a track meet; you’re worried about a conference meet and wanting to win. To have that all stripped away, my priorities changed. Now, I need to find ways to be a better teammate from afar. I need to reach out to the first-years and let them know I‘m around. I‘m making sure I connect with the fourth-years and find out what they plan to do after they graduate.’’

Djungu-Sungu says the track and field team feels more like family.

‘‘We know we can’t look forward to that big conference meet or the smaller meets each Saturday, but we’re still practicing and moving as if we are competing. The program launched in summer 2020 and will continue into the winter and spring.

“It was very successful. We’ve been talking a lot about the importance of building community resilience, not only environmentally speaking, but in this age of the pandemic and thinking about ways we can support the 鶹Ƶ community,” said Scholl.

Supporting the 鶹Ƶ community is what the GEF does best. Projects vary in size and scale, from smaller endeavors such as public composting bins to larger tasks such as retrofitting new lighting systems for buildings, the current undertaking of Stephan Ciulla ’21, the GEF’s Office of Sustainability liaison.

With the help of a fund set aside for efficiency loans, Ciulla is working to ensure the installation of LED bulbs and modernizing the lighting controls throughout the 鶹Ƶ College Science Center, which he says accounts for 3 percent of the total amount of energy the town uses. When the retrofit is complete, the funding provided for the project will come back to the GEF through the savings the college realizes in its electricity use and will then be used to support future projects. Other buildings that benefit from energy-efficient retrofits include Mary Church Terrell Library and Stevenson Hall.

No matter the size of the project, the GEF’s main goal is the betterment of both the college and the town in tandem. For example, the Environmental Dashboard monitor, display, and educational programming provides an inside look into 鶹Ƶ’s collective efforts toward carbon neutrality, and the GEF recently funded monitors for 鶹Ƶ’s newest public school. GEF also secured funding for bike fix-it stations outside the local middle and high schools.

For Ciulla, these projects lie at the core of the town-college connection. “At the end of the day, it’s a really symbiotic relationship we have with the town, and providing our resources and making 鶹Ƶ College’s resources available to the public further strengthens that relationship into one that improves and builds upon social equity,” he said.

Social equity is a founding principle of sustainability. For the GEF board, sustainability takes on social, economic, and environmental forms, but always comes down to the “equitable access of resources,” according to Ciulla. “We ask how we can distribute resources to make sure that everyone has a fair chance in our community,” he said.

Scholl emphasized that anyone can partake in the efforts toward a greener future.

“We want to debunk the idea that sustainability is elite and posh and something that only certain people can achieve if they pay a lot of money and buy certain environmentally-friendly products,” she said. “It’s a community-driven system. Things like community gardens, growing your own food, or biking when you don’t have a car are sustainability at its core. It’s about meeting people where they’re at.”

News Story

Fri, 11/13/2020 - 12:00

Kyra McConnell ’22

Environment & Sustainability

Community

Community Service

Student Organizations

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Environmental Studies and Science

Green Edge Fund board members gather in the atrium of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies.

Off

false

Courtesy of Green Edge Fund

Thu, 12 Nov 2020 21:57:19 +0000 swargo 312786 at Twine, a Student Life App, Announces Launch /news/twine-student-life-app-announces-launch Twine, a Student Life App, Announces Launch anagy Thu, 10/01/2020 - 15:53

Twine, a student-created app designed to increase access to events, student life, and organizations on campus, launches today.

The app was developed by T. The team was awarded $15,000 to continue the development of its personalized mobile app.

Potter, a double-degree student majoring in oboe performance and computer science, is one of the founders and the chief project manager. He explains that he created Twine as a way to bring cohesion to the various ways events and student clubs are marketed, including the 鶹Ƶ events calendar, club fairs, and postering on campus. The pandemic has created new challenges for connecting students to virtual events, particularly first-years who may not be aware of the 鶹Ƶ events calendar.

Potter says academic departments will also benefit from wider exposure to the events they sponsor.

The app provides a personalized experience for users. Students will have access to all the clubs and organizations on campus. If you miss out on an event like the Club Fair or the Ex-Co Fair, the app provides a second course of action to get involved. What seemed like a threat to the active and engaged environments of 鶹Ƶ’s student clubs and organizations has turned out to be, for many, a way of developing leadership skills and remaining connected despite the unforeseen circumstances.

As part of an effort to engage with prospective students and the Class of 2024, many clubs have created remote videos, giving a look into their missions, events, and members, and conducted meetings via Zoom. Still more have continued to tackle environmental issues, be a voice as the student government, and publish student journalism.

鶹Ƶ Student Senate

The 鶹Ƶ Student Senate, the central governance organization representing the student body, has been holding its weekly meetings open to the student body via Zoom and working on multiple projects since remote learning began.

In an email, Senate Communications Director Ilana Foggle ’21 says that Student Senate’s “number-one priority has been finding ways that we can best support students during this really challenging and unprecedented time.”

To accomplish this, according to Foggle, Student Senate has worked with the college's Educational Plans and Policies Committee and the conservatory's Educational Policy Committee to create policy recommendations for faculty regarding academic support for students, and made efforts to ensure the safety and security of students still on campus.

“All of our worlds have truly been flipped upside down, some more than others,” says Foggle, who also praises the work of her fellow Student Senators. “Student Senate is here to make sure that despite all of the craziness throughout the country, world, and in our own lives, student voices will always be represented and heard at 鶹Ƶ.”

Two Groves Review

Two Groves Review, 鶹Ƶ’s online journal for student poetry, literary criticism, fiction, and other forms of “writing about writing,” has been holding Zoom meetings weekly with its board members and is working on the upcoming publication of its fourth issue. Members have been receiving writing submissions from students and transitioned to a remote editorial process.

Two Groves board member Miranda Purcell ’20 explained how the role of student publications as an accessible entryway for writers to share their ideas and discoveries with a wider audience lends itself well to remote learning.

“It’s important to have a space for people to submit their writing about crisis in times of crisis so that their work is heard,” says Purcell. She also notes that her personal experience as a writer, that of working towards a tangible goal, has inspired her as a board member of Two Groves.

According to Purcell, Two Groves is an ideal “space for both writers and editors to work collaboratively towards a goal and a finished product.”

International Student Organization

鶹Ƶ’s International Student Organization (ISO) has been meeting via Zoom and brainstorming ways to welcome the Class of 2024.

ISO Chair Ryo Adachi ’22 calls regular meetings “a bit of a challenge” considering ISO membership spans the globe, but the group has managed to maintain a sense of community, also with the help of their faculty advisor, Josh Whitson.

ISO collaborated with 鶹Ƶ’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program to host a movie night, and members have also been in contact with international students from the Class of 2024, who are uncertain as to the details of their arrival to 鶹Ƶ in the future. Adachi and others served on an international student panel and attended virtual hangouts for admitted students.

Adachi has enjoyed remote ISO meetings—which she calls “low-stress”—because she feels connected despite vast geographical distances. “We were laughing all the time,” says Adachi, who also sees meetings as an opportunity to learn how COVID-19 has affected different parts of the world.

“It’s nice that we got to connect even though we’re in different parts of the world, because we also got to know how different countries are doing things differently.”

Sunrise 鶹Ƶ

The 鶹Ƶ College and Community chapter of the national Sunrise Movement has been actively working for the past two months to combat climate change, fight for worker justice, and raise awareness about environmental issues remotely.

According to Communications Director Rachel Serna-Brown ’22, “it took some time to adjust,” but Sunrise 鶹Ƶ quickly got to work on organizing Zoom events for Earth Week in April, hosting teach-in information sessions. One session, titled “The Green Noodle,” provided a space to discuss the Green New Deal, and another session focused on the mission of People’s Bailout and COVID-19 relief plans.

Bookkeeper Anna Silverman ’22 describes the transition to remote meetings as an opportunity to develop event-planning and organizational skills to build a sense of community within Sunrise remotely, especially during the summer. “We didn’t stop now, so we don’t ever need to stop,” said Silverman.

Both Serna-Brown and Silverman discuss why it is important for groups that support environmental causes, such as Sunrise 鶹Ƶ, to remain engaged during a time of crisis.

“Environmentalism is always the thing that gets pushed back, and it disappears from peoples’ minds,” says Silverman, “and even with COVID relief packages, it’s still relevant to environmentalism.”

Serna-Brown emphasizes the importance of togetherness in the group: “Even though we all are from such different parts of the country, it’s still important to have some kind of involvement [in order to] mobilize within the 鶹Ƶ community” from a distance.

News Story

Fri, 05/08/2020 - 12:00

Kyra McConnell ’22

Student Organizations

Student Life

Students

International Students

Environment & Sustainability

A walkout for climate justice was organized by the 鶹Ƶ Sunrise movement in September 2019.

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones

View a Flickr gallery of 鶹Ƶ's student clubs and organizations.

Fri, 08 May 2020 16:48:47 +0000 anagy 246741 at
