I also work on making the career advising process inclusive for all students. This year I’ve worked a lot on helping coordinate and run our major career education programs as well. </p> <p><strong>How many years at �鶹��Ƶ?</strong> One</p> <p><strong>What do you enjoy most about your work?</strong> That moment when a student lets me know they received the internship or job that they were hoping for. Seeing and hearing their excitement when they realize that all of their hard work networking, reviewing application materials, and practicing interviewing has paid off. </p> <p><strong>Are there key elements of career preparation students should undertake before graduation?</strong> I think all students should meet with a career advisor each year they are in college because it’s very important to start career preparation sooner rather than later. I’d also strongly encourage students to have a solid master resume that includes all of the professional and extracurricular experiences and a few drafts of cover letters. These two pieces of application materials are very important to any job search while at the same time being tricky genres of writing.</p> <p><strong>When you interact with students, what do you find they are most concerned about and what is your advice for them?</strong> I think most students have this idea that they need to know what they want to do with the rest of their life by the time they graduate, which is simply not true! Most likely you’ll do a number of different jobs in different industries throughout your life and that is okay. I try to ask students to think about what they want to do next as opposed to what they want to do with the rest of their life. I find that to be a much more helpful way of thinking about your professional journey. </p> <p><strong>Any programs or events coming up that you would like to tell us about?</strong> We’re really excited that our <a href="/career/set/junior-practicum-program">Junior Practicum program</a> will be kicking off at the end of February, and we’ve got some great workshops lined up for seniors to complete our <a href="/career/set/senior-launch" target="_blank">Senior Launch Series</a> as well! </p> <p><strong>Let’s talk about you. What’s your favorite childhood memory?</strong> Pretty much any time spent with my cousins. </p> <p><strong>Best vacation ever?</strong> Usually whichever one I took last! For me that was a trip to Panama in January 2020. It was the last trip I was able to take before the pandemic. I went for a wedding that didn’t actually happen, which is a whole other story, but ended up having a great time exploring, listening to music, eating delicious honey, ziplining, and swimming in the ocean. The January event featured panelists who shared the pivotal moments in their careers and the mentors who shaped their professional lives in the entertainment world. </p> <p>Kieran Mulroney, a screenwriter, director, and parent of an �鶹��Ƶ student in the Class of 2021, led the panelists through a series of questions organized around the metaphor of script narrative, including "What was the 'incitement point' when you realized you wanted to work in the industry?" and "What was your low-point or pivot point in your professional story?" Mulroney concluded the discussion by asking what advice the panelists would give their college selves. Their answers ranged from “be patient” to “recognize that hard work alone will not achieve success in Hollywood—networking is essential.”</p> <p>Obiewood seeks to raise �鶹��Ƶ College's profile as a source of high-quality candidates for placement in internships and full-time positions in Hollywood and throughout the entertainment industry. Schrader began her role in July 2019. </p> <p>Get to know more about Schrader in this Q&A.</p> <p><strong>Describe your role in six words.</strong></p> <p>Chaos stabilizer, plan deviser, career advisor.</p> <p><strong>What’s your favorite spot on campus?</strong></p> <p>I'm a homebody so, my favorite spot on campus is my office. My space is decorated with inspirational quotes, cats, and Lego figurines. In addition, you will find a collection of snacks hidden in the cabinets that is so large that you'll never have to worry about going hungry. Most importantly, I work with some of the most lovely people I have ever met—so I’d say that the neighbors are pretty cool, too. </p> <p><strong>What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?</strong></p> <p>"Call your mom." —my mom</p> <p><strong>What’s your most regrettable fashion choice?</strong></p> <p>I may or may not still own a pair of lime green Crocs that I bought in high school. </p> <p><strong>What’s the last book you read? </strong></p> <p><em>Furiously Happy </em>by Jenny Lawson. Five-stars, I would highly recommend.</p> <p><strong>What’s your favorite item of clothing?</strong></p> <p>I recently purchased a vintage, brightly floral printed, 70s-style frock that brings me joy. What do you see as your primary focus?</strong></p> <p>I want to stay focused on helping students explore careers and prepare for their professional life after �鶹��Ƶ. This means making useful and exciting resources and programs available to students. The key is to make sure that their first professional destination after �鶹��Ƶ is meaningful. I also want to support our talented staff and make sure that the Career Development Center is collaborating effectively with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory. It’s all about being in every �鶹��Ƶ student’s corner, helping them design meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling lives.</p> <p><strong>What are you most looking forward to in your position as executive director of the Career Development Center?</strong></p> <p>I most look forward to collaborating with my colleagues, alumni, and parents to set in motion the One �鶹��Ƶ vision for the Career Development Center. I am especially eager to work with our staff, who are often affectionately referred to by our colleagues as “the dream team.” </p> <p><strong>What were some of the past experiences or collaborations you've been a part of at �鶹��Ƶ?</strong></p> <p>At �鶹��Ƶ, I have been fortunate to work with students, faculty, and staff from across the institution, especially on the Peer Advising Leaders (PAL) program, Sophomore Opportunities & Academic Resources (SOAR), and Career Communities. This collaboration has been very rewarding, as our shared goal is integrating the educational work of the classroom with experiential learning in the co-curriculum. I want to continue and deepen this educational collaboration.</p> <p><strong>What's the most useful career advice you've ever been given?</strong></p> <p>Never settle, and plan, plan, plan!</p> <p><strong>What do you think students might not realize about the Career Development Center that you'd like them to know?</strong></p> <p>Planning for your future is also about the present. Contemplating your professional interests and talents and thinking about a sense of purpose in your career will help you launch successfully beyond �鶹��Ƶ. Doing this will also help you get more out of your coursework, your co-curricular activities, your winter terms, and your summer opportunities while you’re at �鶹��Ƶ. In honor of her retirement in December, the dance department has organized a weekend seminar on health and wellness on November 18 and 19. The program welcomes back to campus seven dance alumni, all of whom have studied with Vogel and have forged divergent careers based on health and wellbeing. Each will give a presentation on techniques and career advice.</p> <p>“I loved the idea of a health and wellness symposium because I have students who have gone on to do such great things,” Vogel says. “I’m always trying to integrate health and wellness education. My goal is to give them the tools, the skills, and the information necessary to make positive change in their bodies and in their lives. As a ‘whole’ person, you can’t have one aspect all by itself. You’ve got to look at your physical health, mental and emotional wellbeing, and your spiritual health.”</p> <p>For the majority of her career, Vogel has been teaching courses in body re-education and alignment (functional anatomy), physical wellness for musicians, dance conditioning, and introduction to somatic studies. She is a specialist in neuromuscular education—a focus she began as a young dancer just starting her career in New York City. She trained with Irene Dowd, a neuromuscular specialist who still practices in New York.</p> <p>“In the early part of my career when I was in New York, I worked in a large sports and dance medicine clinic. Some people would come in with an acute physical problem, but they had no idea that they had any control over the amount of muscular tension in their body. There is this disconnect, it’s like, ‘this is my body, but we’re enemies.’ And that’s where it gets fun because I get to play movement detective, and I always try to find a way into their perspective to give them a few other tools to create change or open up to a new belief about their body. Our bodies are plastic. The brain doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. There’s so much potential in creating health.”</p> <p>At �鶹��Ƶ, Vogel has worked to bridge that disconnect for musicians and athletes. “Frankly, I wish we could make this information available to all first-years,” she says, noting the deleterious effects of stress and anxiety.</p> <p>In her conservatory class this semester, Vogel marvels at the transformation some of her students are making. Dana Johnson, a fourth-year violin performance major, has been working on adjusting her pelvic tilt to improve her overall posture, as well as stretches that focus on her hip flexors, or iliopsoas.</p> <p>“Musicians do an immense amount of specific muscle movement each day, just like a tennis player or dancer, and I think that aspect of our craft—the athletic—is often neglected. It is so important, though, for our physical wellness to be in check to prevent injury and allow ourselves to play in the best way, most efficient way, for our bodies,” says Johnson, who is from Ann Arbor, Michigan.</p> <p>“We talk about the importance of hydration, do exercises to warm up and integrate both sides of the brain, and also explore the different states of mind we can occupy, and how we can use ‘state-changers’ to help optimize focus and learning capability. So much of this information I can use as a musician—whether it's a specific violin-related stretch, or preparing mentally for a practice session—but similarly, all of what we're learning is applicable to my life on a larger scale away from music. It's made me come to see how important it is to take care of my mind and body and what a huge difference that can make for my emotions, my learning, my focus, my art, and my overall well-being and functionality.”</p> <p>All events for the health and wellness symposium will take place in Warner Center, and the program is open to the campus and community. For each, dance and movement and the focus on health and wellness has always been there,” Vogel says. “I’m asking them to talk about their career, then reflect upon their education at �鶹��Ƶ, and share any words of wisdom or advice to current students. I’m really curious to hear what they have to say.”</p> <p>Vogel says she will continue to work on her craft after retirement. “I love teaching. It defines a large part of who I am, even in my parenting.
