Depending on availability, the students might make multiple stops for meals that are so vital to those families considered to be “food insecure”—or lacking reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food—in 鶹Ƶ and Lorain County.

These students are part of 鶹Ƶ Food Rescue, a service that transports donated food from various locations in the community and delivers it to 鶹Ƶ Community Services (OCS). OCS is a nonprofit organization that provides direct assistance to individuals in 鶹Ƶ, New Russia Township, and Southern Lorain County, and the food pantry is one of its most used resources.

鶹Ƶ Food Rescue is not a chartered student organization, but it is a group that is closely linked to the campus’ Resource Conservation Team (RCT). Three 鶹Ƶ Food Rescue members, including second-year Kelly McCarthy and fourth years Morgan Stein and Nora Cooper, also work for the RCT to fulfill its goal of reducing campus waste and creating sustainable systems.

Throughout the year, these students visit restaurants such as Pizza Hut, whose staff freeze meals for donation, and Stevenson Dining Hall. There, Stevenson chefs flash-freeze fully prepared meals that would have otherwise gone to waste and give it to 鶹Ƶ Food Rescue to deliver to 鶹Ƶ Community Services.

For 鶹Ƶ Community Services’ food program coordinator Hannah Rosenberg, receiving prepared food, such as the meals that come from Stevenson Dining Hall, is vital. “There is a really unfortunate hole in the pantry market. Our clients can leave with raw ingredients, such as produce and pasta, but many of our clients are homeless, don’t have adequate equipment to prepare the food, or need something quick so they don’t go hungry. There is a need for these prepared meals,” says Rosenberg. “鶹Ƶ Food Rescue has the ability to fill this hole.”

The college’s participation in the donation program began during the 2015-2016 academic year, when 鶹Ƶ Food Rescue member and fourth-year Jen Krakower spearheaded an initiative with her advisor to make use of surplus food in the dining hall.

Environmental studies major Kelly McCarthy became involved in 鶹Ƶ Food Rescue due to her personal interest in food systems. But there was another motivating element in her participation. “I think it’s really cool when the college can have a positive relationship with the community. 鶹Ƶ Community Services does really great work serving the community, and I thought it was a great way for the college to support their efforts.”

While the college partners with OCS by donating food through Food Rescue, it also collaborates with OCS on its end-of-year Dorm Food Rescue program.

This spring, OCS coordinated with the college to place cardboard collection boxes in every residence hall and co-op house. This allowed students who were moving out to easily donate any unwanted food to the food pantry before the conclusion of the academic year.

“The need here is great,” says Rosenberg. “Poverty in 鶹Ƶ is 21 percent, and 53 percent of those in the school district qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. The First Church in 鶹Ƶ was filled nearly to capacity as attendees listened to a festive concert performed by musicians from the 鶹Ƶ Conservatory’s brass, percussion, organ, and vocal studios. The evening’s sing-along portion not only included a spirited rendition of The Chimpmunk Song arranged by third-year Zoe Cutler, but also featured the young voices of the 鶹Ƶ Choristers’ Dulcis Musica and Jubilate Musica. Following the performance, nearly 500 colorful pieces of pottery, handmade by members of the 鶹Ƶ Pottery Co-op, were available for sale.

The annual event serves as a fundraiser for 鶹Ƶ Community Services, a charitable organization that helps feed families, heat homes, and provides help for those in need in 鶹Ƶ and its surrounding communities. The event was born in 2008, the brainchild of Michael Roest ’06, former teacher of brass studies and performance librarian and operations manager. But with the departure of Roest earlier this year, the fate of the concert was not so certain.

Enter a small group of 鶹Ƶ students.

“At the beginning of the semester, a few friends started asking me about the event,” said third-year Zoe Cutler. “When we found out Michael was leaving for a job in San Francisco we all thought – ‘well, what is going to happen to the event?’ People really look forward to it.”

That’s when Cutler, a trombonist and arranger studying classical and jazz trombone performance, along with 鶹Ƶ Pottery Co-op president and fourth-year Julie Cantwell, and two of their peers stepped in to lead the highly-anticipated, philanthropic event.

“We started planning at the beginning of semester, advertising and getting community sponsors,” said Cutler. “I made the event poster and program, and I also coordinated the musical portion of the evening.”

In producing the evening, Cutler stressed how involved the process was and how much effort goes into planning. “It’s been a journey for sure,” said Cutler. “It’s been amazing to realize how much Michael took on with performing, conducting, and even making pottery. This year we had to split the roles.” By sharing responsibilities, the students were able to produce a tremendously successful event.

That journey involved more than just planning the musical portion of the evening. It also required crafting hundreds of beautiful, handmade pottery pieces, the proceeds of which directly benefit 鶹Ƶ Community Services. That’s where 18 members of the Pottery Co-op came in, together making more than 450 bowls, cups, and other pieces to sell for the fundraiser. The process by which the pieces are made is extremely time consuming. Not only do members of the co-op make clay and glazes for the bowls, but they also gas fire the pieces in a kiln at the co-op.

鶹Ƶ resident Jack Flotte woke up early the Friday before the fundraiser to open the chilly co-op. “At 7 a.m. I turned on the furnace to heat the space. It has to heat slowly so it doesn’t shock the kiln,” said Flotte. Only after the room warms can he begin firing the pottery in the kiln. A seasoned ceramist and co-op member, Flotte has seen this process through many times. He carefully monitors the kiln, checking it every half hour. “It’s a millennia-old tradition that takes nearly 20 hours to complete,” explained Flotte.

The pottery made at the 鶹Ƶ Pottery Co-op is different than what one would find at a “paint your own pottery” studio. “The glazes that come from a gas firing are really pretty," explained Julie Cantwell, president of the Pottery Co-op. “At a paint your own pottery studio, pieces are fired in an electric kiln. You push a few buttons and you’re done. In our kiln, we’re reducing the oxygen that’s feeding the fire so that the fire eats all of the oxygen in the glazes,” said Cantwell. This process is what produces the striking, speckled look. “It’s a laborious process,” emphasized Cantwell.

The $9,000 raised this year from the sale of the pottery during Empty Bowls will directly support 鶹Ƶ Community Services’ emergency assistance and food pantry. “The impact of this event is significant. We continue to see the needs grow in our community,” said Executive Director Cindy Andrews. “Just this past weekend we served more than 150 families as a part of our second Saturday food distribution.”

With students planning the event between demanding course schedules, extracurriculars, work, and other commitments, coordinating Empty Bowls has been no easy task. But it is one close to the hearts of many. “It’s important to 鶹Ƶ Community Services and the Conservatory of Music,” emphasized Cutler. “It brings together the college and the town in a very positive way.”

With the hurdle of producing the event for the first time cleared, the future of Empty Bowls looks promising. “We’re going to continue the tradition,” said Cutler. “We’re hoping to establish a leadership group so the event exists for years to come.”

Campus News

Tue, 12/20/2016 - 12:00

Hillary Hempstead

Community Service

Holidays

Off

false

Empty Bowls 2016 Holiday Brass & Organ Spectacular

The first step in creating pottery is “throwing” the piece on a potter’s wheel. 鶹Ƶ Pottery Co-op members made more than 450 pieces to sell at the Empty Bowls fundraiser. More people in blue are seated behind tables along Professor Street busying themselves with papers. Soon they’ll be joined by a throng of students—primarily first-years—eager to venture beyond the college’s boundaries. But this isn’t a social excursion; it’s the annual Orientation community service event, Day of Service.

Sponsored by the Bonner Center of Service and Learning (BCSL), Day of Service is a daylong event (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) that introduces new and returning students to community service opportunities at local nonprofits. Last year’s event drew 439 volunteers who spent the day organizing supplies, harvesting crops, performing landscaping work, and more at 34 community partner sites.

“Day of Service has always been one of my favorite parts of the year,” says 2015 Day of Service coordinator Gabriel Moore ’15. A Bonner scholar alumnus who majored in musical studies and biology and minored in chemistry, Moore worked as a Day of Service site leader for four years. “Day of Service is about doing service but also learning from each other. Even if you’re doing a simple task like raking leaves, the conversations you’re having teach you about 鶹Ƶ and the student and community perspectives of 鶹Ƶ. There is a lot of bonding. Some people say they’ve met some of their closest friends through Day of Service.”

“I’m grateful we have this opportunity just prior to the start of each academic year to introduce incoming students to the local area through our excellent community partners and wonderful student and staff site leaders,” BCSL Director Beth Blissman says.

According to Blissman, Day of Service attracts more volunteers than any other single BCSL event, but it is just one of many opportunities students have to become involved with the community. To find these opportunities, Moore first suggests creating a profile on serve.oberlin.edu, a website launched in summer 2015 that introduces community partner agencies and lists their needs. He says a “huge wave of profiles” have been created by students since he began utilizing the site for Day of Service registration.

Secondly, if you participated in Day of Service, Moore suggests reaching out to your service site contact. “Keep in contact with your community partner. A lot of them are within walking distance, so you can go back to talk about opportunities,” he says. “Or you can connect using serve.oberlin.edu. Just go to the partner’s profile and send an e-mail saying you worked with them on Day of Service and ask if they need a volunteer.”

Moore’s third suggestion is to ask your peers about service opportunities. “Students know what service opportunities are in 鶹Ƶ, especially older students and those regularly involved like tutors or Bonner Scholars. Just having conversations about service, there are probably only two or three degrees of separation between the person you’re talking with and someone who does that kind of work.”

Lastly, he says, contact the BCSL staff. “Talk to staff members. Ask, ‘What should I do?’ Even if you have a skill you feel has no use in the 鶹Ƶ community, there probably is a use,” he says. “I was a biology and musical studies double major; conservatory and the sciences are some of the least service-oriented majors at 鶹Ƶ. But serving taught me that no matter what your field of study is, there is a need that can be met with it. There are so many ways to take your interests and put them into an action. BCSL staff members know who to connect you with so you can employ your skills.”

On why students should make time to serve the community, Moore says this: “Students come to 鶹Ƶ College, they learn all of these great things about power, privilege, and oppression, and they think they know how to fix the world. Well, 鶹Ƶ community members are always working to improve the microcosm that is the city of 鶹Ƶ. They’ve applied the methods students are learning in books and case studies.”

He continues, “Students really don’t have to enter town at all if they don’t want to. They don’t have to meet or make connections with people. But people in the community love to meet students and teach them what has and hasn’t worked.” And that, he says, is something that can’t be taught in the classroom.

To get in touch with BCSL staff, visit Daub House at 145 W.
