Find out why in this installment of Who Am I?

Department and location on campus: Theater located in the Nord Annex / Hall Auditorium / Hall Annex

Job title: Assistant Technical Director (which gets mistaken for computer work all the time).

What does your job entail? My job is to construct the sets used in all our performing spaces.

How many years at 鶹Ƶ? 18

Favorite place in 鶹Ƶ and why? My home, because it is where I relax the most.

Many theater sets at 鶹Ƶ are very detailed—from apartment buildings to the fronts of homes! What excites you about this process? Each show we present is different from the last. There is no repetition which makes it seem as if you're starting over from scratch each time.

What are your top three set builds at 鶹Ƶ? Eurydice (which I also appeared as an actor), Street Scene, and Reefer Madness.

What have been your most difficult designs? Street Scene was very challenging as we built each part of the building separately to allow the painters to do their work, and then once painted, we put it all together which was incredibly challenging. But in the end it all came together.

What has building for film (because of COVID-19) been like for you? Is it different from building for a live audience? This past year I assembled four recording "booths" for our radio play The Misanthrope. A green screen wall for our Zoom play Fires in the Mirror. And finally a set for Twilight Bowl which was filmed. Nothing was remarkably different than building a set for a live audience. One always wants as much detail on the set as possible, and if you had a chance to view Twilight Bowl maybe you saw all the set dressing.

What will you enjoy most about having a live audience in the theater again? Having a live audience is why I do theater. Getting that energy from the audience is unlike seeing a film. You know if they're with you or not. There is an excitement when the audience comes into the space, and more often than not can see the stage in a dimly lit glow. I find as an audience member I'm taking in the space and looking at the details. It brings me joy.

Hobbies? I am going to pick up my guitar again.

Nickname(s)? None that I know of. Sometimes my ears burn around certain people so they might have coined a phrase or two.

Favorite song? Too many, but most would be filled by the works of Bob Dylan (a personal hero).

Favorite food? My husband Matthew's cooking

Favorite movie? Harold and Maude

Favorite quote? “When you ain't got nothing, you've got nothing to lose,” by Bob Dylan.

Campus News

Thu, 06/17/2021 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Staff

Opera Theater

Theater

Dance

Theater

Dance

David Bugher, assistant technical director of theater.

Off

false

Bryan Rubin '18

Thu, 17 Jun 2021 16:35:50 +0000 ygay 346891 at Who is Julian Abramof ’12? /news/who-julian-abramof-12 Who is Julian Abramof ’12? ygay Thu, 03/25/2021 - 11:25

If you attended a theater, dance, or opera performance at 鶹Ƶ College, you may have interacted with Julian Abramof ’12, but did you know he is a gamer after hours? How have you adapted instruction to a remote learning environment? How have students shifted how they learn and participate? What’s changed, what’s stayed the same, or what has come as a pleasant surprise?

Please share an example or anecdote that addresses one of these areas.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance Holly Handman-Lopez shares how, even in the challenging circumstances of these times, students have been able to find ways to express themselves and stay connected to their creative community. Through a collective screen dance project, 17 dance majors and minors continue to pursue creative projects because, “Learning how to keep going even when the ground beneath your feet is shifting—this is what artists do,” says Handman-Lopez.

From Handman:

Moving with other dancers, rehearsing in preparation for concerts, and performing for audiences—these are the things dancers love to do. This semester, our students lost opportunities to experience the joys and challenges of creating and performing new choreographies. Senior majors who needed to complete their capstone projects have had to revise their plans numerous times as circumstances changed. Live performances with sizable casts scheduled for various campus venues have been reimagined into screen dances and other interdisciplinary projects. One senior dance major chose to work with two small groups of students who are quarantining together; one pod has three dancers, the other has two. In this instance, what had been a sextet scheduled for performance in Fairchild Chapel will become a screen dance featuring a trio and a duet.

In an effort to support our students and to give them a way to express themselves and stay connected to their creative community, I devised a collective screen dance project inspired by the Exquisite Corps by Mitchel Rose of Ohio State University. His project featured many superstars of contemporary dance. We are featuring superstars of 鶹Ƶ, 17 dance majors and minors who continue to pursue their creative projects, no matter how many times they are thwarted or redirected by our ever-changing circumstances. Learning how to keep going even when the ground beneath your feet is shifting—this is what artists do.

Despite time zone differences, intermittent Wi-Fi, and quarantine challenges, every single student who signed on to the project persevered and contributed a unique clip to the piece. My only request was that they begin where their classmate had ended and keep it within a short timeframe. Each student designed their segment and recruited a camera person or made it work on their own.
