Some of the most formative and salient classes included Borderlands with Pablo Mitchell; Constructing Immigrant Communities with Rich Baldoz; Politics of Oil with Amanda Zadorian; and Indigenous Activism, Environmental Justice, and the State with my wonderful advisor, Jess Arnett.

Additionally, I participated in the SIT/IHP Health and Community in Vietnam, South Africa, and Argentina program. Danielle Abdon was especially instrumental with reading my essays, answering last minute-panicked questions, and helping me prepare for my interview. 鶹Ƶ has such a robust system of support to help as many students as possible succeed with post-college fellowships and programs, it’s no wonder that each year we rank as a top producer of Fulbright scholars.

How does pursuing the Fulbright align with your post-college life and career goals?

I am really interested in pursuing public health, psychology, or policy advocacy, with a focus on the Latin American refugee and immigrant population in the U.S. Some time down the line from this Fulbright, I hope to pursue a master’s degree in refugee and migration studies, public health, or social work. Completing a Fulbright will help me expand my cultural literacy of this region, my Spanish comprehension, and my ability to use cross-cultural collaboration as a means to address global issues of migration and resource access. And it’s also offering me a wonderful opportunity to consider if teaching, NGO work, public health, and Hispanic studies are areas I will pursue for my career. I’m looking forward to using language lessons to forge personal connections with my students.”

How did 鶹Ƶ influence you to pursue the Fulbright?
It was a culmination of many factors. I began taking classes in Spanish during my first year. I ended up not only loving the language learning process in college, but also the 鶹Ƶ department as a whole, as I had met so many awesome professors who wanted to support my growth. (Special shoutout to Patty Tovar and Ana María Díaz Burgos!) Spanish just happened to become really important to my academic trajectory and personal growth.

While I have had extensive experience working with kids, I went abroad to Argentina during the spring semester of last year and took a philosophy seminar at the local university, where we facilitated philosophy lessons with students at a local elementary school. This seminar reconfigured how I thought about teaching, and motivated me to pursue it even further once I returned to 鶹Ƶ.

Over this past year, I have worked closely alongside Kim Faber. Her Language Pedagogy class continued to pique my interest in teaching, and additionally introduced me to language education, a field of study that I had not previously engaged in. Volunteering through the Spanish in the Elementary Schools (SITES) program, and working as her teaching assistant and writing tutor for her Spanish 101 and 102 students, gave me diverse opportunities to hone my language teaching capacities. I have come to deeply care about language education and accessibility of learning materials, which has motivated me to pursue a Fulbright ETA. I feel very fortunate to have had a really strong academic support network to get me here.

How does pursuing the Fulbright align with your post-college life and career goals? While I really value language pedagogy and seek to improve how I engage with language teaching, I still face a lot of unknowns about how an ETA Fulbright will contribute to my personal career trajectory. Operated by the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research and supported by the national Bonner Foundation, the scholars program provides four-year community service scholarships to approximately 60 鶹Ƶ students who are the first in their families to attend college or come from underrepresented populations. Bonner Scholars participate in intensive, developmental community-engagement experiences throughout their time at 鶹Ƶ.

Each year, approximately 15 incoming first-year students are selected as Bonner Scholars. Their experience is guided by designated student leaders, who lead community projects and engage with the entire campus community about service opportunities. Fourth-year Bonner leader Ari Leandry majors in comparative American studies with minors in history and gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, and an integrative concentration in journalism. Her previous Bonner work has revolved around NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio—a reflection of her deep passion for reproductive justice and mutual aid. A native of nearby Lorain, Ohio, Leandry finds herself serving the very community in which she was raised.

We asked Leandry about her life as a Bonner Scholar.

Can you describe the Bonner Scholar Program to someone who is unfamiliar?

The Bonner Scholar Program provides an outlet for students passionate about social justice and service to further engage with their greater college community. Bonner enables these students to build connections that will help them personally and professionally.

How has your service corresponded to social issues you care about?

I was always interested in engaging with reproductive justice efforts, but I did not know how to pursue this interest. Through Bonner, I had support to seek out opportunities to work with reproductive justice organizations in Ohio and understand how I can turn this passion into an actual career. I was able to explore my interest in reproductive justice and grassroots activism. I built connections in my field that I otherwise would not have found if it weren't for Bonner's encouragement of exploring academic and personal interests through service. I appreciate the diversity of service opportunities that Bonner provides, and I feel fortunate to have been able to connect with reproductive justice advocates in Ohio and build a greater personal network in this issue area.

How has your Bonner experience influenced your time at 鶹Ƶ?

Bonner allowed me to build strong relationships and connections with other students who shared my passion for community service and social justice. Through Bonner, I was able to participate in meaningful and impactful service projects, which not only contributed to the community but also allowed me to develop my skills in leadership and teamwork.

What have you learned about the 鶹Ƶ community through your service?

One of the things that I have learned is the extent to which social justice and equity are at the forefront of people's minds. I have also learned about the importance of collaboration and partnership in addressing community needs.

What is unique to you about the Bonner Scholar Program?

What makes Bonner unique is the tight-knit community that accompanies it. The support and guidance of the Bonner staff and my fellow Bonner Scholars helped me navigate the challenges of college life and find a sense of belonging on campus. They provided me with resources, advice, and encouragement that allowed me to thrive academically and personally.

Share a fond Bonner memory!

I loved getting to connect more deeply with my fellow Bonner Scholars at our Fall Bonner Retreat in 2021!

Dedication to reproductive rights fuels the service of Bonner Leader Ari Leandry.

News Story

Fri, 05/05/2023 - 12:00

Tyler Applegate

Bonner Center

Community Service

Comparative American Studies

History

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Journalism

Comparative American Studies

History

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Journalism

Off

false

courtesy of Ari Leandry

Fri, 05 May 2023 17:14:08 +0000 tapplega 457263 at Getting Organized /news/getting-organized Getting Organized anagy Thu, 03/23/2023 - 11:32

Henry Hicks IV graduated from 鶹Ƶ in 2021 with a double major in comparative American studies and creative writing. His passions for grassroots organizing and advocacy have paid dividends: During his fourth year, Hicks was awarded the prestigious Truman Scholarship, which recognizes extraordinary dedication to public service. After graduating, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he works at Nonprofit Quarterly—a new position that follows an administrative stint at AmeriCorps.

You are a former chair of the 鶹Ƶ Student Senate. How did that experience cultivate your interest in leadership?

I had a really unique experience on the student senate. I stepped into the role of chair at the onset of the pandemic, when there was a huge surge in racial justice protests. Issues on campus were directly tied to problems in communities across the country. There was definitely a heightened sense of urgency. I had a great experience developing as a leader. Since student senators are voting members of general faculty, there’s a lot of opportunity for growth. During this time, our work became less about programming and more focused on policy on educational accessibility. How can we think more intentionally about those who identify as BIPOC? Issues became more nuanced, a lot deeper, and prompted thinking about national identity. These discussions gave me a unique perspective entering rooms after 鶹Ƶ. I could say that I had done work building bridges in 鶹Ƶ and was able to say that I organized students remotely.

You took a personal leave in fall 2019 to work as a field organizer for Kamala Harris in Iowa. How did this experience give you an understanding of grassroots organizing and campaigning?

If anyone is considering taking personal leave to work on a campaign, I absolutely recommend it. It was my first time in this type of environment, and it was like doing a study away program. I was organizing between Black Hawk County and Bremer County. I got to see different ways of organizing. I volunteered, phone-banked, and always asked, “How can I get people involved?” It was important to tailor messages to different community members. That primary cycle was unique because there were 20 different campaigns happening. I got to see how other campaigns were working. It was very interesting.

You cite many mentors at 鶹Ƶ, including entire departments—comparative American studies, Africana studies, creative writing—as well as President Carmen Twillie Ambar and professor Wendy Kozol. How did they influence your career?

The really big lesson I took away was that they encouraged me to move in different directions at one time. I had professors encourage me to work on Kamala Harris’ campaign. Creative writing professors encouraged me to write about my experiences. I received guidance from the Africana Studies Department on how to unpack my time in Iowa.

As a Truman Scholar, you had the opportunity to participate in the Truman-Albright Program after graduation. What was that like?

The Truman-Albright Program is for Truman Scholars who are living in Washington, D.C., but haven’t gone to grad school yet. I had a really great time meeting other Truman Scholars. I was able to connect with them and ask for advice. Similar to PAL [鶹Ƶ’s Peer Advising Leaders], I was part of a cohort, and it was really nice to have that network.

What did your position as assistant to the board of directors at AmeriCorps entail?

This was an appointed role in the Biden-Harris administration, working with the board of directors to advance the mission of the administration. A board member at 鶹Ƶ referred me to this position. I was responsible for staffing people, putting together briefing materials, and communications. It’s really a mix of different tasks. I worked with people on the CEO’s team in order to integrate the board into the agency's board.

What are you on to now?

I found a new job at Nonprofit Quarterly. I work on content that will be in print and online. Nonprofit Quarterly has undergone a transition and is emphasizing community organizing more, and my role will focus on projects related to this transition.

What are your longer-term career goals?

I definitely see myself still organizing and writing. My honors thesis at 鶹Ƶ was about the Deep South and a political organizing tactic called “relational organizing.” It centered around building social movements and stronger change. In the future, I see myself having an impact at home in the South.

From presidential campaigns to grassroots initiatives, Henry Hicks IV thrives on community building.

News Story

Thu, 03/23/2023 - 12:00

Ava Miller '25

After 鶹Ƶ

Creative Writing

Comparative American Studies

Africana Studies

Comparative American Studies

Creative Writing

Africana Studies

Henry Hicks '21

Off

false

Courtesy of Henry Hicks

Thu, 23 Mar 2023 15:32:20 +0000 anagy 453736 at Darielle Kennedy ’22 Enters Public Affairs Arena with Coro Fellowship /news/darielle-kennedy-22-enters-public-affairs-arena-coro-fellowship Darielle Kennedy ’22 Enters Public Affairs Arena with Coro Fellowship anagy Wed, 06/08/2022 - 13:27

Law and justice scholar Darielle Kennedy ’22 has landed her first post-graduate position in public affairs through the highly selective Coro Fellowship program.

As a member of the 2022-23 cohort in New York City, Kennedy will engage in public affairs work with the goal of amplifying and embedding the issue of mass incarceration into public discourse.

“I applied to other fellowships that declined to endorse a candidate who wanted to take on this issue because it is too controversial for their organization, even though they assert in their mission statements that they aim to create social change.
