Operated by the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research and supported by the national Bonner Foundation, the scholars program provides four-year community service scholarships to approximately 60 鶹Ƶ students who are the first in their families to attend college or come from underrepresented populations. Bonner Scholars participate in intensive, developmental community-engagement experiences throughout their time at 鶹Ƶ.

Each year, approximately 15 incoming first-year students are selected as Bonner Scholars. Their experience is guided by designated student leaders, who lead community projects and engage with the entire campus community about service opportunities. Fourth-year Bonner leader Ari Leandry majors in comparative American studies with minors in history and gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, and an integrative concentration in journalism. Her previous Bonner work has revolved around NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio—a reflection of her deep passion for reproductive justice and mutual aid. A native of nearby Lorain, Ohio, Leandry finds herself serving the very community in which she was raised.

We asked Leandry about her life as a Bonner Scholar.

Can you describe the Bonner Scholar Program to someone who is unfamiliar?

The Bonner Scholar Program provides an outlet for students passionate about social justice and service to further engage with their greater college community. Bonner enables these students to build connections that will help them personally and professionally.

How has your service corresponded to social issues you care about?

I was always interested in engaging with reproductive justice efforts, but I did not know how to pursue this interest. Through Bonner, I had support to seek out opportunities to work with reproductive justice organizations in Ohio and understand how I can turn this passion into an actual career. I was able to explore my interest in reproductive justice and grassroots activism. I built connections in my field that I otherwise would not have found if it weren't for Bonner's encouragement of exploring academic and personal interests through service. I appreciate the diversity of service opportunities that Bonner provides, and I feel fortunate to have been able to connect with reproductive justice advocates in Ohio and build a greater personal network in this issue area.

How has your Bonner experience influenced your time at 鶹Ƶ?

Bonner allowed me to build strong relationships and connections with other students who shared my passion for community service and social justice. Through Bonner, I was able to participate in meaningful and impactful service projects, which not only contributed to the community but also allowed me to develop my skills in leadership and teamwork.

What have you learned about the 鶹Ƶ community through your service?

One of the things that I have learned is the extent to which social justice and equity are at the forefront of people's minds. I have also learned about the importance of collaboration and partnership in addressing community needs.

What is unique to you about the Bonner Scholar Program?

What makes Bonner unique is the tight-knit community that accompanies it. The support and guidance of the Bonner staff and my fellow Bonner Scholars helped me navigate the challenges of college life and find a sense of belonging on campus. They provided me with resources, advice, and encouragement that allowed me to thrive academically and personally.

Share a fond Bonner memory!

I loved getting to connect more deeply with my fellow Bonner Scholars at our Fall Bonner Retreat in 2021!

Dedication to reproductive rights fuels the service of Bonner Leader Ari Leandry.

News Story

Fri, 05/05/2023 - 12:00

Tyler Applegate

Bonner Center

Community Service

Comparative American Studies

History

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Journalism

Comparative American Studies

History

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Journalism

Off

false

courtesy of Ari Leandry

Fri, 05 May 2023 17:14:08 +0000 tapplega 457263 at Criminal Justice Reporter to Foreign Correspondent: Leila Miller ’16 /news/criminal-justice-reporter-foreign-correspondent-leila-miller-16 Criminal Justice Reporter to Foreign Correspondent: Leila Miller ’16 swargo Mon, 11/22/2021 - 11:53

Tell us about your new position with the LA Times?

I'm a foreign correspondent for the LA Times. I’m based in Mexico City, but I cover the entirety of Latin America. My job is to write enterprise stories, basically taking a few days, weeks or even months sometimes, to hone in on important stories from the region, whether it’s human rights issues, social issues, cultural issues, or anything that deserves more attention and readers in LA will really care about. That's my new job, and I’m super excited about it. I never thought that I would be a foreign correspondent after three years of working at the Times, but it's something that I've always wanted to do. My mom's family is from Argentina, so I have that connection to Latin America, and I think it’s a region that needs a lot of coverage.

What was your position at the LA Times prior to becoming a foreign correspondent?

I was a criminal justice reporter—part of a team of six reporters. I was a general assignment reporter on that beat, which means I didn't cover any institution in particular. I found my own stories relating to criminal justice, and many of the stories that I've written have involved some kind of accountability component. For example, I’ve written stories about concerns that people have with the prison system, the Sheriff's department, or with the LAPD.

What types of stories did you work on as a criminal justice reporter?

I worked on one story where I spoke to family members of people who were in prisons in California, and they were telling me that they were not being notified that their loved one was being hospitalized with COVID-19. In some cases, families did not find out until days later that their loved ones had been hospitalized for COVID treatment. Some people believe that being in touch and getting encouragement from your family if you're sick with COVID can make a difference. My story featured a prisoner who died from COVID, and how his family was not told about his illness until he had been put on a respirator.

Another impactful story I wrote was about gender identity issues in the California prison system, and how hundreds of inmates have been asking the prisons to transfer them to either a men's facility or a woman's facility under a new law that allows prisoners to be housed based on gender identity. I wrote about the issues of being transgender in prison and how the prison system was dealing with so many requests to transfer.

How has your 鶹Ƶ experience impacted your career?

鶹Ƶ has been super important for my career. I think one of the most amazing parts of my time at 鶹Ƶ was the Kosher Halal Co-op. I spent four years in that co-op, and I thought it was a really cool place because it broke down barriers. I wouldn't have called it a political space by any means. It was just a space where people from different cultures could come together and make meals and get to know each other. I met my best friends in that co-op. I'm Jewish, I come from a modern Orthodox family, and my best friends were Muslim girls—one from Iraq and the other from Pakistan. I met them there and we're still super close today. As a journalist, you meet different kinds of people, and you need to know how to be sensitive when immersing yourself in different cultures. And I think my experience at the co-op gave me a great base for that.

News Story

Mon, 11/22/2021 - 12:00

Jane Hobson '22

Hispanic studies and politics major Leila Miller ’16 recently transitioned from criminal justice reporter to foreign correspondent at the Los Angeles Times. This eventually led her to enroll in Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. After graduating from Columbia, Miller had an internship at the LA Times, followed by a year-long fellowship at PBS’s “Frontline.” She ultimately made her way back to the LA Times for a two-year fellowship in 2018.

After 鶹Ƶ

Engaged Liberal Arts

Politics

鶹Ƶ

Journalism

Politics

鶹Ƶ

Journalism

Off

false

Ricardo DeAratanha, Los Angeles Times

Mon, 22 Nov 2021 16:53:36 +0000 swargo 382101 at The Hectic and Gratifying Life of a CNN Producer /news/hectic-and-gratifying-life-cnn-producer The Hectic and Gratifying Life of a CNN Producer ygay Wed, 03/17/2021 - 15:06

Matthew Kendrick’s passion for shooting and editing video led to a position as an associate producer with CNN political commentator Fareed Zakaria. Today, he reflects on his experiences and offers advice to students who have hopes of working in the broadcast journalism industry.

The job of a major network host can appear effortless. That’s because behind each segment there’s a lot going on—deadlines, research, pre-interviews, fact-checking, finding appropriate visual material. The long hours and constant grind isn't for everyone. Kendrick ’14 saw it as an amazing opportunity.

On the job at CNN. [Something] that took me out into the wider world in a way academics or think-tanks wouldn’t. I got extremely lucky to find such a good fit at the right time in my life,” says Kendrick of his position at CNN, even though the road to the broadcast journalism industry wasn’t exactly a straight path.

Kendrick, a history and East Asian studies major, went to South Korea on a Fulbright scholarship to teach English in several rural elementary schools after graduating from 鶹Ƶ. He intended to pursue an academic career, but his attention turned to video after meeting British documentarians working in Seoul. After enrolling in a master’s program in history and documentary film at Syracuse University, Kendrick fell in love with shooting and editing video. He applied for documentary and news production internships in New York City, and landed a position as an intern at CNN and worked his way up to production assistant to booker to associate producer of the Fareed Zakaria GPS, a weekly foreign affairs program.

“Three extremely talented and experienced producers at CNN—Dana Sherne, Jessica Gutteridge, and Nida Najar—took me under their wings early on,” says Kendrick about his on- the-job education. “They taught me everything I know about organizing and executing edits that are informative, compelling, and beautiful all at once. Having a keen eye for the right visuals and the patience and perseverance to find that perfect shot or make that graphic just a little bit better can be the difference between a segment viewer’s flip away from [the program] and one that they seek out online to retweet.

On location with CNN. Photo credit: Kendrick

“In the same vein, I learned so much from my mentors about writing clearly and concisely, how to fastidiously fact-check oneself and one’s colleagues, and how a cooperative can-do attitude elevates any piece beyond what could be produced on one’s own. Which gets to a more fundamental lesson for every journalist about listening more than one speaks and seeking to understand before seeking to be understood.”

A typical week for Kendrick involved spending hours widely reading to generate pitches for guests and segment topics for the upcoming show. He liked to focus on East Asia, since his language skills gave him an advantage in scouring Chinese and Korean outlets for good stories. Kendrick, who was raised in Chile, had developed an interest in foreign affairs journalism when he was younger. He honed his Mandarin and Spanish language skills at 鶹Ƶ and gained Korean language skills after graduation.

Once a rough outline for the week’s program was generated, writing and production tasks were divided. For interviews he produced, Kendrick would call potential guests and conduct a pre-interview—a longer, more detailed conversation that he can draw on to help the host craft the most germane interview possible on air.

For segments that were delivered by the host straight to camera, Kendrick worked with CNN’s reporters in the field and topic experts for facts, working through several drafts of each piece. All of the pieces at GPS went through a peer-led fact-checking system, where his work was reviewed and critiqued by other producers and production assistants and vice versa, Kendrick explains. The final stop was CNN’s “row,” a group of senior network editors who signed off on all copy before it went on air.

During the process, Kendrick also worked with a production assistant to locate and license the visual material necessary to tell each story, which he considered the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of the job. Taping usually began Thursday morning, when Kendrick was responsible for managing the recording system and guiding the host through interviews or reads he produced. Afterward, each segment was rushed into editing, where he “worked like mad” through the end of the next day to stitch everything together and get it down to time. But even then, breaking news often required producers to come into the office Sunday morning for a live segment or two, says Kendrick. The grueling scheduling made rare moments of social impact all the sweeter.

Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State, with Kendrick. Courtesy of Matthew Kendrick

“It didn’t happen every day or every month, or even every year, but when you got that story you’ve been fired up about through the gatekeeping hurdles—through a rigorous fact-check, a crazy edit, and just over the finish line to air—and you generated some discussion and got people’s minds moving, and maybe, just maybe, contributed to some concrete action that could actually make a difference in the lives of your subjects or audience, I was tempted to feel like what I did for a living might actually matter in the high-brow, philosophical sense that Obies tend to care about, and that’s pretty great.”

After four years with CNN, Kendrick decided to step back late last year to support his partner, Nina Axiotakis ’14, during her medical residency at Georgetown University. In the future he would like to continue working in foreign affairs, “but with a more granular focus on human rights. My work on North Korea, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong over the last few years was particularly impactful, and I hope to elevate and center the stories and voices of victims of state violence and genocide in my future work.”

Kendrick says he is grateful to each of his 鶹Ƶ mentors for their patience and guidance, some of whom are reflected in his career: Associate Professor of History Ellen Wurtzel, who mentored him throughout his time at 鶹Ƶ; Professor of East Asian Studies Sheila Miyoshi Jager, who changed the way he viewed American foreign policy in East Asia and set him on the path to live in South Korea; Professor of History Renee Romano, who pushed students to improve their communication skills; and Senior Lecturers in Chinese Kai Li and Fang Liu, who provided “a world-class Mandarin education,” and introduced him to Chinese calligraphy and classical literature that continue to enrich his life.

For students who are seeking a career in on-screen journalism, he offers this advice:

“The thing I wish I had brought more of to the table is simple production experience. Brush up on your skills in Premiere or Pro Tools and use winter term to report and record a short documentary or podcast about something that means a lot to you,” he says. “Prove that you’re an enterprising and creative journalist and you see through what you start. 鶹Ƶ for internships at publications and productions that you admire, and work as hard as you can to learn what gives them that special touch. Make mentorship connections. I don’t like the term networking because I feel it implies a shallowness and transaction-oriented nature to the relationship. What I have found works best in the industry are relationships based on mutual trust and appreciation.

“For foreign affairs in particular, I can’t recommend learning another language enough. 鶹Ƶ’s Mandarin classes are particularly good. And find a way to spend a year or more in a country that speaks your target language by hook or by crook. If you can do some reporting in-country, all the better. And practice, practice, practice. She was awarded high honors in English and was a John F. 鶹Ƶ Scholar. For the past two years she has worked in New York as assistant to the creative director for Vanity Fair, a monthly magazine that features popular culture, fashion, and current affairs.

Read more about Goode in this After 鶹Ƶ Q&A.

What were your internships or projects during winter term? I had several internships over winter term. I worked for the Laura Dail Literary Agency and POV | American Documentary, and completed the Student Docent Program at the Allen Memorial Art Museum.

Did you have mentors at 鶹Ƶ? [Visiting Donald R. Longman Emerita Professor of English] Sandy Zagarell was my advisor and an incredible mentor to me. I am so indebted to her for the support she gave me as both a student and a human being. In addition to helping me become a better reader, writer, and thinker, she looked out for me and helped me through many trips and falls of my college career. I will always be grateful to Sandy for her endless patience, guidance, and for helping me shape my senior thesis, something I’m still really proud of.

What does your job entail? As the assistant to the creative director, I help everyone in the art department—creative director, design director, and art directors—with both administrative and creative tasks. Generally, I spend my days working on editorial layouts, commissioning and art directing illustrators for columns, and designing Instagram stories for Vanity Fair’s feed. I’ve also had the opportunity to contribute to some really special photoshoots and issues, such as our Hollywood 2020 portfolio and our September 2020 issue, which was guest-edited by [New York Times best-selling author] Ta-Nehisi Coates. A dream came true last year when a concept I pitched—a photo portfolio of TikTok stars who were breaking into the mainstream—was developed and produced. I also write about podcasts for VF.com when I have time.

Have you experienced any challenges at Vanity Fair that you would like to share? I don’t have formal training in graphic design. I’ve been designing as a hobby since I was in high school, and worked as a student graphic designer at 鶹Ƶ—my former boss, Emily Crawford ’92, is actually my colleague at VF, now—I’m completely self-taught. On the one hand, I feel lucky to have gotten a design job without a BFA, but sometimes my lack of a formal foundation can feel frustrating.

Has the pandemic greatly affected how you do your job? Yes. Creating a print magazine is such an incredibly collaborative and hands-on process; it was difficult to adjust to doing everything over Slack, and still feels difficult sometimes, even though we transitioned to [working from home] almost a full year ago. I really miss the camaraderie of the office. It feels like creative ideas spring up way more naturally when you’re talking and pitching things to people in person, as opposed to over Zoom.

What are your long-term career goals? To be completely honest, I’m still figuring that out. At this point, as long as I’m able to make a living in a creative field, I would consider that a success.

Any advice for students who wish to seek a job in the creative side of journalism? I am very open about the fact that I got this job through the Columbia Publishing Course, a six-week professional development program offered every summer through Columbia University. I attended the course in 2018 and although it didn’t happen immediately, it led me to my current position. I would encourage students to look into similar programs and also take advantage of resources like Study Hall, a social network for freelancers that offers tons of advice on pitching, leads on jobs, and more. Also, talk to me. I’m happy to help in whatever way I can.

News Story

Thu, 03/04/2021 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Justine Goode ’16 has always wanted to work at a print magazine in either a design or an editorial capacity. of all this, she was a triple major in politics, law and society, and philosophy with a concentration in cognitive science. Now, she is working toward a master’s in journalism at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

What are you currently doing at Columbia?

I would say that what I do is more like an internship in that I spend much more time in the field than in the classroom. The majority of what I do is reporting. The school tries to give students experience in a little bit of everything, so I do video, audio, breaking news, photography, narrative pieces, features, and data reporting. Currently, I am taking City Newsroom, a course in which I produce a weekly video or print story in addition to covering breaking news whenever it may happen. I am also taking education data reporting and am embedded in an elementary school in Brownsville, Brooklyn. My main priority right now is my master’s thesis, which is a long-form investigative piece looking into benzodiazepine overdoses on Staten Island.

How has your experience at Columbia Journalism School been so far?

It is certainly stressful at times, but my ability to research, to interview, and to provide context for stories has improved astronomically. At Columbia, they do not let you stay in your comfort zone. I have learned all sorts of new styles of journalism, and I surprised myself with what projects I enjoy working on. I have a better understanding of what I want to do, but there is always a sense of uneasiness when I try something I am not used to.

How did your time on The 鶹Ƶ Review and other extracurriculars prepare you for journalism school?

Working as a news editor at the 鶹Ƶ Review was definitely applicable to what I do now—I got to pitch and write my own stories as well as learn how to work collaboratively in a high-paced newsroom. Being on the field hockey team taught me the importance of finding a community and working together to support one another. I also was in OSCA, on the Honor Committee, and a member of the fencing team. All of these experiences made me a kinder, more compassionate, and an overall better person. I could not imagine my college experience without extracurricular activities, and the ways they added to my life are innumerable.

Do you have any advice for students interested in a similar career path?

I would advise people looking to follow a similar career path to be curious and to flex their reporting muscles. If you see something interesting, look into it. I would say to talk to as many people as you can, wherever you are. Ask them what they think needs to be talked about. Let people surprise you!

On a more practical level, internships are helpful for gaining experience and credentials. Keep in mind, however, that diverse backgrounds are necessary for journalism. Do not think that you have to limit yourself to journalism experience exclusively. Knowledge of other industries or intimate understanding of different communities is valuable and needed. One of my recent breakthrough moments was that I realized I had to follow my instincts. What I notice—what I take away from a situation—is my biggest asset, because I know no one else will see something the same way I do.

News Story

Mon, 03/23/2020 - 12:00

Jaimie Yue '22

Jenna Gyimesi ’19 could be found everywhere on 鶹Ƶ’s campus: she was the news editor for the 鶹Ƶ Review, a varsity field hockey player, an equestrian team and a fencing team member, vice president of the class of 2019, and cochair of the Student Honor Committee.

After 鶹Ƶ

Young Alumni

Alumni

Athletics

Journalism

Law and Society

Philosophy

Politics

Cognitive Sciences

Politics

Law and Society

Philosophy

Jenna Gyimesi is a graduate student at the Columbia University School of Journalism.

Off

false

Courtesy of Jenna Gyimesi

Mon, 23 Mar 2020 13:36:50 +0000 anagy 189156 at Journalism Symposium Features Alumni Working in the Field /news/journalism-symposium-features-alumni-working-field Journalism Symposium Features Alumni Working in the Field hhempste Thu, 02/13/2020 - 16:06

The journalism symposium, A Disrupted Media Landscape: Skills, Perspectives, Solutions, will be held from February 24 to March 1 and is open to all members of the community to learn about the current state of media.

Organized by six student leaders from the 鶹Ƶ Review and the Grape, the weeklong event features daily programming that brings together a range of alumni journalists who are achieving in their respective fields. Presenters include Rani Molla ’08 and Aaron Zitner ’84, who will lead a data journalism workshop; Sonia Shah ’90 will speak about her experience as a science journalist and investigative reporter; and Anthony Arnove ’91 will discuss the world of independent publishing. Recent graduates Sophie Kemp ’18 and Lucas Fortney ’18 will share their experiences at Pitchfork, Vogue, and Eater NY.

We caught up with the six students responsible for the programming to talk about the symposium and what to expect.

Q: Why did this group want to take on organizing a journalism symposium?

A: There are so many 鶹Ƶ alumni practicing incredible, groundbreaking journalism, and we felt that we had a duty (and an opportunity) to recognize and learn from them. Many of those alumni worked for the Review or the Grape when they were students here, and many, many others had a less than linear journey, or came from an entirely different 鶹Ƶ scene. By bringing in such a diverse group of alumni journalists, the symposium hopes to represent a range of backgrounds and experiences, while still presenting a career in journalism as something attainable and broadly impactful—especially as 鶹Ƶ prepares to launch its first academic concentration in journalism in fall 2020.

Q: What can attendees expect at the symposium?

A: Our hope is that the sessions will be engaging and informative even if your previous experience with journalism is just reading a news article on Twitter every once in a while. We’ve also designed the sessions to be as hands-on as possible—we want attendees to walk away with a better understanding of the kinds of skills that will define journalism as we continue to move into the 21st century. The journalism landscape is rapidly changing, especially as attacks against the press continue to be an issue in the U.S. and around the world. We want people to gain a more clear understanding of the current state of journalism, as well as build some insight into where it’s going in the future. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with 鶹Ƶ alumni who are doing incredible work across a range of media and platforms.

Q: Why did staff from the 鶹Ƶ Review and the Grape band together to produce this?

A: When the Review and the Grape decided to become friends this year (after a long history of rivalry, we might add), we knew it was time to do something big. Both publications had dreams of putting on something like this for quite some time, but only after joining forces did the symposium seem like something we might actually be able to pull off. By pooling together our various contacts and areas of interest, we were able to compile a pretty comprehensive and impressive list of alumni journalists and presentation topics. We also felt that there was a need for student journalism to be more widely accessible on campus.

Q: How did you land on the mix of alumni who are participating?

A: We wanted to make sure that students, regardless of whether or not they are interested in journalism, could find something compelling in our programming. It would have been a shame to bring a plethora of professionals to campus, only to have just the staff members of our two publications attend. And the fact of the matter is: 鶹Ƶ alumni are working all across the spectrum. In curating the symposium lineup, we intentionally chose journalists whose areas of expertise could appeal to a variety of 鶹Ƶ students—from STEM majors to visual artists and everyone in between.

Q: What do you hope that attendees will take away from the experience?

A: We hope attendees will leave the symposium feeling inspired and informed. For those with intentions to pursue a career in journalism, we hope that the symposium will provide useful skills and knowledge for the future. For everyone (journalists and non-journalists alike), we hope the symposium will incentivize more mindful and intentional media consumption—whether that be in regard to the kinds of news outlets you subscribe to, the Twitter accounts you follow, or the ways in which you interact with data.

Q: Who should consider attending?

A: Everyone. By covering such a large array of topics (current events, arts, politics, foreign affairs), as well as a diversity of media (print, podcast, social media, etc.), we hope to attract a large and eclectic audience. Our goal is to find a way for everyone, regardless of major or personal interests, to engage with the field of journalism. Apart from being comprehensive, we also hope that the symposium will be relevant. It’s a critical time for journalism, after all. If you’ve been keeping up with any of the big media stories—the presidential primaries, the impeachment hearings, the coronavirus, the fires in Australia, the Iran saga—then you have something new to learn by attending this symposium.

News Story

Thu, 02/13/2020 - 12:00

Hillary Hempstead

Alumni journalists from a range of publications will present at “A Disrupted Media Landscape: Skills, Perspectives, Solutions,” February 24 through March 1.

Student Life

Students

Conference-Symposium

Campus Life

Academics & Research

Journalism

Pictured from left to right: Event organizers Charlie Rinehart-Jones, managing editor of the Grape, Nathan Carpenter, editor-in-chief of the 鶹Ƶ Review, Ananya Gupta, managing editor of the 鶹Ƶ Review, P.J. The concentration’s design will allow students to combine it with any of 鶹Ƶ’s more than 50 majors—whether in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, arts, or music—and merge coursework with cocurricular and extracurricular work, including internships and other forms of applied learning.

“鶹Ƶ’s educational goals read like a checklist for journalists—critical thinking, communication skills, creativity. Our ethos also helps, as Obies like to engage with the world and to question authority,” says Sebastiaan Faber, international journalist, professor and chair of 鶹Ƶ, and one of the new concentration’s primary architects.

“The creation of a journalism concentration simply establishes signposts to signal the path that many students have been finding on their own for generations, while helping to ensure that we offer consistently—and with purpose—relevant courses, invited speakers, internships, and the like.”

“I am pleased we moved so quickly towards the academic integration that the One 鶹Ƶ report recommended,” says President Carmen Twillie Ambar. “The integrative concentration in journalism is an important part of this comprehensive effort.”

鶹Ƶ has long produced outstanding journalists, defined broadly as individuals who communicate in a variety of nonfiction genres about current matters, including newspaper, magazine, and online reporting; writing and editing creative nonfiction and nonfiction books; radio production and podcasting; and documentary filmmaking.

Journalism has undergone rapid and disruptive change in recent years, creating a need for an innovative approach to prepare students for a career that remains extremely popular. 44 percent of current students expressed high interest in the idea of a journalism program at 鶹Ƶ, when surveyed last year.

“I see the new journalism concentration as an exciting opportunity to formally recognize the high level of interest that many 鶹Ƶ students have in learning the skills of the trade,” says Nathan Carpenter, a current senior and editor in chief of the 鶹Ƶ Review.

“Student journalists are on the front lines of a quickly changing field. My hope for this concentration is that it will help Obies gain the skills and experiences necessary to continue shaping journalism well into the future, as many 鶹Ƶ alumni have already done,” Carpenter says.

The new concentration will serve the career goals of students interested in a variety of forms of journalism, such as news and political reporting; investigative, music, and science journalism; literary criticism; and related communications careers.

The concentration’s developers also hope the new approach will attract more people from underrepresented minority communities who choose to enter the journalism field.

“It’s clear that the future of journalism will depend on expanding the points of view in newsrooms and editor offices–including the voices of more people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTIAQ folks,” says Jan Cooper, associate professor of rhetoric and composition and English and another architect of the new program. “I’m especially hoping that our integrative concentration in journalism will help make that happen.”

“We need smart, thoughtful, and well-trained journalists more than ever in our country,” says Jim Axelrod, chief investigative and senior national correspondent for CBS News. “As a parent of an Obie, I know firsthand how an 鶹Ƶ education helps develop both sharp minds and compassionate hearts. The new integrative concentration in journalism at 鶹Ƶ will train some terrific students for a profession that badly needs them, and the sensibilities they’ve refined on the 鶹Ƶ campus.”

The Department of Rhetoric and Composition will oversee the integrative concentration, which was designed by Professors Faber and Cooper, along with Laurie McMillin, professor of rhetoric and composition.

“At a moment when the very notion of objective facts seems in doubt—a skepticism that threatens democracy—there could be no better time for 鶹Ƶ to create a concentration in journalism,” says Tom Rosenstiel ’78, director of the American Press Institute.

”While the fundamental principles endure, we need new methodologies about how to practice this profession, which is so vital to self governing,’’ Rosenstiel says. ‘‘The world needs a new, better journalism that draws on the lessons of neuroscience, ethnography, anthropology, computer science, statistics, and new forms of visual story telling; all disciplines at which 鶹Ƶ excels. 鶹Ƶ’s distinctly rich way of teaching will help invent a new and better way of educating the next generation of journalists.”

Read about the Integrative Concentration in Journalism program

News Story

Wed, 12/18/2019 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Rare approach builds upon the college’s long history of preparing some of the world’s leading journalists.

College of Arts and Sciences

Arts & Humanities

Academics & Research

Journalism

Jan Cooper

Laurie Hovell McMillin

Sebastiaan Faber

Communication Studies

Off

false

Jeong Hyun Hwang

<img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/program/header-image/journalism-lecture.jpg?itok=x2pFb_Bc" width="760" height="507" alt="Lecture hall during a presentation.
