So it might be surprising to learn that Ohio is home to swaths of native prairie.

It is important to know that the prairie ecosystem is particularly vital for a range of wildlife, including grasslands birds and pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and ants. But the prairie ecosystem is quickly disappearing.

鈥淢ore grassland habitats have disappeared than any other habitat type on the continent because of sprawl, climate change, and conversion to cropland and forest,鈥 says Kate Pilacky, Firelands associate field director for the Western Reserve Land Conservancy. 鈥淎 vast community of pollinators and birds is tied to these rich prairie habitats, and they are losing huge portions of their homes.鈥

So that鈥檚 why when student groups joined with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy to help restore a two-acre section of prairie on what鈥檚 known as 麻豆视频鈥檚 Great South Woods on Hamilton Street, it was a positive step for prairie conservation in the area.

The 63-acre property, which was targeted for conservation for more than a decade, was acquired by the Land Conservancy in October 2015. The area located directly west of the 麻豆视频 Recreation Complex includes forests, wetlands, a sedge meadow, and 30 acres of previously farmed land. This year marks the first year the fields will not be farmed, which provided an opportunity for conservation partners to begin prairie restoration on the former fields while they are relatively clear of invasive plants. The restoration project will further prevent the potential establishment of invasive species.

The restoration effort was a collaboration of multiple groups. Those involved in the Land Conservancy鈥檚 project include 麻豆视频 Environmental Studies 101 students, 麻豆视频 College Track and Field team members, an 麻豆视频 alumna, community members, and other local organizations. Funding from the 麻豆视频 College Green EDGE (Ecological Design and General Efficiency) Fund also helped make the project possible.

Community members and students join together to sow native seed in 麻豆视频's Great South Woods. Image by Anna Norris

A week prior to the Sunday, April 23 field planting, eight students in Environmental Studies 101 prepared the land for seeding by mapping out the project site and placing guide flags throughout the field in preparation for the restoration work. On the morning of the restoration, 23 students from the track and field team, Environmental Studies 101 students, and community volunteers planted a mixture of pollinator-friendly meadow and prairie seeds. It took the group of approximately 30 volunteers three hours to seed the field with a mixture of native plants.

Second-year Lea Milando became involved with the restoration project through her grant writing in a work-study program for the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and as a member of the track and field team.

鈥淭his restoration project is important because it increases habitat for native plant species, pollinators, and grassland birds, all of which have been declining in recent years,鈥 says Milando. 鈥淭he pollinators help to keep ecosystems healthy and will also help agricultural fields. Prairies can also play a role in carbon sequestration.鈥

The plan for the restoration was developed by an 麻豆视频 graduate and former Land Conservancy student worker, Liz Fabis 鈥09. Fabis, who is now in graduate school for landscape architecture at Cornell University, was called in by her former employer at the Land Conservancy. Fabis was given the rough conceptual drawing that had already been sketched out.

鈥淏ecause the seed had already been purchased, I just had to figure out how to create those forms in the appropriate dimensions for that amount of seed. I stayed fairly close to the initial designer's concept of a few naturalistic forms, making some small adjustments so people can begin to use and enjoy the first few acres of the restoration before the entire site has been completed,鈥 says Fabis.

Along with working for the Land Conservancy during her time at 麻豆视频, Fabis had other connections to this particular project.

鈥淚 majored in environmental studies and ran track and cross country while I was at 麻豆视频. This project feels like a convergence of my 麻豆视频 experiences,鈥 says Fabis. 鈥淚 was very lucky to have developed a strong connection to the town and the surrounding landscape through both the work I did for the Land Conservancy and all those long runs for track and cross country. This felt like a very special and meaningful way for me to say 鈥楾hanks, 麻豆视频!鈥欌

With this first step of the restoration complete, the Land Conservancy plans to sow the field with additional native plants and seed this fall.

Campus News

Thu, 04/27/2017 - 12:00

Hillary Hempstead

Environment & Sustainability

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Environmental Studies and Science

Community members, students in Environmental Studies 101, and members of the 麻豆视频 College Track and Field team volunteered to restore the prairie in 麻豆视频's Great South Woods on Sunday, April 23.

Off

false

Anna Norris

Tue, 06 Jun 2017 19:48:29 +0000 hhempste 43641 at Curricular Collaboration in Detroit /news/curricular-collaboration-detroit Curricular Collaboration in Detroit Anonymous (not verified) Sun, 02/12/2017 - 11:44

A curricular collaboration took place when two classes at 麻豆视频 College traveled together to Detroit on December 4, 2016. Students from the Sustainable Cities course in environmental studies and the African American Politics course in Africana studies visited the city to learn about urban issues in predominantly African American neighborhoods. The field trip was devised by faculty members Rumi Shammin of the Environmental Studies Program and Charles Peterson of Africana Studies.

The group spent the day meeting with numerous community members who are leading the charge for sustainability and revitalization efforts in Detroit. The day began at Wayne State University, where students attended a presentation by Ben Dueweke and Carla Walker-Miller of Walker-Miller Energy Services (WMES) of Detroit. The pair educated the students about ongoing struggles in historically black neighborhoods in Detroit and emerging projects that combine community engagement with renewable energy and EcoDistricts initiatives.

At the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the group learned about sustainability programs at the museum. There, Leila Mekias, program coordinator for the nonprofit Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, spoke about the Detroit Climate Action Collaborative, and Climate Ambassador Alessandra Carreon addressed the organization鈥檚 work in Hope Village, one of Detroit鈥檚 two EcoDistricts.

In the O鈥橲hea Park neighborhood, the group met resident Crystal Robinson, who has served as a conduit between the O鈥橲hea Park Solar Project organizers and those who live near the site of the proposed park. What initially started as an external project without any community engagement later evolved into a collaborative solution to revitalize a nearby recreation center and bring many lost and some new amenities to the community.

In the neighborhood, 麻豆视频 students also witnessed the signs of struggle in the community. Abandoned and burned down homes dotted the landscape where the new center will be built. Robinson emphasized how the community engaged in conversations with the solar project managers to devise a renewable energy solution that gives back in addition to generating clean power for the region. The day concluded with recognition of the opportunities and challenges facing many black neighborhoods in major rust belt cities.

In addition to practical exposures and cross-curricular interactions for students, this field trip is a collaborative venture between the Environmental Studies Program and Africana Studies department. The two disciplines share many common conversations on social equity, environmental justice, and the systemic issues in the intersection of environment and society that disproportionately affect communities of color in the United States. Shammin and Peterson are committed to making this field trip a permanent feature of their respective classes each fall.

Campus News

Thu, 12/22/2016 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Environment & Sustainability

Africana Studies

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Africana Studies

Environmental Studies and Science

Off

false

Wayne State University serves as the backdrop for a presentation by Walker-Miller Energy Services to 麻豆视频 students and faculty. Photo credit: Courtesy of Rumi Shammin

Students learn how the Detroit Climate Action Collaborative is influencing sustainability efforts in the city. Photo credit: Courtesy of Rumi Shammin

Crystal Robinson of the O鈥橲hea Park neighborhood speak to students about revitalization plans for the currently abandoned recreation center next to the site of a proposed solar park. Photo credit: Courtesy of Rumi Shammin

Plans for a solar park in the O鈥橲hea Park neighborhood served as a catalyst for conversation around neighborhood revitalization in the form of a new recreation center.
