He was 89.

A Rhodes Scholar, Sherman earned a DPhil from Oxford University in 1960 and began teaching at 鶹Ƶ six years later. He authored two books: A Place on the Glacial Till: Time, Land, and Nature Within an American Town, an affectionate chronicle of the natural history and life around his longtime home of 鶹Ƶ; and Energy, Entropy, and the Flow of Nature, an exploration of the principles of thermodynamics delivered in easy-to-follow language. Both books were published by Oxford University Press.

“Tom brought careful preparation and considerable thought to his lectures,” says Dennis Luck, an emeritus professor of biology and 24-year colleague of Sherman’s who bonded with the elder professor over their shared studies in Oxford’s doctoral program in biochemistry.

“He encouraged his students to forge cross-connections and to think independently. He stressed attention to accuracy and detail in written work. He will be remembered with affection by many 鶹Ƶ students and faculty as an accomplished, considerate, and gentle scholar.”

Sherman will be remembered in a private ceremony. The last time the event was held was in 2019, just before the pandemic, which made this year’s crawl a new experience for both first- and second-year students.

“Many students new to 鶹Ƶ or new to research are unfamiliar with the range of research happening on campus. Some may not feel that they belong in research. Lab Crawl directly addresses these concerns through a fun and low-stakes event,” explains Director of CLEAR Sabriya Rosemond. “Learning about labs they may not have considered before can also open up new possibilities for students as they make decisions about their academic career.”

Similar to previous years, students were given the opportunity to visit and learn from peer Lab Crawl volunteers in several research fields, including anthropology, physics, astronomy, neuroscience, biochemistry and chemistry, and geology.

Peer-to-peer learning plays a vital role in the crawl’s success. Around 95 volunteers assisted with set-up and welcomed students into labs this year.

According to HHMI STEM Fellow Marcus Hill ’19, the peer-to-peer interactions during Lab Crawl echo the passion, enthusiasm, and excitement students have when they are learning in those spaces.

“Research is more than just analyzing data and presenting at conferences, it’s about the relationships you build with the faculty and fellow research students,” Hill says. “Lab Crawl provides an opportunity for [students] who haven’t had the experience to hear directly from those who play key roles in labs. [It’s a learning experience] that you can’t get from reading a poster or watching a video.”

A Lab Crawl tradition is the “participation passports” students are given and the stickers they receive to fill them. Stickers are provided at each lab they visit, and passports can be exchanged for pizza and a chance to win a T-shirt.

This year, by the end of the two-hour event, 85 students had turned in their participation passports, with many more making quick stops at lab demonstrations and tables as their time allotted, says CLEAR Administrative Assistant Pat Sturges. Some labs reported having more than 50 visitors.

By all accounts, [Lab Crawl] was a success, says Rosemond, whose staff have heard from several faculty members that students had already expressed interest in working in their labs.

“In my own visit to some labs, I noticed that the conversations were not just limited to the research, but how students can participate in research, their experiences in a given department, or even suggestions of fun or exciting courses and opportunities,” says Rosemond. “These interactions are mutually beneficial. While attendees get to learn about the research, the student volunteers have the opportunity to practice communicating about their work to a broad audience which is an important skill for all researchers.”

Campus News
<div class="field She prefers that the pollinator garden grows uninhibited, so pruning is typically done only when necessary.

The garden, located on the first floor of the Science Center, is framed by a large bank of two-story windows. It’s designed to allow visitors to literally see conservation at work and gain an appreciation for the critical ecosystem services that flowering plants and their pollinators provide. The depth of the space can be difficult to gauge until the door opens and you are welcomed inside. Visitors are met with a narrow path that winds past several flower beds before opening up to bird houses and ferns. The garden is filled with some 50 species of plants and native hosts such as common milkweed, butterfly weed, and swamp weed. There are also nesting sites for native species of solitary bees and hives for European honey bees. Small water reservoirs are tucked under branches. The serenity and majesty of the space is not lost on Garvin.

“I was initially drawn to biology as a child,” Garvin says.’’ I had a rather obsessive attraction to the beauty of nature. I was very lucky to grow up in a rural area when kids were allowed to roam the woods and fields and creeks unsupervised. Growing up in a large family, I guess that I found great peace in that natural world. I just love to watch a garden progress through a season—watch inter-species interactions, especially plant and insect interactions and the seasonal changes in these interactions. So, I guess that I also really enjoy seeing students develop the same sense of joy and wonder and the resulting inspiration that they derive from it.”

To prepare her students for their learning journey, Garvin spent several weeks watering, pruning, and inspecting foliage inside the open air atrium during the summer months. Prior to the coronavirus, the pollinator garden was often used by several biology and geology professors. Garvin would also bring her class of 20 or more students into the space to work with the hive, while others performed semester-long projects. Although Garvin plans to primarily teach remotely this year—students will spend the first half of the semester collecting data for semester-long projects—the openness of the garden lends itself to social distancing practices so she intends to lead in person small group labs there and in other field settings on college property. Students will also create and curate an insect collection.

Students in Garvin’s classes wear protective gear and dismantle hives “to see live examples of the major concepts of behavior, physiology, genetics, ecology, and evolution.” During regular maintenance of the hives, students observe the structure of the comb, the proportion of cells in the comb with eggs, larvae, and signs of disease. Photo credit: Yvonne Gay

During the winter months, when most of the plants and the bees are dormant, the pollinator garden is still very interesting, explains Garvin. “Birds come in to feed on the seeds and fruit that result from successful flower pollination. The birds also feed on bees that died and have been removed from the hive by young worker bees. On a warm day in January or February, the ground outside of the hive might be littered with dead bees from such a cleaning. In class this year, the winter garden provides an opportunity to see these processes at work and to see the effects of climate change, such as the early emergence of plants in response to our warming winters.”

A ladybug clings to a cup plant with aphids. Photo credit: Yvonne Gay

For Garvin, the best teaching is actually coaching or mentoring students in how to approach problems, think critically, and learn in ways that are best for them. She does this by guiding her students through their own exploration of the scientific process—first by providing them with the opportunity to experience a sense of wonder, then by walking with them on that journey through the scientific process. The pollinator garden is a wonderful tool for this approach.

“Here’s an observation that a student might make,” Garvin says, walking briskly over to a large leaf plant with red specks. “All of these plants have these very interesting insects, but they're not on other plants. So, it would be the student’s job to figure out what these insects are and identify the plant. But why are the insects only on this plant and not other plants? The student can develop a hypothesis and together we can do the creative piece of designing and experimenting to see if we can figure that out.”

Garvin will teach Ecology of a Watershed; Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology; and Invertebrate Ecology and Evolution this academic year.

Campus News

Fri, 08/21/2020 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

This academic year, many students will learn in outdoor classrooms and some will have the opportunity to explore 鶹Ƶ’s pollinator garden—a living classroom inside the Science Center.

Science Center

Academics & Research

Biology

Biology

Professor of Biology Mary Garvin works in the Science Center’s pollinator garden.

Off

false

Yvonne Gay

Fri, 21 Aug 2020 21:00:29 +0000 ygay 305196 at This Week in Photos: Changes on Campus /news/week-photos-changes-campus This Week in Photos: Changes on Campus ygay Tue, 08/18/2020 - 16:08

This week we visit some of the changes on campus, join a summer campus tour, read motivational messages, and end with views of familiar places.

Tents around campus will be used for classes.
