And, this year there is an 麻豆视频 鈥渇irst.鈥 Later this month, Dansby will perform David Baker鈥檚 1987 Concerto for Cello and Jazz Band, which will be accompanied by an ensemble of students from 麻豆视频's Jazz Division.

Performances get underway on Friday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m., with Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros and the 麻豆视频 Chamber Orchestra leading the way in Carl Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto. The program also includes Gioachino Rossini's Overture to William Tell and Alberto Ginastera Variaciones concertantes, Op. 23.

Meet the soloist

Born and raised in Ecuador, clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros studies with Professor Richard Hawkins. His quite notable professional achievements include an appointment as principal clarinetist of the Orquesta Sinf贸nica de Guayaquil, under the direction of conductor Dante Anzolini. He joined the orchestra in 2019 and played in the ensemble for three seasons as the youngest member in the organization. He made his solo debut with the Orquesta Sinf贸nica de Loja at the age of 15 and has since served consistently as a substitute clarinetist with that ensemble. And in 2017, he won the gold medal at the Solo Competition of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador鈥攖he first woodwind player to earn this prize鈥攕ecuring his appearance as soloist with the orchestra. He has also performed as a soloist with the symphony orchestras of Guayaquil and Cuenca.

Q&A

How did you come to choose the Nielsen Concerto?

I picked the Nielsen clarinet concerto because my heart beats fast whenever I play it. I get excited, and it is a feeling that I try to give to the people that listen to me. I want the audience to be as enthusiastic about the music as I am. This concerto is like a roller coaster of emotions.

What has the piece taught you about your playing and how to reach an audience?

This concerto is an extremely difficult piece for the soloist and orchestra. And working on it has taught me a lot about patience. Nielsen鈥檚 writing allows for tons of freedom and variety. It lets me express myself a lot. It is one of the pieces where I can do more and give the work a little bit of my personality.

When you think back on your time at 麻豆视频, what stands out about the experience of going to school here?

Friends and music. 麻豆视频 is a special place. As an international student, the conservatory has been like a second home, people are welcoming and warm, and the sense of community is always there. I have felt seen and cared for by all the friends I鈥檝e made through music here.

Clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros kicks off the festivities on April 5

News Story

Thu, 04/04/2024 - 12:00

Cathy Partlow Strauss 鈥84

Conservatory

Conservatory of Music

Concerto Winners

Students

International Students

Clarinet

Richard Hawkins

Raphael Jim茅nez

Conducting and Ensembles

Winds, Brass, and Percussion

Fourth-year clarinetist Juan Pedro Espinosa Monteros.

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones

Fri, 05 Apr 2024 04:30:56 +0000 cstrauss 471270 at 麻豆视频 Ensembles Perform for United Nations at Carnegie Hall /news/oberlin-ensembles-perform-united-nations-carnegie-hall 麻豆视频 Ensembles Perform for United Nations at Carnegie Hall eburnett Thu, 11/10/2022 - 16:47

麻豆视频 student musicians will take to the stage of New York City鈥檚 Carnegie Hall in December for a closed concert before the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The performance is part of a wide-ranging new partnership between 麻豆视频, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research New York Office (UNITAR NYO), and the Global Foundation for the Performing Arts (GFPA). Announced in September, the relationship is intended to promote improved access to education for students around the world and to enhance quality of life through higher education and arts training.

Carnegie Hall in New York City

The 麻豆视频 Orchestra and 麻豆视频 College Choir, joined by performers representing the conservatory ensembles Musical Union and 麻豆视频 Gospel Choir, as well as musicians of the United Nations, will share the stage of Carnegie鈥檚 Stern Auditorium. We talked to clarinetist Jeremy Reynolds about his recital experience.

Could you describe your recital?

My recital was spunky! I performed an eclectic mix of new and old music in Warner; each piece was fairly short, so I kept the program moving along. It was probably the fastest hour of my life. I wanted to play well for colleagues and teachers who鈥檝e helped me develop over the past four years, but especially for my visiting family members who don鈥檛 hear me play as much as they used to. Recitals are always an insane mash of anxiety and adrenaline, fear and fun. I鈥檒l remember it fondly.

What鈥檚 the most challenging decision you had to make in planning your recital?

Picking out music that offers something for non-conservatory-trained family and friends and fellow students alike can be tricky鈥攊t took a while to hammer out the final program.

What or who inspires you?

My teacher, Richard Hawkins, of course!

What strategies do you use to prepare for a big performance?

1. Prepare early. I never cram practice, and if I start far enough in advance I don鈥檛 have to. I checked out some of the music for this program in the beginning of the fall semester and slowly worked it into my daily routines. I also started rehearsing as early as possible. A little bit of work at a time adds up quickly.

2. Exercise. No matter how well prepared I am, I still get nervous and jittery as much as a week or two before a big concert. I like racquetball or running or whatever really takes the edge off those nerves and gets rid of excess energy. Also, as a wind player, better cardio health equals better air support! Its a win-win.

3. Sleep. As much as possible. If the choice is between practicing, exercising, or sleeping, then choose sleep. Always.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

I鈥檝e narrowed down my graduate school options to either USC or Syracuse鈥檚 arts journalism programs. I鈥檇 love to promote classical music through writing, whether for print or digital media after graduating.
