These culinarians see us and are holding a mirror up so Black chefs can see themselves in an honest and realistic way. She will be honored with obe ata stew.

Vegetable couscous will be served to honor Bryant Terry, a vegan chef and activist for a more sustainable food system as a right for all. “His ability to transform soul food staples into a delectable dish where you don’t miss the meat just shows the depth of his creativity and commitment to his craft,” says Smith.

Pumpkin fritters, in honor of Jessica B. Beavers, facing his guests, waits patiently as introductions are made before delving into the purpose of his visit.

Beavers doesn’t share much with his students at the University of Pennsylvania about the extraordinary winter term project he and his classmates performed in 1980. “In fact, I can’t remember the last time I told a student about what we did,” says the professor of English and Africana studies. “At the same time, I think about it at the oddest times. I’ll remember how the light looked or think about how ‘put upon’ I felt and how that was replaced by a sense of purpose.”

Herman Beavers '81 speaks to a large crowd of students, staff, and community members in Third World House.

As described in the spring 1980 issue of the 鶹Ƶ Alumni Magazine, written by members of the project, it took the nine-member team two years to perform research and inquiry with consultants before they were ready to don cotton clothing, head wraps, and large brimmed hats—attire similar to that worn by fugitives in 1850—and begin their walk at 12:30 p.m. on January 2, 1980. To maintain authenticity, the “escapees” followed back roads and travelled at night when necessary.

“The first day, we walked 17 miles and got our first taste of fatigue, ravenous appetites, sore feet, and irritability,” stated the OAM article. “As Herm Beavers lay fighting with George Barnwell ’81 and Lester Barclay ’81 for the one blanket they were sharing, he thought of the prospect of freezing to death, cursing the day he had gotten into the conversation with [his classmates] about recreating a slave escape.”

Audience members during the February presentation. Photo credit: Yvonne Gay

While five students made the journey on foot (joined later by two more), four more “escapees” forged ahead in a 25-foot camper in search of churches, barns, or other secure structures offering shelter and food, the article continued. Under the curious stares of passersby, the students moved slowly past motorists along Route 68, (their project began in Greensburg, Kentucky near the Tennessee border, toward 鶹Ƶ) often teetering along the edge of ditches. In one Kentucky town, they were chased from a barn by the bat-swinging brother of the property owner. After 33 days and 420 miles, the project was complete.

“I don’t know if I carried my weight,” reflects Beavers on the 40th anniversary of the journey. “I was dealing with a lot of things as the project loomed (including my parents not wanting me to go). [But a poem I read] made everyone realize that my presence added value to the project.”

It was this winter term journey and many other experiences at 鶹Ƶ that helped Beavers counter feelings of self-doubt, a lesson he openly shares today.

“I don’t know if one ever completely nullifies imposter syndrome,” he says. “I still have days when I ask myself what right I have to walk into a classroom or give a paper at a conference, when there are so many people who are smarter and more gifted. In Walter Mosley’s first novel, Devil in a Blue Dress, his protagonist Easy Rawlings has an inner voice he refers to as, ‘the Voice,’ and I have a little of that happening. The Voice says to me, ‘Are you going to let them keep treating you like you don’t matter or have something to say? You’re done being a scholar when you’re ready to be done; nobody else gets to decide.’ Whatever works, you know?”

But what brought Beavers to tears in Third World House was recalling a moment when then professor Jere Bruner indicated that a paper he had turned in was not up to par. “When I read his comments, I went from being mortified to feeling affirmed,” says Beavers.

“I have never forgotten that act of incredible empathy and kindness and when I became a professor, I was determined to follow Jere’s example. I’ve written that comment, ‘the paper, not you,’ many times during the course of my career,’’ he says. ‘‘I can be a very hard grader, but I try to convey to students that I push them hard because I believe excellence is within their grasp and that I value them in the same way that Jere Bruner valued me.”

<div class="field field--name-field-news-type The film launched 鶹Ƶ’s first Kuumba Week Film Festival. Kuumba Week is an annual celebration of black creativity.

InThe Last Black Man in San Francisco, Jimmie Fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Monty, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind.

Personally, “I was always interested in old housing,” said Glover in reference to the large mansion that plays a key role in the film. Having spent much of his life in San Francisco, Glover had been exposed to many ornate historic homes. The city also played a large part in his development as an actor and activist.

While in San Francisco, Glover trained at the Black Actors' Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater and attended San Francisco State University. Although he was exposed to activism through his parent’s involvement with the NAACP, he was impressed with “young people who were in the movement as organizers” in the late 1960s. His involvement with the Black Students Union would lead to the establishment of an ethnic studies department at San Francisco State University. In the 1970s, “I thought there was something I could say as an actor,” said Glover. But activism was never far behind.

“I have always seen art as activism.”

The Kuumba Week Film Festival continues through November 22, with screenings of Amazing Grace, KiKi, Agents of Change, and Do the Right Thing.

View more images from Johnny Coleman’s interview with Danny Glover on <a Railroad stop, a welcoming place for Japanese American students during World War II internments, and a refuge for Kent State University students after the May 4, 1970 National Guard shootings, the practice of providing sanctuary has been a central value of the college and town.

鶹Ƶ College has been awarded $10,000 from the Council of Independent Colleges Humanities Research for the Public Good program to both expand and extend 鶹Ƶ’s existing work around the concept of sanctuary. To that end, the college and city’s commitment to providing shelter for and affirming the humanity of individuals at key points of U.S. history will be highlighted through undergraduate research, the creation of a traveling exhibit, and online educational resources.

The impetus for this project was “inspired by a strong movement on campus to further assert 鶹Ƶ College’s position as a sanctuary,” says Alexia Hudson-Ward, Azariah Smith Root Director of Libraries. “After a series of conversations with former Dean Tim Elgren and College Archivist Ken Grossi, the Libraries and Archives were charged with creating a sustaining educational program that would explore our institution’s role as sanctuary from our early beginnings through the modern era. Hence, the 鶹Ƶ Sanctuary Project was born.”

A variety of individuals will help bring this project to fruition, including Associate Professor of Africana Studies and Comparative American Studies Meredith Gadsby and Professor of Comparative American Studies Gina Pérez, who will serve as researchers and faculty mentors to a student researcher. Grossi will be the collections expert and Hudson-Ward will be the project administrator.

Gadsby says that it’s vital to undertake this research because it provides the opportunity to illuminate how alive this particular history is.

“At 鶹Ƶ, we celebrate the history of the city and the college as a space that offered safe haven to African Americans escaping enslavement. In the present, there are students and faculty here who are first-generation and have diverse immigration experiences and stories.

‘‘The college was also the leader in admitting students ‘without respect to race.’ 鶹Ƶ has been superbly situated to actively participate in almost 300 years of sanctuary practices. Today, this issue touches Africans, Caribbeans, Latin Americans from Central and South America, and many others. It is important that we remember our history and act decisively in the present and future,’’ she says.

Pérez hopes that the resulting research and exhibit will inspire others to investigate their community’s efforts related to activism so that they can work to change unjust practices. She also hopes it will serve as a reminder of the history of sanctuary movements.

“Current sanctuary movements and struggles have long histories that affect a range of communities, including enslaved African Americans in the 19th century, interned Japanese and Japanese Americans during WWII, and even those protesting U.S. military power, including antiwar activists during the Vietnam War.”

The 鶹Ƶ Heritage Center will serve as the community partner for the project, providing support through research and interpretation of both 鶹Ƶ’s abolitionist history and the community’s acceptance of Japanese Americans during World War II.

鶹Ƶ Heritage Center Executive Director Liz Shultz says she hopes that those who engage with the resulting exhibit and programming can obtain some insight into how sanctuaries originate.

“I hope they gain a better understanding of how sanctuaries were created,” says Shultz.
“It’s often not through one big easy decision but through individuals making recurring, small, difficult, and personal decisions.”

Hudson-Ward believes that the project has the power to galvanize individuals into a different way of thinking. “I hope that people will be inspired by the concept of supporting community members in times of need, and they will see how this concept influenced the history of our nation.”

Campus News

Tue, 05/28/2019 - 12:00

Hillary Hempstead

A $10,000 grant awarded from the Council of Independent Colleges Humanities Research for the Public Good program will fund exploration of 鶹Ƶ College and the city of 鶹Ƶ’s shared 185-year commitment to providing a safe place for humanity to live, learn, and work.

Grants

Archives &
