This Week in Photos: The Mug That Keeps Giving</h1> <article> <h1>This Week in Photos: The Mug That Keeps Giving</h1> <p>ygay — Thu, 23 Dec 2021 16:44:56 +0000</p> <span>This Week in Photos: The Mug That Keeps Giving</span> <span><span>ygay</span></span> <span><time datetime="2021-12-23T11:44:56-05:00" title="Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 11:44">Thu, 12/23/2021 - 11:44</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>More than 600 bowls and mugs were sold at the Empty Mugs fundraiser earlier this month, thanks to �鶹��Ƶ’s Pottery Co-op and community volunteers who supplied the hand-sculpted pieces. </p> <p>Creating the mugs for the event involves many hours, but the end result is the gift that keeps giving. All proceeds are donated to the �鶹��Ƶ Community Services, which provides local residents with access to utilities, food, and housing. This year, sales from Empty Mugs raised more than $8,000 for the local organization.</p> <p>Helen Schrayer ’22 has been involved in the Pottery Co-op since her first year at �鶹��Ƶ. In fact, “it was a big part of why I decided to come to �鶹��Ƶ College,” she says. </p> <p>“This tradition is great because it increases co-op camaraderie and student engagement with �鶹��Ƶ Community Services,” says Schrayer. “It's hard to tell how many students donated pieces,” explains Schrayer. “But our top student potter made 150 mugs and bowls. Most active co-op members donated at least a few pots.”</p> <p>We continue our photo tour with stops along the Fall Art Walk; find a carpet seat at Bassoon Christmas; make a graceful Fall Forward; find pitch in Fairchild Chapel; perform community service at OCS; and end with a gift of service. </p> <hr> <div class="obj-center"> <figure class="captioned-image"> <figcaption>A student shops for the perfect mugs at this year’s Empty Mugs event. Baron ’64 Art Gallery. This group exhibit surveyed explorations from the first half of the senior capstone course. Vigo was a pioneer of the mail art movement, which involved sending small-scale artworks through the postal service. The exhibition features work Vigo created in the aftermath of Argentina’s Dirty War (Guerra Sucia in Spanish), a period from 1976 to 1983 in which the country’s military junta killed or “disappeared” anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 suspected left-wing political opponents.
