The collection ranges from important Japanese classics to modern Japanese literature.

Because of their genoristy, students and faculty will have access to this distinctive collection of Japanese books through the 鶹Ƶ College Libraries, says Professor of East Asian Studies Ann Sherif.

“The books reveal the research and reading essential to the influential career of Hiroaki Sato, poet and renowned translator of more than 25 volumes of Japanese poetry and prose fiction," Sherif says. "For more than half a century, Sato’s engaging translations have introduced English-speaking readers to the richness of Japan’s literary heritage, from Basho’s beloved haiku and poetic travel journals, Mishima Yukio’s controversial modern fiction and Noh plays, and the Chinese verse of Ema Saikō, one of the few known early 19th century woman poets, along with the classical canon of Japanese waka poetry.”

Assistant Professor of East Asian Religions Andrew Macomber says the Sato donation greatly expands the library's collection of offerings in modern Japanese literature, especially into the life and work of Yukio Mishima. "Of personal interest for my research on Japanese medical history, the gift also includes an important edition of the diary of Fujiwara Teika (1162–1241), an aristocrat who not only got sick frequently but also—thankfully for historians—loved to write about it. I'm excited students will be able to make use of these materials in their own research.”

Rossiter majored in art history and subsequently worked in the art world in a number of roles, including as a printmaker and a design assistant. After moving to New York, she completed a master’s degree at Hunter College. She paints regularly and is an art gallery enthusiast.

Sato was born in Taiwan to Japanese parents. He attended Doshisha University in Kyoto, receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English literature. He moved to the United States in 1968, and worked for the Japan External Trade Organization for 44 years. He is one of the leading translators of Japanese literature into English and the winner of many awards, including the PEN Translation Prize. He has has published more than 50 books, mainly translations of Japanese poetry and prose.

Rossiter and Sato have worked together on a number of books, most recently So Happy to See Cherry Blossoms: Haiku from the Year of the Great Earthquake and Tsunami (Red Moon Press, 2014). They currently live in New York City.

Campus News

Fri, 09/10/2021 - 12:00

Communications Staff

鶹Ƶ College Libraries

Alumni

Giving

East Asian Studies

East Asian Studies

A display case featuring covers from the Sato book donation.

Off

false

鶹Ƶ College Libraries

Fri, 10 Sep 2021 17:20:29 +0000 anagy 361061 at All in for 鶹Ƶ a Great Success /news/all-oberlin-great-success All in for 鶹Ƶ a Great Success hhempste Tue, 06/06/2017 - 15:48

The annual fund team would like to express its sincere gratitude to the entire 鶹Ƶ community for their support of All in for 鶹Ƶ on April 27, 2017. The day was a tremendous success, and $638,865 was raised from 2,950 donors in support of the people and programs here at the college. Gifts came in from every state in the U.S. as well as from 14 additional countries across the globe!

Faculty, staff, students, and former faculty/staff were particularly generous. There were nearly 500 gifts from our on-campus community that day totaling more than $21,000!

Highlights included numerous student performances in the ‘Sco, free Ben & Jerry’s in the afternoon, and hitting the donor goals to secure a generous $200,000 match from the incoming Board of Trustees Chair, Chris Canavan ’84.

Several hundred “thank you” postcards were written by students that day which have all been mailed to alumni donors who supported All in for 鶹Ƶ.

The 鶹Ƶ Annual Fund supports every aspect of campus life. The funds raised during All in for 鶹Ƶ support the college and conservatory’s most pressing needs, including scholarships and financial aid. According to Bill Barlow, vice president for development and alumni affairs, “It's important to recognize significant milestones during this campaign, and this is certainly one of those moments.” As of February 28, the campaign reached the $256 million mark.

The Illuminate Campaign was publicly launched in September of 2012 and has already raised 42 percent more in gifts and commitments than the previous 鶹Ƶ New Century Campaign (1997-2004). This success is also indicative of the steady improvement that has been made in recent years in the culture of philanthropy at 鶹Ƶ.

The campaign’s fundraising and engagement efforts aim to broaden access to an 鶹Ƶ education, strengthen the campus community, enrich the academic program, and better position students for success after they graduate. According to Barlow, “While we have made good progress toward reaching these goals, there is still a long way to go to meet our needs for several key institutional priorities including scholarship support, new health and wellness initiatives, and renovation of Hall Auditorium.”

Trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents as well as friends of the college, have all played important roles in reaching the $250 million milestone. “The generosity, hard work, and perseverance of many people has made this campaign successful, not only in terms of dollars but also in building the engagement activities and relationships that bind us together as part of the 鶹Ƶ family,” said President Marvin Krislov. “We still have work to do, particularly in ensuring that students of all backgrounds can attend 鶹Ƶ. The campaign will continue through June 2016, and I am excited to think about what we can accomplish together.”

Campus News

Wed, 03/04/2015 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Giving

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:20:09 +0000 Anonymous 15051 at Baby, It’s Cold Outside /news/baby-its-cold-outside Baby, It’s Cold Outside Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:20

Maybe it’s cold outside, but it’s warm and welcoming in Tank Co-op, where future prospie Cybil (center) hung out with current students while filming 鶹Ƶ’s 2013 holiday video, Baby, It’s Cold Outside.
