The last time the event was held was in 2019, just before the pandemic, which made this year鈥檚 crawl a new experience for both first- and second-year students.&nbsp;</p> <p>鈥淢any students new to 麻豆视频 or new to research are unfamiliar with the range of research happening on campus. Some may not feel that they belong in research. Lab Crawl directly addresses these concerns through a fun and low-stakes event,鈥 explains Director of CLEAR Sabriya Rosemond. 鈥淟earning about labs they may not have considered before can also open up new possibilities for students as they make decisions about their academic career.鈥&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Similar to previous years, students were given the opportunity to visit and learn from peer Lab Crawl volunteers in several research fields, including anthropology, physics, astronomy, neuroscience, biochemistry and chemistry, and geology.&nbsp;</p> <p>Peer-to-peer learning plays a vital role in the crawl鈥檚 success. Around 95 volunteers assisted with set-up and welcomed students into labs this year.</p> <p>According to HHMI STEM Fellow Marcus Hill 鈥19, the peer-to-peer interactions during Lab Crawl echo the passion, enthusiasm, and excitement students have when they are learning in those spaces.&nbsp;</p> <p>鈥淩esearch is more than just analyzing data and presenting at conferences, it鈥檚 about the relationships you build with the faculty and fellow research students,鈥 Hill says. 鈥淟ab Crawl provides an opportunity for [students] who haven鈥檛 had the experience to hear directly from those who play key roles in labs. [It鈥檚 a learning experience] that you can鈥檛 get from reading a poster or watching a video.鈥&nbsp;</p> <p>A Lab Crawl tradition is the 鈥減articipation passports鈥 students are given and the stickers they receive to fill them. Stickers are provided at each lab they visit, and&nbsp; passports can be exchanged for pizza and a chance to win a T-shirt.&nbsp;</p> <p>This year, by the end of the two-hour event, 85 students had turned in their participation passports, with many more making quick stops at lab demonstrations and tables as their time allotted, says CLEAR Administrative Assistant Pat Sturges. Some labs reported having more than 50 visitors.</p> <p>By all accounts, [Lab Crawl] was a success, says Rosemond, whose staff have heard from several faculty members that students had already expressed interest in working in their labs.&nbsp;</p> <p>鈥淚n my own visit to some labs, I noticed that the conversations were not just limited to the research, but how students can participate in research, their experiences in a given department, or even suggestions of fun or exciting courses and opportunities,鈥 says Rosemond. 鈥淭hese interactions are mutually beneficial. While attendees get to learn about the research, the student volunteers have the opportunity to practice communicating about their work to a broad audience which is an important skill for all researchers.鈥&nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field It has been edited for style and clarity.</em></p> <p>鈥淚 started researching with Geology Assistant Professor Amanda Schmidt the summer after my sophomore year. This will be my third school year working with her, and I have also worked in her lab for three summers and two winter terms. </p> <p>In our lab, we use fallout radionuclides and other methods to learn about erosion on rivers in China's Yunnan province. Fallout radionuclides are radioactive isotopes that are in the sky, get stuck to dust, and come down to earth's surface primarily when it rains. Some fallout radionuclides are human made and some occur naturally. They exist in very trace amounts in soils and sediments around the globe. </p> <p>We measure most of their concentrations with a gamma spectrometer in our lab. Based on their concentrations in river sediment, we can get an idea of how deep in a soil profile the sediment is being sourced from. However, there is a problem with this method: Fallout isotopes aren't evenly retained by everything they fall on. To some extent, the mineralogy and grain size of the soil and sediment, among other factors, determine how much of an isotope gets stuck.</p> <p>My research looks at this problem in two ways, one of which is the pollinator garden experiment. The teflon containers in the garden are draining beakers with filters on the bottom that have five different grain sizes of quartz, five different grain sizes of river sediment, and five sheet silicate minerals. We bring them inside periodically to determine how much of each isotope gets retained in each sample.</p> <p>Secondly, I am measuring concentrations of fallout radionuclides in river sediment that we collected in Yunnan province during winter term 2014. I am also using other methods to determine the composition of the sediment, such as microscopy and X-ray diffraction. </p> <p>In addition to traveling to China to do field work with Schmidt, I also accompanied her to Glasgow, Scotland, during fall break of my junior year. There, we visited the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, where our collaborator measured the concentration of Beryllium-10 (10Be) in our river sediments. 10Be is an isotope that has to be measured in an accelerator mass spectrometer鈥攁n instrument that is roughly the size of a warehouse. The spectrometer is incredibly precise, and it is used to literally count atoms of 10Be.鈥</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2015-08-31T12:00:00Z">Mon, 08/31/2015 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2367">Science &amp; Math</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2358">Undergraduate Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2546">Photo Feature</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25366">Geosciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/amanda-schmidt" hreflang="und">Amanda Schmidt</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/geosciences" hreflang="und">Geosciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Tanya Rosen-Jones 鈥97</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/adrian-singleton-science-research_0.jpg?itok=8RoMpiCb" width="760" height="507" alt="NULL"> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:19:57 +0000 Anonymous 14601 at Underground Clues to Climate Change /news/underground-clues-climate-change <span>Underground Clues to Climate Change</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:20:52-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:20">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:20</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>What are the causes of abrupt climate change? What is behind the rapid melting of ice sheets at the end of glacial cycles? What role do humans play in climate change?</p> <p>Isotope geochemist R. Lawrence Edwards looks underground to answer such questions, championing cave deposits as recorders of historic and prehistoric climate. He'll discuss his research and results when he delivers a series of lectures, <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/search/events?search=Deciphering+Climate+Change&amp;utf8=%E2%9C%93">Deciphering Climate Change</a>, on campus November 14, 15, and 21.</p> <p>The Robert D. and Carol C. Gunn Professor and Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the University of Minnesota鈥檚 earth sciences department, Edwards and his large group of international collaborators are currently working on piecing together hundreds of thousands of years of Asian monsoon history from caves in China. Using innovative strategies, he relates his cave climate histories to those from ocean sediments and from ice cores, thereby establishing patterns of changing climate in time and space. Some of his research assesses the relationship between climate change and cultural history, drawing</p> <figure><img alt="Inside of cave " height="954" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/image/poster_stalagmites.jpg" width="650"> <figcaption class="credit">Courtesy of the National Academy of Sciences</figcaption> </figure> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>plausible links between global shifts in rainfall patterns and major cultural changes. His cave records, which cover the last several centuries, contain some of the strongest evidence yet for human-induced climate change.</p> <p>鈥淢odern data show quite clearly that the climate is changing, and there is broad scientific consensus that human activities are responsible for much of the change that is happening right now,鈥 says F. Zeb Page, associate professor of geology at 麻豆视频.</p> <p>鈥淲e know that over geologic time the Earth's climate has changed quite a bit without human help. To understand our part in the current climate-change predicament, we must establish a baseline of natural change. Professor Edwards鈥 work allows us to precisely determine the age of thinly layered limestone found in cave deposits back 700,000 years. These rocks serve as a detailed record of climate and can be tied to other climate-change drivers such as changes in the Earth's orbit.鈥</p> <p>Edwards will present his lectures at 麻豆视频 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences鈥 (NAS) <a href="http://www.nasonline.org/programs/awards/arthur-l-day-prize.html" target="_blank">Arthur L. Day Prize Lecture Series</a>. The NAS awards the Day Prize every three years to 鈥渁 scientist making lasting contributions to the study of the physics of the Earth and whose lectures will provide solid, timely, and useful additions to the knowledge and literature in the field.鈥</p> <p>Edwards鈥 says he chose 麻豆视频鈥攔ather than a large research university鈥攁s the site for his lectures because he 鈥渢hought the topic of climate history would be of interest to undergraduates and appropriate for presentation at the undergraduate level.</p> <p>鈥淭here are several strong geology departments at small liberal arts colleges, including 麻豆视频鈥檚 department, and 麻豆视频 was among the schools I considered on the basis of the strength of its program,鈥 he says. Edwards also notes his family ties to 麻豆视频: his mother was dean of students for the Chengdu campus of the 麻豆视频-in-China program at the time of the Communist takeover in 1949 and early 1950, and he has a child currently enrolled at 麻豆视频.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2013-11-13T12:00:00Z">Wed, 11/13/2013 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Cynthia Nickoloff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2366">Guest Artists &amp; Speakers</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25366">Geosciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/geosciences" hreflang="und">Geosciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">University of Minnesota</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/r_lawrence_edwards_0.jpg?itok=7jgQWRiH" width="225" height="300" alt="Isotope geochemist R.
