The students attended the conference, presented research in a plenary session, and exhibited the poster, "Environmental Justice and Local Knowledge in Africatown, Alabama.” Poster author and senior Eli Presberg was recognized with a third-place award, out of 51 submissions.&nbsp;</p> <p>Africatown, Alabama, is recognized as one of the first towns founded and led by African Americans in the United States, with some of its original residents who were among a group of <a href="https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/initiatives/africatown-alabama-usa">Africans forcibly transported</a> <span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span> to the United States aboard an illegal slave ship. Today, Africatown is also known for its reports of industrial pollution and public health problems.</p> <p>For their research, the students collaborated with the Africatown, Alabama, community and participated as interviewers, videographers, transcribers, and web designers in the development of the Africatown Digital Archive.</p> <p>“The students are models of engaged researchers, with a nuanced understanding of the ethics of community-based partnerships,” says Janet Fisko. “This project values the knowledge that community historians hold and their role as mentors of students. This was evident at the conference, where Africatown community members and 鶹Ƶ students attended and warmly supported each other's presentations.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Presberg appreciated having the opportunity to learn from those at the conference who are considered foundational figures in environmental justice.</p> <p>“As a student interested in environmental justice work, being able to learn from their wisdom, experience, and advice was excellent,” says Presberg. “Beyond this, being able to participate in the academic conference with our partners from Africatown, have them hear us present, support them in their presentation, and just learn alongside each other was an incredible and unique experience.”</p> <p>The group’s participation at the conference was supported by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the <a href="/node/25351">Environmental Studies Program</a>, the Blank fund, and a grant from the Consortium on High Achievement and Success.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-12-09T12:00:00Z">Mon, 12/09/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="text-content field field--name-field-intro-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Environmental studies students presented research, received a third-place award, and met the “father of environmental justice.”</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2410">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2358">Undergraduate Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3499">Climate Action</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25351">Environmental Studies and Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/jay-fiskio" hreflang="und">Jay Fiskio</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/environmental-studies" hreflang="und">Environmental Studies and Science</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">(From left) Robert Bullard, distinguished professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University, Santiago Roman, Eli Presberg, Beverly Wright, founder and executive director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, Imani Badillo, Zimmy Chu.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Courtesy of Janet Fiskio</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/envi-stud-award.jpg?itok=Vn792qhB" width="760" height="570" alt="students standing together, smiling at the seventh annual HBCU Climate Change Conference."> </div> Mon, 09 Dec 2019 19:57:05 +0000 hhempste 180891 at Continued Collaboration Between 鶹Ƶ, Great Lakes Science Center, on Environmental Dashboard /news/continued-collaboration-between-oberlin-great-lakes-science-center-environmental-dashboard <span>Continued Collaboration Between 鶹Ƶ, Great Lakes Science Center, on Environmental Dashboard</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-10-17T16:29:00-04:00" title="Thursday, October 17, 2019 - 16:29">Thu, 10/17/2019 - 16:29</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>In the summer of 2018, 鶹Ƶ College was <a href="/news/environmental-studies-students-key-players-cleveland-foundation-grant">awarded a $120,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation</a> to implement Environmental Dashboard technology at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) and to incorporate real-time energy usage data from the Cleveland metro region. Lewis Gateway Center has earned a LEED Platinum certification from the <a href="https://new.usgbc.org/">U.S. Green Building Council</a>, making it one of only a handful of new hotels in the country to achieve the highest standard for sustainability. LEED, or <a href="https://new.usgbc.org/leed">Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design</a>, is the most widely used green building rating system in the United States.</p> <p>Architecture firm <a href="https://www.scb.com/project/the-hotel-at-oberlin-and-peter-b-lewis-gateway-center/">SBC</a> worked with the college to create the 104,000-square-foot mixed-use center in the heart of downtown 鶹Ƶ and overlooking Tappan Square.</p> <p>The <a href="/hotel">hotel</a> features 70 guest rooms and suites, the <a href="https://thehotelatoberlin.com/1833-restaurant/about/">1833 Restaurant</a>, and 6,500-square feet of event space. The adjacent Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center is home to the College of Arts &amp; Sciences Admissions office and the <a href="/studioc">鶹Ƶ Center for Convergence</a> (StudiOC).&nbsp;</p> <p>Meghan Riesterer, assistant vice president for campus energy and sustainability, says the college understands the value and challenge of LEED.</p> <p>“Campus transformation happens one project at a time. 鶹Ƶ College has exemplified extraordinary leadership in reshaping our campus and&nbsp;visitor experience, not only in a way that informs and impacts the higher education sector but also the hotel industry,” Riesterer says. “The success in LEED Platinum is due to the partnerships, hard work, and support of those committed to advancing building practices, sustainability, and education on campus and within the community. This new LEED Platinum certification is one step closer to revolutionizing the environment in which we learn, live, play, and rest.“</p> <p>Innovative features include rainwater collection and reuse, exterior automated solar shading devices that respond to weather and sun exposure, a highly effective thermal envelope that uses rainscreen technology for long-term moisture control, and natural ventilation through automated window vents and skylights. The project also used natural, salvaged, or recycled materials wherever possible and sourced 50 percent of building materials from within 500 miles.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-05-10T12:00:00Z">Fri, 05/10/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2369">Environment &amp; Sustainability</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2559">The Hotel at 鶹Ƶ</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2561">Buildings</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2560">Gateway Center</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3499">Climate Action</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">The Hotel at 鶹Ƶ and the Peter B.
