The collection ranges from important Japanese classics to modern Japanese literature.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Because of their genoristy, students and faculty will have access to this distinctive collection of Japanese books through the 鶹Ƶ College Libraries, says&nbsp;Professor of East Asian Studies Ann Sherif.</p> <p>“The books reveal the research and reading essential to the influential career of Hiroaki Sato, poet and renowned translator of more than 25 volumes of Japanese poetry and prose fiction," Sherif says.&nbsp;"For more than half a century, Sato’s engaging translations have introduced English-speaking readers to the richness of Japan’s literary heritage, from Basho’s beloved haiku and poetic travel journals, Mishima Yukio’s controversial modern fiction and Noh plays, and the Chinese verse of Ema Saikō, one of the few known early 19th century woman poets, along with the classical canon of Japanese waka poetry.”</p> <p>Assistant Professor of East Asian Religions Andrew Macomber says the&nbsp;Sato donation greatly expands the library's collection of offerings in modern Japanese literature, especially into the life and work of Yukio Mishima.&nbsp;"Of personal interest for my research on Japanese medical history, the gift also includes an important edition of the diary of Fujiwara Teika&nbsp;(1162–1241), an aristocrat who not only got sick frequently but also—thankfully for historians—loved to write about it. I'm excited students will be able to make use of these materials in their own research.”</p> <p>Rossiter majored in art history&nbsp;and subsequently worked in the art world in a number of roles, including as a printmaker and a design assistant.&nbsp; After moving to New York, she completed a master’s degree at Hunter College. She paints regularly and&nbsp;is an art gallery enthusiast.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Sato was born in Taiwan to Japanese parents.&nbsp; He attended Doshisha University&nbsp;in Kyoto, receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English literature.&nbsp; He moved to the United States in 1968, and worked for the Japan External Trade Organization for 44 years.&nbsp; He is one of the leading translators of Japanese literature into English and the winner of many awards, including the PEN Translation Prize. He has has published more than 50 books, mainly translations of Japanese poetry and prose.</p> <p>Rossiter and Sato&nbsp;have worked together on a number of books, most recently <em>So Happy to See Cherry Blossoms: Haiku from the Year of the Great Earthquake and Tsunami</em> (Red Moon Press, 2014).&nbsp;They currently live in New York City.&nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2021-09-10T12:00:00Z">Fri, 09/10/2021 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3449">鶹Ƶ College Libraries</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2368">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2419">Giving</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25336">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/east-asian-studies" hreflang="und">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">A display case featuring covers from the Sato book donation.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">鶹Ƶ College Libraries</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/sato_display_news.jpg?itok=6sA6QU34" width="570" height="760" alt="A library display case of the Sato book donation."> </div> Fri, 10 Sep 2021 17:20:29 +0000 anagy 361061 at Who is Sachiko Kondo? /news/who-sachiko-kondo <span>Who is Sachiko Kondo?</span> <span><span>ygay</span></span> <span><time datetime="2021-03-01T11:38:22-05:00" title="Monday, March 1, 2021 - 11:38">Mon, 03/01/2021 - 11:38</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Name:&nbsp;</strong><a href="/sachiko-kondo" target="_blank">Sachiko Kondo</a></p> <p><strong>Department and location on campus:</strong>&nbsp;East Asian Studies in Peters Hall.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Job title:</strong>&nbsp;Lecturer in Japanese&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What does your job entail?</strong>&nbsp;Teaching and learning Japanese language and culture.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>How many years at 鶹Ƶ?</strong>&nbsp;Eight and a half years.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What are your hobbies?</strong>&nbsp;Playing ukulele, taking naps, and going on hikes.</p> <p><strong>Nickname(s)?</strong>&nbsp;Konsachi&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Favorite food?</strong>&nbsp;Strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Favorite Quote?</strong>&nbsp;“Winter always turns to spring.” (冬は必ず春となる in Japanese)</p> <p><br> &nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2021-03-01T12:00:00Z">Mon, 03/01/2021 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Yvonne Gay</div> <div class="text-content field field--name-field-intro-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Sachiko Kondo’s teaching interests include language pedagogy, content-based instruction, and second language acquisition. Sasamori’s talk will be told alongside Professor of Japanese at Purdue University Kazumi Hatasa and will take place at 3:30 p.m. in King 106.</p> <p><a href="/node/5456" target="_blank">Sachiko Kondo</a>, lecturer in Japanese and Japanese language instructor at 鶹Ƶ, organized Sasamori’s visit and notes its significance in relation to similar on-campus events in recent years. Truman, attended an event in 鶹Ƶ marking the <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/sadako_in_the_spirit_of_peace" target="_blank">70th anniversary</a> of the Hiroshima bombing, and in 2017, trees were donated to the college in honor of atomic bomb survivors.</p> <p>“Sasamori’s visit will inspire many people, especially young people, to renew their determination and commitment to contribute to building a peaceful society,” Kondo says.</p> <p>After surviving the Hiroshima bombing at age 13, Sasamori was treated at a medical facility in the United States and later moved to the country, attended nursing school, and commenced her speaking career as a peace activist at the age of 48. Since then, Sasamori has spoken about her experiences as a Hiroshima survivor at universities across the country and was named Special Communicator for a World without Nuclear Weapons by the Japanese government in 2013.</p> <p>Students in Professor of Japanese <a href="/node/5481" target="_blank">Ann Sherif</a>’s course, Living with the Bomb, have been studying the stories of atomic bomb survivors and will meet with Sasamori during her visit. Smith, senior fellow for Japan studies with the Council of Foreign Relations, and Jeffrey Wasserstrom, professor of history at University of California Irvine, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7.</p> <p>The campus community will have an opportunity to hear more about Stephens’ career as a diplomat as well as her expertise on the relations between the United States and Northeast Asia in a separate guest event at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, in Nancy Schrome Dye Lecture Hall. The talk will be moderated by Professor of East Asian studies Sheila Miyoshi Jager and Visiting Assistant Professor of History Jiyul Kim.</p> <p>Stephens’ visit is timely because it is scheduled one week after President Trump’s second summit with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un that will take place February 27-28 in Vietnam. In the talk moderated by Jager and Kim, Stephens will discuss the outcome of the summit and its implications for the future of peace Northeast Asia.</p> <p>Kim says he is thrilled to bring Stephens to 鶹Ƶ because she is one of the foremost experts on the region, especially on the Koreas. Stephens has a long career in foreign service, beginning as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Korea in the 1970s. She has held positions at U.S. embassies and consulates in China, Trinidad and Tobago, Serbia, Croatia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and South Korea. She was ambassador to South Korea from 2009 to 2011.</p> <p>Following her ambassadorship, Stephens was a research fellow with Stanford University’s&nbsp;Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. She is now president and CEO of the Korea Economic Institute, a think tank in Washington, D.C., that focuses on U.S.-South Korean relations and the South Korean political economy. &nbsp;</p> <p>Kim says Stephens was highly regarded by the Korean people during her ambassadorship. “She spoke the language and embraced the people and the culture, insisting on using the Korean name she adopted while in the Peace Corps. To this day, she is more familiar to South Koreans by her Korean name, Shim Eun-gyeong. We could not have asked for a more qualified person to talk about the Koreas. Her life and career will be inspirational to 鶹Ƶ students.”</p> <p>The event is sponsored by the 鶹Ƶ College dean’s office, International Studies,&nbsp;the East Asian studies, history, and politics departments, and the 鶹Ƶ Korean Student Association.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-02-15T12:00:00Z">Fri, 02/15/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2390">Events</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2363">Academics &amp; Research</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25381">History</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25416">Politics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25336">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/jiyul-kim" hreflang="und">Jiyul Kim</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/sheila-miyoshi-jager" hreflang="und">Sheila Miyoshi Jager</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/history" hreflang="und">History</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/politics" hreflang="und">Politics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/east-asian-studies" hreflang="und">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Kathleen Stephens, former ambassador to South Korea</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Courtesy of 鶹Ƶ College</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/profile_photo-_ambassador_stephen.jpg?itok=yCSJrqki" width="760" height="505" alt="Image of Kathleen Stephens"> </div> Fri, 15 Feb 2019 19:36:31 +0000 anagy 153041 at Examining East Asian Book Technologies and Formats /news/examining-east-asian-book-technologies-and-formats <span>Examining East Asian Book Technologies and Formats</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2018-05-10T10:06:10-04:00" title="Thursday, May 10, 2018 - 10:06">Thu, 05/10/2018 - 10:06</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Designed by library staff members Ed Vermue and Runxiao Zhu, an exhibit about East Asian book technologies and formats was recently showcased in the main library. They had two very different visions of what modern Korea should become, and each believed they represented the true Korea,” says Jager.</p> <p>In the conversation, Jager also speaks about possible ways the Korean War could end, along with China's role in the conflict.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2017-04-11T12:00:00Z">Tue, 04/11/2017 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25336">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/sheila-miyoshi-jager" hreflang="und">Sheila Miyoshi Jager</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/east-asian-studies" hreflang="und">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> Mon, 01 May 2017 14:53:18 +0000 Anonymous 41531 at First-of-its-Kind Symposium on Asian Cinema /news/first-its-kind-symposium-asian-cinema <span>First-of-its-Kind Symposium on Asian Cinema</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:20:09-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:20">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:20</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Asian cinema experts, filmmakers, and enthusiasts will come together in 鶹Ƶ this weekend for a series of events that includes the symposium Asian Cinemas in a Global Context; the lecture “<a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/tom_gunning_why_cinema_has_not_yet_been_invented_or_taking_the_digital_in_hand#.VP39n2TF-9V">Why Cinema Has Not Yet Been Invented: or Taking the Digital in Hand</a>,” by University of Chicago Professor Tom Gunning; and the lecture “<a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/lecture_by_taiwanese_documentary_filmmaker_ho_chao-ti#.VQA9_2TF-9V">Globalization from a Local Lens: Creative Conceptions of a Taiwanese Director</a>,” by documentary filmmaker Ho Chao-ti. The symposium, a collaborative effort between the Department of English, the programs in East Asian studies and cinema studies, and 鶹Ƶ Shansi, is the first to explicitly bring together Indian and Chinese cinemas for discussion.</p> <p>Anuradha Needham, chair of the English department and Donald R. Longman professor of English, and Hsiu-Chuang Deppman, associate professor of Chinese and author of <em>Adapted for the Screen: The Cultural Politics of Modern Chinese Fiction and Film</em>, organized the symposium in conjunction with courses they are teaching this semester: <a href="https://catalog.oberlin.edu/preview_course.php?catoid=43&amp;coid=159017&amp;print">Bollywood’s India: An Introduction to Indian Cinema</a> and Popular Chinese Cinema and Public Intellectualism. Needham, who studies Indian cinema and recently published the book <em>New Indian Cinema in Post-Independence India: The Cultural Work of Shyam Benegal’s Films</em>, says it was students expressing interest in Bollywood cinema who inspired her to teach her course and, ultimately, co-organize the symposium.</p> <p>Needham says she and Deppman planned the symposium for this weekend because it coincides with Tom Gunning and Ho Chao-ti’s lectures. “It’s a series of happenings all on cinema. They are related to each other; they piggyback on each other,” she explains.</p> <p>Tom Gunning’s lecture on March 13 will be the ninth in the series 鶹Ƶ Lectures in English and American Literature. The series is made possible by an endowed fund created for that purpose by Andrew Bongiorno, a former English department chair and professor who died in 1998.</p> <p>Ho Chao-ti’s lecture will launch the Jacobson-Cocco Distinguished Lecture Series, endowed by 鶹Ƶ Shansi in honor of former Executive Director Carl Jacobson and Associate Director Deborah Cocco, who, according to 鶹Ƶ Shansi Campus Coordinator Sophie Grimes, worked for the nonprofit for 36 and 27 years, respectively. In addition to her lecture, two of Ho Chao-ti’s documentaries, <em><a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/film_screening_my_fancy_high_heels#.VQA-RGTF-9W">My Fancy High Heels</a></em> and <em><a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/film_screening_sock_n_roll#.VQA-W2TF-9W">Sock ‘n’ Roll</a></em>, will be shown.</p> <p>According to Needham and Deppman, the symposium and other related events epitomize many of 鶹Ƶ College’s core values. These include diversity, originality, and, most notably, collaboration, the latter of which is demonstrated by the cooperation of the various departments, programs, and organizations involved. Additionally, the symposium will welcome three Kenyon College faculty and their students who, along with three 鶹Ƶ English faculty, are part of a Great Lakes College Association (GLCA) supported collaborative grant.</p> <p>Needham cites the number of symposium registrants—now more than 100—as an indication of people’s interest in the topic of Asian cinema. “This is the first instance any symposium combines Indian and Chinese cinema,” she says. “We are excited that so many people are excited about it.”</p> <p>For more information about the symposium and a complete schedule of events, visit <a href="http://shansi.org/">shansi.org</a>.</p> <p>The symposium would not have been possible without funding and support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for the 鶹Ƶ Center for Languages and Cultures (OCLC); the President’s Office; the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences; the Department of Art History Baldwin Fund; South Asian Students Association (SASA); Leading Edge Fund; and the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC).</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2015-03-11T12:00:00Z">Wed, 03/11/2015 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Lisa Gulasy</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2366">Guest Artists &amp; Speakers</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2397">Shansi</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25346">English</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25256">Cinema and Media</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25336">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/english" hreflang="und">English</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/cinema-studies" hreflang="und">Cinema and Media</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/east-asian-studies" hreflang="und">East Asian Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">A series of events is taking place March 12-15, including the symposium Asian Cinemas in a Global Context; the lecture “Why Cinema Has Not Yet Been Invented: or Taking the Digital in Hand,” by University of Chicago Professor Tom Gunning; and the lecture “Globalization from a Local Lens: Creative Conceptions of a Taiwanese Director,” by documentary filmmaker Ho Chao-ti.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/asian-cinemas-symposium-poster-cropped_0.jpg?itok=Z1n7Z99H" width="315" height="338" alt="Asian Cinemas in a Global Context poster"> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:20:09 +0000 Anonymous 15031 at
